Chapter 320 - 320 319 Dormancy (Extra)
Chapter 320: Chapter 319: Dormancy (Extra) Chapter 320: Chapter 319: Dormancy (Extra) “It’s truly wonderful,” Lady Meryl said as she lay in Baron Roman’s arms, emitting an inexplicable sigh of emotion.
Baron Roman put down the estate newspaper he was reading and asked, “What is it?”
“Russell is about to become a Flying Dragon Knight. You are a Flying Dragon Knight, and our son will be one too. It’s hard to imagine,” Lady Meryl said, shaking her head. The Fluorescent Fungi Family only had one bipedal flying dragon, so it was impossible for father and son to ride the same dragon.
Yet such an impossible scene had actually come true.
After a pause, she sighed again, “It’s just a pity that Roland doesn’t ride dragons. I can feel that Russell’s dragon riding has hit him hard. Moreover, Baron Gevedas’s rejection of the marriage alliance has disheartened him even more. He has been much quieter than before.”
“It could also be a sign of maturity,” Baron Roman optimistically remarked. “After all, how can a man grow if he doesn’t face a few setbacks?”
“Fortunately, the brothers don’t have to fight over the inheritance, or we would have a real headache.”
“That’s true. If Russell had been the one to ride Ross, that would have been problematic… I might have even passed the barony to Russell. After all, the significance of a Flying Dragon Knight to the family goes without saying… Luckily we don’t have that worry. Each brother has his own dragon, which is nice.”
“Would you really be willing to let Roland ride Mr. Ross?”
“Of course not,” Baron Roman declared, his tone full of rightful indignation.
But soon he sighed, “However, I will age in time, and even if I live another decade or more, I don’t plan to ride dragons anymore. If Roland can gain Ross’s acceptance, I’ll dissolve our contract earlier.”
“Do you really think so?”
“Of course, you think everyone is as keen on holding on to things as your father? I gave up my position as Finance Minister decisively for the pride of Ross,” Baron Roman boasted proudly. “How many in this world could be as carefree as I am?”
“Alright, alright, so my father took your position as Finance Minister, do you have to dwell on it every day? Besides, if it weren’t for that incident, Mr. Ross might still be troubled by his past… In a way, my father is your benefactor in dragon riding.”
“I don’t acknowledge that favor,” he retorted.
“Ah, I really look forward to seeing Russell riding his dragon one day,” Lady Meryl said wistfully. “A father, a husband, and a son who are all Flying Dragon Knights, in the same era too.”
At that moment, she felt she was the most glorious woman in the entire Shadowflame Grand Duchy, even more so than Princess Anxia.
Baron Roman yawned, “Let’s sleep, let’s sleep, it will happen soon enough.”
…
They spent a night at Fluorescent Castle.
The next day, Russell headed straight for the plains east of Sharp Knife Mountain, arriving at the already chosen location, a slightly elevated area in the middle of the flat snowfield.
According to his estimates, there should be a vast plain underneath the ice cap, and the spot he stood on was the only hill in that plain. He planned to place the warm spring on the hill and to build the castle there as well.
That way, he could enjoy the warm springs directly from the castle.
Unlike the Glowing Valley, where the warm springs were at the northernmost end and the castle in the middle, there was some distance between them.
To take a warm bath, he would have to go to Uncle Rosen’s manor.
“Polly, what do you think about this place?” Russell asked in his mind.
Unicorn Polly spoke gently, “This is fine, Russell.” It saw no difference in the vast snowfield wherever they were.
Looking up at Harpy Dragon Hape circling above his head, Russell asked, “What do you think of this place, Hape?”
Hape responded with a sound, “Gua’er.”
Its meaning was unclear, but Russell took it as a sign of satisfaction and took out the shimmering red Black Oil Dragon Egg from his pocket.
He laid it flat in his palm.
“Father…” Rossay called out to Russell with a milky voice.
“We will settle down here, Rossay, what do you think?” Russell asked softly.
“I’m not sure, but I like whatever Father chooses,” Rossay regarded Russell with admiration, for all of its intelligence was bestowed by Russell, starting from when it was a blank slate.
“Then this is the place,” Russell crouched down, waved his hand, and the Prime Breath swept snow from the ice cap.
He then placed the Black Oil Dragon Egg on top of the ice cap.
At that moment, the ice cap melted rapidly as if startled, turning the thousand-year-old ice into a pool of warm water in an instant, and the moisture evaporated continuously, creating a foggy fairyland within a several dozen meters radius.
This was different from the scorching heat when the Shadowflame Great Dragon made its entrance.
The heat emitted by the Black Oil Dragon Egg was a mild warmth, but its power was no less formidable. Within a moment, the ice within a few dozen meters turned into water and then vanished in evaporation, exposing the layer of soil beneath, which quickly dried out.
On the surface of the soil, the Black Oil Dragon Egg had disappeared completely.
However, cracks began to spread in all directions, and within those cracks flickered a red light akin to magma.
The frequency of these flickers was as if something was breathing beneath them.
Standing on the soil, Russell looked around. Now, he was in the pit left after the ice had disappeared, like a Cold Spring Point on the snowfield. The only difference being that the Cold Spring Point still had a cap of ice above it, while here, the ice cap had completely vanished.
The warmth was confined within the pit. Beyond it, the power of the Black Oil Dragon Egg could not be felt.
Thus, the solid ice around the perimeter was still there, and the snow on top had not melted.
“Father…” Rossay’s voice came telepathically, “I am going to start my slumber now. When I wake up next, I’ll see you.”
“Rossay, how long do you need to sleep?”
“About half a month.”
“Alright, your father will wait for you,” Russell said.
Immediately after, he sensed through their mental connection that Rossay had begun to sleep, right below this pit.
The magma-like flickering red light around them was the breath emitted by Rossay as it slept.
“Half a month, in half a month I’ll be a Flying Dragon Knight… Thinking about it, I feel quite calm.” Perhaps because he had been excited for too long, Russell could approach it with equanimity without a trace of impatience—it was his, and it wasn’t going anywhere.
He leaped up and climbed out to a few meters high outside the pit.
Standing on the edge of the ice cap pit and looking down into it, he could feel more strongly the presence of a huge creature sleeping beneath the flickering red patterns.
Once the creature woke up, it would surely shake the heavens and the earth.
“Russell, why does Rossay need to sleep?” asked Polly in his mind, “I thought it was going to be born today.”
“Because it still has to accept the nurturing of the Earth’s power and blend that strength into this land, warming it,” Russell speculated. “Moreover, it probably needs to gather the power radiated here by the Shadowflame Great Dragon.”
The entire Shadowflame Grand Duchy, all its magical creatures, are built atop the power of the Shadowflame Great Dragon.
However, outside the Volcanic Oasis, the strength of the Great Dragon has dissipated too much to open up warm land. At such times, it is necessary for a Bipedal Flying Dragon to act as a “relay” to amplify the Great Dragon’s power and then open up a Warm Enclave.
In Russell’s view, Rossay’s half-month slumber is likely to gain the authority of this “relay.”
Only then can it open up a Warm Enclave.
“I see,” Polly nodded, signaling her understanding, “Do we keep waiting here then?”
“No,” Russell smiled, mounted the Unicorn, “We’ll go back first. When Rossay is about to wake up, we’ll come back to wait. It’s not too late… Besides, you and I have already synchronized our minds perfectly, it’s time to make a contract with Hape.”
But before contracting with Hape, Russell still had to visit Windmill Manor to see Lord Marcus.
