Chapter 468 - 420: A Glimpse of the Future (4th Update)
Chapter 468: Chapter 420: A Glimpse of the Future (4th Update)
The River of Time still boiled and surged, rolling waves endlessly mighty and boundless in magnitude.
Even if the giant stars from the highest reaches of the Heavenly Dome fell, they could not stir up significant spray upon its surface.
Yet this River of Time had been severed; Supreme beings from an Alien Race had been successfully blocked, cut off before the Mythical Era and could no longer pass through.
Had it not been for the presence of a Mysterious Person enveloped in Chaos Qi by his side, Ye Chen would have thought it was but an illusion.
Because everything before had been too shocking, akin to mythology, resembling an epic, he still found it unbelievable to this day.
Suddenly, Ye Chen turned to look at him, wondering who this divine being was, where he came from, and why he, as the crucial "him", prompted several Supreme beings from an Alien Race to project themselves down at an unimaginable cost, just to kill him.
All of it was too perplexing, and he could not unravel the mystery no matter how much he pondered.
Perhaps, only this Mysterious Person enveloped in Chaos Qi would know.
At the same time, the Mysterious Person enveloped in Chaos Qi also turned to look at Ye Chen, their formerly overwhelming and boundless dominance, which covered the Heavenly and Myriads of Realms and could support the Nine Heavens and Ten Earths, was now gone. In this moment, they appeared quite serene, like an ordinary person, returning to the basics.
However, Ye Chen could feel how profound those serene eyes were, as if they could completely see through his body, mind, spirit, and soul.
In front of him, he had no secrets at all.
In the end, Ye Chen felt his gaze settle on his forehead, where a faint sickle-like Moon Seal emerged.
This mysterious mark had accompanied him through his past and present life; he was yet unable to truly understand what it actually was.
But he knew that the Moon Seal was extraordinary.
After gazing at the Moon Seal for a long, long time, the Mysterious Person enveloped in Chaos Qi finally sighed faintly, the sigh laden with an indecipherable significance...
Could he know about the Moon Seal?
A thought struck Ye Chen, yet he did not ask.
Within the Chaos Fog, a voice whose gender was unknown spoke out: "I know you must have many, many doubts. What exactly they are, why they would cross the River of Time to kill you at great cost, why they call you the key ’him’, why I would intervene to save you."
Ye Chen nodded; all of it was bewildering, and he did not understand.
"I’m sorry, but you cannot know now because you are still too weak," the Mysterious Person enveloped in Chaos Qi said in a calm tone, but Ye Chen understood the meaning: he was too weak and not yet qualified to know the truth.
His strength was considerable among the younger generation, but facing those lofty beings who could traverse the River of Time, he was indeed as weak as an ant.
Yet he was not offended; he deeply realized that in this world, the strong were always revered. Otherwise, even if he were a young True King full of infinite potential, it would not suffice. Until he had fully grown and achieved sufficient strength, he would not be truly valued.
"But you also need not feel disappointed. When the time is right, we will naturally tell you and a few others. Telling you now would only harm you," the Mysterious Person said, "And in this lifetime, you all will be at the heart of events, our hope, and also the hope of this universe."
"Is it because among us, there exists the key ’him’?" Ye Chen said, "Aside from the actual ’him’, are all others merely pawns set around him, just to distract the Alien Race while ’he’ grows sufficiently strong to contend with them?"
The Mysterious Person replied, "You are not completely wrong, but neither are you completely right. The key ’him’ may not be a single person; it could be several people – all of you might be the ’him’, or perhaps none of you are."
Ye Chen was startled. Could it be that this powerfully unimaginable Mysterious Being also couldn’t ascertain who the key "him" was?
But he did not voice the question because he knew the other party would likely not answer; this was all a very important secret.
"Whether or not you’re the key ’him’, you are all very important to us, and in the future, you may all have the opportunity to grow to a level where you can battle Supreme beings from the Alien Race," the Mysterious Person added, "Especially you, quite exceptional. You are that person’s descendant and have received his Undying legacy."
Ye Chen trembled. Was the person the Mysterious Person referred to, the Saint Ancestor of the Combat Saint Lineage?
It was said that the Saint Ancestor was peerless, with Cultivation that reached the heavens and earth, achieving a Golden Body, an Invincible Emperor of the Mythical Era, with combat ability hailed as the pinnacle among Emperors and Kings.
Gazing at him silently, and after a long while, Ye Chen suddenly asked a key question, "Senior, was my undying past life because of your intervention?"
He had broached a crucial matter. In his past life, he had faced certain death, targeted by a conspiracy of several Ancient Great Powers that had made him a Holy Sacrifice. He thought he had perished completely, body and Dao alike, yet, in the end, he was reborn.
Originally, he thought it was merely luck, but later he discovered that someone had intervened from the shadows, saving him from the brink of death. He had been reborn and shackled in the deepest part of his True Spirit.
Surprisingly, the mysterious person surrounded by Chaos Qi did not deny it. Their gaze seemed to reach down the River of Time as if looking towards the Eternal Sky, with the vicissitudes of eternity emerging as they said, "Correct, your survival is due to our intervention, for you are crucial and cannot die. The future necessitates your existence."
Indeed, Ye Chen’s guess was confirmed. He didn’t know whether to feel relieved or sorrowful.
Relieved at his own immortality, sorrowful for being under surveillance, unable to simply die.
"I know there are many doubts in your mind, countless questions you want to ask, like about the Destruction of the Mythical Era. But for now, they cannot be spoken," said the mysterious person surrounded by Chaos Qi with a soft sigh.
"What is seen is not always real, and what is imagined is not always illusory."
All of a sudden, they uttered a phrase that seemed cryptic, but Ye Chen took deep note of it.
Ye Chen pressed for answers, asking, "Are you the Emperor from the Mythical Era?"
Speaking of the Emperor and the Mythical Emperor, just those two simple words could collapse the Eternal Sky and make the River of Time boil over, causing the Heavenly Stars to descend and the Heavenly and Myriad Clans to bow in worship to that supreme existence.
That is the Absolute Peak of Humanity, an existence on par with the Heavenly Dao, the ultimate level every cultivator aspires to reach in their lifetime.
Now, as Ye Chen gazed at the person before him surrounded by Chaos Qi, he suspected they were indeed the Emperor from the Mythical Era, for no one else could be so powerful.
"It could be said that I am, or it could be said that I am not..." came the ambiguous reply from within the Chaos Fog, causing Ye Chen to furrow his brows. Could there not be a clear answer?
"Is and is not, both actually do not matter. What matters is the effort to safeguard the peace of the Ten Thousand Clan. The future will be very difficult," they said with another vague statement.
But Ye Chen grasped the focal point now, the future would be tough.
His heart quivered as he suddenly remembered a scene he had glimpsed not long ago in a distant corner downstream of the River of Time. It was vividly blood-red as if dyed by blood, seemingly the blood of all spirits that stained the river, and it was severed, making him uneasy.
What was to happen in the future that the river appeared blood-red and time flowed through blood?
It seemed akin to the great Destruction of the Mythical Era when all clans withered and the Great World collapsed.
"Elder, I wish to see the future." Suddenly, Ye Chen spoke, making a request to the mysterious person surrounded by Chaos Qi.
The person, as if having anticipated this, showed no surprise and replied, "The future is difficult to probe and full of uncertainties. Once touched, it brings to bear consequences, and many Great Tribulations will befall you. You may suffer a pain akin to having your body shattered, risking annihilation of both Form and Spirit. Do you still wish to see?"
Ye Chen smiled, appearing calm and resolute, "I am already a dead man who has died once; what is there to fear? Besides, I am a descendant of the Combat Saint Lineage. The Combat Saint dared to challenge Heaven itself, so why should I be afraid?"
"I only wish to witness a scene of the future, to understand the upcoming chaos and bloodshed, to bear it all."
After gazing at him for a long while, the mysterious person surrounded by Chaos Qi finally nodded, "Very well, since that is your wish, I shall let you glimpse the future."
They placed a hand on Ye Chen’s shoulder, slender and jade-like, exuding a gentle warmth that made him feel secure.
But in this moment, endless Great Daoist Power was at work, reviving. Strands of Divine Principle exploded, Heavenly and Ten Thousand Paths took effect, influencing time and space, blessing Ye Chen.
At that moment, Ye Chen felt an incredible power in his eyes. He looked downstream at the River of Time and instantly pierced through the misty haze, looking towards the farthest end.
The blood-dyed River of Time distinctly appeared before him, its waves roaring and surging to the Heavenly Universe, and Ye Chen clearly saw bodies drifting upon the river.
"It is them..."
His heart trembled. On the drifting bodies in the River of Time, he saw familiar figures, such as Wang Ming, the War King, the Peacock King, and other friends from his past life.
He also saw several figures of extreme beauty, one of the most beautiful fairies in Ten Thousand Domains. However, now they lay sprawling on the bloodstained river, motionless, their breath ceased. These were the Goddess, Chen’er, and several beloved wives.
Lastly, a scene flashed before his eyes as if he traversed Eternal Time and Space, reaching an unreachable future, immersing himself and seeing upon the lofty Emperor’s Throne in the Infinite Starry Sky a majestic figure before whom the Heavenly and Myriad Realms would bow. With hair like a waterfall and an imposing presence surpassing the Infinite Starry Sky, their deep eyes held more than stars could contain.
That person was himself!
