Chapter 288: Chapter 287: Belief (Added Chapter, Seeking Monthly Pass) Chapter 288: Chapter 287: Belief (Added Chapter, Seeking Monthly Pass) “Chirp chirp!”
Ros the Clay Dragon hovered in the sky above, its back carrying Baron Roman, whose gaze contentedly watched the Knight Regiment below in Glowing Valley.
Three years of strenuous battle service, in his opinion, had been more than worth it to earn the status of a dragon rider.
The battle on the ground ended swiftly. Hordes of Snow Ghosts were split apart, defeated, and their Ice Pellet Pearls harvested without leaving any trace.
“How strange, we’ve been in the Snowfield for several days now, and yet not a single Snow Demon in sight,” Baron Roman mused as he looked out over the distant Snowfield. Through the wind and snow, he could faintly make out groups of Snow Ghosts moving, but there was no sign of Snow Demons.
His brows furrowed, “Could it be that after Snow Giant Da lost an arm, he has called back all the Snow Demons? Or is it because Snow Giant Da is gravely injured and therefore can no longer disperse his power to condense Snow Demons?”
If that was indeed the case.
There would be no Ice Soul Pearls to harvest.
Although Baron Roman’s journey was mainly to harvest Ice Pellet Pearls for the unhatched Black Oil Dragon Ross, belonging to Russell, he did not discount the possibility of harvesting Ice Soul Pearls.
Only by harvesting enough Ice Soul Pearls could he further elevate his nobility, and perhaps in his lifetime, he really could take his family to the heights of an earldom. Then, his name, Roman Youguangxun, would surely be sung by generations to come.
With this thought in mind.
He immediately ordered, “Continue exploring deeper into the Snowfield to the west of the Mountain River Trade Route!”
The mission of the Knight Regiment in Glowing Valley was to first step onto the Mountain River Trade Route, then use the Cold Spring Points as centers from which to explore the surrounding areas, hunting Snow Ghosts and also clearing the trade route.
“The Sir commands, continue westward!”
“Westward, westward!”
The Knight Regiment made brief preparations and continued their journey deeper into the Snowfield, hunting down any groups of Snow Ghosts they encountered.
However, there was a limit to how deep they could venture into the Snowfield.
Once they ventured too deep and lost the protection of the Cold Spring Points along the way, the Knight Regiment could easily become lost on the Snowfield. The knights themselves were relatively safe, with their Battle Qi and Magic Elixirs for resupply at any time, but their steeds could not cope.
Though the warhorses had been bred over generations, almost as strong as Primordial Beasts, they were ultimately of ordinary bloodlines, and could hardly run as freely as Fantasy Beasts across the vast world.
If they exceeded their load-bearing limit, they were likely to freeze to death on the Snowfield.
If the warhorse died, the knight would be rendered immobile and unlikely to reach the nearby Cold Spring Point in time, eventually freezing to death on the Snowfield as well.
Fortunately, the Knight Regiment’s movements were typically accompanied by Bipedal Flying Dragons.
Bipedal Flying Dragons could survey the land from high above, and through their special sensing abilities, locate the Cold Spring Points on the Snowfield, providing timely shelter for the Knight Regiment.
Whoosh.
Baron Roman unfurled a map he carried with him against the wind, studying it closely, “About ten more kilometers to the west, there should be a new Cold Spring Point… I remember this Cold Spring Point, it’s been over twenty years since I last visited.”
This map had been personally drawn by Baron Roman’s father, Rod, who rode Ros the Clay Dragon to continuously fly and explore over the Snowfield.
He had mapped out most of the Cold Spring Points in the Snowfield surrounding Glowing Valley.
After Rod died in battle, and with Baron Roman failing to become a dragon rider, and fantasy beasts struggling to sense the presence of Cold Spring Points, most of them remained unvisited. The Knight Regiment also limited its activities to clearing Snow Ghosts around the trade route and their own territory.
“Chirp!” Mr. Ross replied, equally nostalgic.
“In the next three years, let’s give it our all!” Baron Roman rolled up the map, full of spirit, “If we can’t kill Snow Giant Da, can’t we still kill Snow Ghosts and Snow Demons? Even if the Riders of Blue Skin come, we’ll hunt them all the same!”
In the face of Roman’s lofty ambitions, Mr. Ross offered no response; Snow Giant Da was a fearful memory it preferred not to recall.
Had it not been moved by Baron Roman’s actions, it would never have agreed to the pact.
“As long as it is not contracted, it remains a free and independent entity, able even to disregard the orders of the Shadowflame Dragon.”
“Fighting for the Great Dragon was enough for once.”
“Alas, born into this world, dragons, like humans, crave freedom but seldom truly attain it. There are always various ties that bind.”
“I understand what you’re thinking,” Baron Roman sensitively perceived Mr. Ross’s gradually sinking mood and said softly in consolation, “but the Shadowflame Dragon is the root of our existence. Without it, we would be like trees without roots, like duckweed upon water… Even if the world is vast, where could we go?”
“Chirp!” Mr. Ross cried out once.
Baron Roman shook his head with a wry smile: “Leaving is not realistic; this is the foundation for you and me… But rest assured, from the first fall, the survival strategy of the Fluorescent Fungi Family has shifted from being bold and progressive to low-key.”
He looked at the clouds on the horizon and said with a sigh, “The second fall has further convinced me that only by being low-key can we endure.”
The prominent figures, such as Grand Duke Kunstan, had already died on the battlefield.
The slackers, like his second son Russell, were about to become Flying Dragon Knights.
These two stark examples before him made Baron Roman profoundly grasp the true essence of survival, which is to be low-key.
“Moreover, if you, Ross, hadn’t been pragmatic and low-key, refraining from aiding the Shadowflame Dragon, the sneak attack by the blue-skinned horse riders could have caused heavy losses to the Knight Regiment. People may not say it, but they are all secretly thankful to you, do you understand, Ross?”
“Chirp!”
In this moment, between one man and one dragon, amid the churning mists above the snowfield, a shared, firm belief was born.
…
“Eric, Grove, when you lead the Knights into battle on the snowfield, make sure not to be greedy and overextend yourselves; just clean out the Snow Ghosts around the territory.” In the snowfield above Grotto Village, Russell saw off the Knights.
“Yes, sir!” Eric responded in a muffled voice, and Kevin the Gold and Silver Wolfhound also barked twice in agreement.
Russell then looked at Grove, “I’m sending you to battle on the snowfield so soon after your wedding; you don’t resent me, do you?”
Grove scratched the back of his head: “Sir, everything Grove has now is a gift from you. To fight for you, not only am I willing, but my wife Fanny feels the same. There are absolutely no complaints.”
“Good, as long as Fanny doesn’t blame me.” Russell said with a laugh as he waved his hand, “Go and return quickly. After killing the Snow Ghosts, it won’t be too late to come back and start making babies.”
After saying this, Russell laughed heartily.
Jack and the other Knight Attendants laughed along, with even Eric letting out a couple of muffled chuckles.
After sending off the Knights, Russell did not linger himself, but also headed out onto the snowfield.
However, he wasn’t there to clear out Snow Ghosts around the territory but headed west towards Curved Blade Mountain, scouting potential new territory.
“Polly, let’s go here first and find the first Cold Spring Point,” Russell said, taking out a map and pointing out the direction to Unicorn Polly.
With Polly’s intelligence, she could completely understand the map.
The map was a copy obtained from Baron Roman.
“Rush,” Polly softly answered, then dashed through the air, moving at a speed of 200 kilometers per hour.
When encountering small groups of Snow Ghosts on the way, Russell would activate his Three Swords Style, swiftly slicing them apart, then his five-meter-long Thorn Whip lashed out, rolling over their heads one by one, collecting the Ice Pellet Pearls.
If they came across larger groups of Snow Ghosts, they would simply avoid or shake them off.
Two hours later, they successfully located the Cold Spring Point indicated on the map, which was close to abandonment. Completely covered by snow, if it weren’t for the snow melting into a big pit, it would be nearly impossible to find with the naked eye.
The five-meter-long Thorn Whip came in handy, sweeping across the surface of the ground, clearing the snow and then revealing a thin layer of ice.
By breaking the ice, they were able to enter the Cold Spring Point through the shaft.
