Chapter 267 - 267 266 Wind Blade Brown Bear
Chapter 267: Chapter 266: Wind Blade Brown Bear Chapter 267: Chapter 266: Wind Blade Brown Bear Having located the position of the Phantom Beast brown bear, the next steps were simple. Russell led Grove directly to the tallest fir tree.
“Roar!”
The Phantom Beast brown bear roared, trying to drive Russell and his party away.
“This is a Phantom Beast, Sir!” Grove’s eyes widened with excitement upon seeing an unclaimed Phantom Beast — a sight that would excite any knight.
Even a complacent Great Knight like Grove inwardly harbored hopes of becoming a Phantom Beast Knight.
“I know,” Russell said calmly. “This area has no manor; the forest is ownerless, so we can freely capture this big dumb bear.”
In fact, the forest had an owner — Duke Shadowflame.
However, as it was an uncultivated wasteland, many knights would go in to capture Fantasy Beasts, and Red Castle would turn a blind eye.
Moreover, since Grand Duke Kunstan had recently passed away, and Duke Shadowflame’s position was undecided, saying it was an ownerless forest wasn’t entirely untrue.
“Roar!” Seeing two humans and a handsome white horse ignoring it, the Phantom Beast brown bear roared again, trying to scare the humans away.
This was its territory, and the honey hanging on the tree was all its own!
“Big dumb bear, can you understand human speech?” Russell called out, trying to trigger “Lucky Whisper,” but it seemed to have no effect.
The Phantom Beast brown bear continued to roar: “Roar!”
“Sir, it doesn’t seem to understand human speech like some Fantasy Beasts,” Grove remarked.
“Roar!”
“It seems so.”
“Roar!”
“Sir, what shall we do?”
“Roar!”
“According to usual practice, naturally, we would subdue it by force. But I’m always merciful and prefer a willing deal,” Russell said with a slight smile, his eyes already spotting a large tree nearby and the oversized beehive hanging on a branch.
He was thinking of instructing Grove to fetch the honey.
The Phantom Beast brown bear, seeing its roars fail to frighten the two men, got truly angry and spat out two white wind blades from its mouth.
The wind blades sliced quickly, instantly snapping any touched trees.
However, Polly lightly dodged the wind blades, and Grove, too, leaped up to avoid them. The Phantom Beast brown bear didn’t seem to actually intend to hurt anyone; the aim of the wind blades was slightly off, indicating its intent to threaten more than to inflict harm.
“With all this effort, you could’ve just cut the branches and gotten to the honey,” Russell thought secretly, convinced that this was indeed a big dumb bear with limited intelligence.
Of course.
Limited intelligence also had its advantages — it made it easy to trick.
Russell pointed at the honey in the distance and said loudly, “Big dumb bear, do you want to eat the honey? I can help you.”
“Roar?” The bear was taken aback.
It seemed that it understood human language to an extent, or at least, from Russell pointing at the honey and speaking, it could mostly guess what he was saying.
“I can help you reach the honey, so you can have a feast,” Russell offered, then gave orders to Grove, “Go climb the tree, cut some honey, and throw it down to feed this big dumb bear.”
“Yes, Sir!” Grove’s eyes lit up, and his formerly passive heart was faintly stirred.
Seeing Grove rushing towards the tree with the beehive, the Phantom Beast brown bear became anxious: “Roar!”
“Easy there, big dumb bear, I’m cutting the honey for you,” Russell quickly diverted its attention, speaking while gesturing with his hands. “You’re too scared to climb trees; you’ll never get the honey on your own, but I can help you!”
The Phantom Beast Brown Bear seemed to understand and looked at Russell before turning its head to watch Grove, who was climbing the tree.
Then it started pacing back and forth on the spot, a bit impatient.
It appeared to be looking forward to Grove actually bringing some honey, yet worried that these two humans were not here to help it but to steal its honeycomb.
With the protection of Qi Round Vigor, Grove easily climbed up to the beehive amidst the swarm’s attack and then used his sword to cut a piece of the honeycomb. Under the watchful gaze of the Phantom Beast Brown Bear’s wide eyes, he threw the piece of honeycomb down.
“Awooo!” The Phantom Beast Brown Bear immediately scurried over, grabbed the honeycomb, and sat down on the ground with it, embracing the honeycomb with its paws and happily started to eat.
Seeing Grove was about to cut more honeycomb.
Russell hurriedly intervened, “Don’t rush to feed it!”
Grove obeyed, “Got it.”
Russell floated up riding Polly and came next to the Phantom Beast Brown Bear, “Big silly bear, I kept my promise and let you have some honey, didn’t I?”
“Awooo!” The Phantom Beast Brown Bear nodded repeatedly in an almost human fashion, easy to negotiate with when there was food.
After it finished one piece of honeycomb, it raised its head again, glancing at Russell then at Grove in the tree, “Awooo.”
“Give it another one,” Russell said.
Grove immediately threw down another piece of honeycomb dripping with rich honey, and the Phantom Beast Brown Bear once again buried its head and happily began to feast.
After three pieces of honeycomb had been thrown down, and the big silly bear began to ask for a fourth, Russell finally revealed his purpose, “Big silly bear, you can have honey, but you must recognize me as your master and obey my commands!”
The Phantom Beast Brown Bear showed its teeth and grimaced, “Roar!”
“Don’t be in a hurry to refuse. You like this kind of honey, right? Only I can provide it for you,” Russell gestured to Grove to throw over a piece of the honeycomb and, holding it, he smiled and said, “But if you don’t recognize me as your master, you won’t be able to eat it.”
“Roar!” The Phantom Beast Brown Bear attempted to snatch it.
But Polly simply flew up into the air, looking down from above at the Phantom Beast Brown Bear and even let out a Rush-like mocking laugh.
Once the Phantom Beast Brown Bear calmed down a bit, Russell continued, “Recognize me as your master and you can have the honey! Plus, there’s even better honey on my territory, a hundred times tastier than this. Don’t you want to try it?”
After some coaxing and deception, the Phantom Beast Brown Bear finally fell into thought.
Its small eyes looked to the left and to the right before rapidly spinning around. After quite a while, it abruptly stood up and lay prostrate by the hooves of Russell and Polly.
It had recognized a master.
“Ha ha!” Russell laughed proudly, a mere Fantasy Beast easily handled!
He immediately threw the honeycomb to the Phantom Beast Brown Bear and then reached out to pet its fur. Now that it had recognized a master, the Fantasy Beast did not know how to deceive, so it let Russell mess up its glossy, grayish-brown fur.
Not only did he pet it himself, but he also invited Grove over, “You pet it too. It’s a big silly bear, and so are you… Grove, on our way to Red Castle, then detouring to Blackgarden Mountain, you can try to make a contract with it the entire journey.”
“Ah!” Grove was stunned.
“If you can succeed, then this big silly bear will be your partner!” Russell himself didn’t care much for this Phantom Beast Brown Bear.
It lacked Beast King attributes and its magic seemed rubbish, making a contract unnecessary.
He didn’t even fancy the Red-eyed Rat King, so how could he be interested in this Phantom Beast Brown Bear? Thus, leaving it to a subordinate to contract was most appropriate.
Feeling excited for the first time in a long while, Grove knelt on one knee, “Thank you, Sir!”
“Work hard, Grove. Without contracting a Fantasy Beast, this life’s Battle Qi is wasted,” Russell said with a laugh. “After being promoted to Phantom Beast Knight, get married, have a few children, and your life will once again have meaning.”
Then the two of them cut down most of the honey from the tree, packed it in bags, and hung it on the back of the Phantom Beast Brown Bear for it to eat along the way.
The whole journey, it was Grove who took care of the Phantom Beast Brown Bear.
Russell just briefly tested the strength of the Phantom Beast Brown Bear and its magic—Rapid-Fire Wind Blades—it could fire wind blades like a machine gun, much more powerful and cooler than he had imagined.
“Let’s call it Wind Blade Brown Bear then.”
