Even After My Death
Chapter 354 - 269: The Capable Little Mouse

Chapter 354: Chapter 269: The Capable Little Mouse

Jiang Ning had silently activated the tiny bear-shaped camera pinned to her clothes as she pushed open the hospital room door.

She watched the patients and their families in the room, who originally didn’t trust Zhuo Kaiyan, gradually begin to be convinced.

Not until the first family member agreed to cooperate with Zhuo Kaiyan for photos, and saw that Zhuo Kaiyan indeed only took a few pictures before immediately taking out five hundred yuan from her bag and giving it to the patient in the bed, did the families of the other two beds start becoming restless.

This was real money!

"I, I can cooperate with you for the photo too."

"And my family here as well!"

The patients and their families from the other two beds all spoke up, one after the other.

Zhuo Kaiyan’s lips curled up upon hearing this, unsurprised by the situation, "Okay, don’t rush, one at a time. Uncle, you need to bring your ID too, let’s take another photo with it, and then it’ll be okay."

While taking photos for everyone, Zhuo Kaiyan noticed out of the corner of her eye someone standing at the doorway.

She turned her head slightly and saw that the person was just standing outside looking in, and not entering, assuming it was one of the patients’ relatives in this room.

Once she noticed that the figure was not filming with a phone, Zhuo Kaiyan turned her gaze back and didn’t bother herself about them.

Jiang Ning stood outside the door, and as Zhuo Kaiyan took photos of the last patient, she stepped in, walking up beside Zhuo Kaiyan to allow the bear camera to capture Zhuo Kaiyan’s actions more clearly. Then she asked with curiosity, "What are you doing? Why are you handing out money?"

Thinking Jiang Ning was a relative of a patient, Zhuo Kaiyan repeated what she had said earlier.

After listening, Jiang Ning nodded, "Your boss is really kind, doing charity so well."

Zhuo Kaiyan thought Jiang Ning truly believed her and relaxed her guard, "Yes, yes, many people say so!"

"Oh?" Jiang Ning asked casually as if it wasn’t important, "Have you been in this line of work long? Does your boss have a lot of money?"

"Sure thing! I’ve been working here for over half a year. In the first two months, we didn’t have to go out like this, but later on, as the audits became stricter, our boss sent us out. The boss has plenty of money!"

...

While chatting with Jiang Ning, Zhuo Kaiyan finished taking the third patient’s photo and then took out another five hundred yuan in cash from her bag to give to the patient’s family.

Jiang Ning watched her leave the room and followed her out.

Trailing a few steps behind Zhuo Kaiyan for a while, Jiang Ning realized Zhuo Kaiyan wasn’t entering every single room.

Zhuo Kaiyan was selective about her targets.

Before passing by each room, she would peek inside, and if she saw young people, she definitely wouldn’t enter; however, if there were only elderly people present, she would go in and try her luck.

After collecting enough evidence, Jiang Ning left the hospital in a hurry with Qi Xingzhou.

Jiang Ning transferred the evidence recorded by the bear camera to her phone, then had Qi Xingzhou call out the little gray mouse.

The fluffy little gray mouse was incredibly cute, with two pairs of large incisors poking out from his tiny pointy snout.

Jiang Ning had never kept a mouse before and didn’t know what they liked to eat.

She took out a few peanuts from her bag and placed them in front of the little mouse.

The mouse, called out by Qi Xingzhou, was not shy at all, blinking its little black-bean eyes. Seeing the peanuts Jiang Ning had taken out, its long whiskers twitched before it reached out with its tiny front paws to nibble on the peanuts, its cheeks puffing in and out with each bite.

Once it had finished eating, Jiang Ning, as usual, attached a tiny camera to it.

The well-fed Little Mouse zipped into the nearby drainage ditch and then quickly reappeared on the other side of the street.

Jiang Ning and Qi Xingzhou stood in the shade of the trees, watching as the little mouse sneakily slipped into the print shop’s main entrance.

Jiang Ning had no idea how Qi Xingzhou communicated with small animals, but in the few instances where they had asked for help from them, they had been exceptionally clever and reliable.

Little Mouse was no exception.

Jiang Ning opened her phone and saw the surveillance footage displayed on the screen.

Little Mouse was agile and very good at concealing itself. In the blink of an eye, it had avoided the shop owner’s gaze and slid into the print shop.

Aside from the restroom Jiang Ning had just used, the print shop had three other rooms and a small kitchen.

In these three rooms, only one door was closed. Little Mouse, equipped with a camera, had checked the other two open rooms, one a bedroom for sleeping and the other a cluttered storage room piled with various materials.

As for the room with the closed door, Little Mouse had a way in as well.

It burrowed under a pile of goods. The surveillance screen went dark and blurry, and Jiang Ning couldn’t see Little Mouse’s movements, but she could hear a noise similar to gnawing.

It seemed like Little Mouse was chewing on something.

Then, after a while, Jiang Ning heard voices speaking from her phone.

"Sun Hu, come and look at this, what’s going on here? Why did the information upload fail the review?" a woman’s voice rang out.

"Wait a moment... I’ll look after I finish this," a strange male voice replied.

Sun Hu?

Jiang Ning’s eyes narrowed.

It seemed her earlier guess wasn’t wrong.

Sun Hu was indeed hiding in the print shop.

And the woman who had first spoken was probably Shen Aizhi, who she had just followed into the print shop.

After some effort, Little Mouse finally gnawed a small hole in the corner big enough for it to go through.

It moved carefully, tiptoeing without being noticed by the other people in the room, and emerged from the pile of miscellaneous items in the corner.

Meanwhile, as Little Mouse stretched its body to stand up, the shadow-filled surveillance screen shifted, allowing Jiang Ning to see through the surveillance that there were only two people in the room—Shen Aizhi and Sun Hu.

Sun Hu was seated at a desk forging medical records. Once he finished his work, he got up and walked over to Shen Aizhi. After moving the mouse and finding the reason for the approval failure, he said, "No problem, just missing a picture, add it back and that should do."

Shen Aizhi patted her chest, "Good. You scared me to death."

Complaining, she added, "These platforms are getting stricter with their reviews these days, and who knows what they’re up to with all their changes. If it weren’t like this, we wouldn’t have to spend so much money taking those patient photos. That’s all pure profit!"

While re-uploading the documents, Sun Hu snorted, "Of course, it’s to prevent people like us from scamming money."

Shen Aizhi rolled her eyes, "We’re scamming money? The more we do, the higher the service fees the platform takes. In the end, aren’t we just making money for the platform?"

...

Little Mouse quietly stood by the leg of the table, listened for a while, then turned around and went back the way it came, slipping out through the small hole it had gnawed open.
