Chapter 96: Chapter 4. Nothing to lose
«If this is really such a joke, then it’s not funny at all!»
Having unexpectedly received such an offer from the Duchess’s butler, Jeremy Seibel regarded it as nothing but mockery. After all, this was the person the guy least expected to get help from.
The baron’s youngest son even got the impression that the butler of the Edelweiss residence had a special dislike for him from the very beginning. It was clearly felt in his every look and sigh. And now, when this man suddenly said something like that, Jeremy, of course, did not believe him.
— Sir Phillips... What are you trying to achieve? — The imprisoned prince of the north couldn’t hide his indignation.
After all, from the outside it really looked like a complete mockery of him. While the Princess of the North gave the order to imprison the guy, her most loyal servant, on the contrary, came to free him. Who the hell in their right mind would believe that...?!
— My Lord, I understand that you have your reasons for not trusting me.
— Really?
— And yet. Do you have any other way out of this situation?
Jeremy pursed his lips, squinting suspiciously at the old man.
— Then why did you suddenly decide to offer me help?
Jeremy knew firsthand that Butler Phillips was devoted to Celine de Loon like a dog in a chain. He followed all her orders and was literally her eyes and ears in this castle. So how could he suddenly do something like that behind her back? To be honest, Jeremy would rather believe that Baron Seibel himself would suddenly take pity on his son and send him help. Not like this pedantic and terribly obnoxious old man.
— It’s easier than you think, — he said, — in fact, I just don’t want you to cause Her Ladyship any more trouble.
— What...?
— Since you came here, your very existence has been one big problem for the Duchess. And even now, you’re forcing Her Ladyship to deal with the mess you’ve made. So I just want to get her out of it.
— ...
«What kind of reason is that...?»
The guy was extremely wary of the butler’s every word. In other words, he wants to rid his mistress of a troublesome hubby so that his stay here would no longer burden the duchess? But... In that case, wouldn’t it be easier to just wait for the execution? Why all the fuss to save him? Jeremy couldn’t understand it.
— My Lord, what do you say? — After some silence, the old man asked the question again.
«.....»
Jeremy was still looking at the butler with obvious suspicion. And yet...
«Although I have no idea what this old man is really trying to achieve, but anyway... I’m going to die soon anyway, right?»
Even if it was just a trap set for him by the old butler, wouldn’t Jeremy really care if he fell into it or not? In any case, apart from that, there were only two outcomes waiting for him — execution tomorrow morning or imprisonment in a dungeon in agonizing anticipation of it. And both of these options were clearly no better.
So... At least, even if it was just a pathetic flutter before death, it was still something than nothing. After the Prince of the North learned about Runny’s unjust death, it was as if he had lost the fear for his life that had always existed in him before.
— Well... — he finally said slowly, — if you’re really ready to do this, then I’ll do it.
— I’m glad to hear that, — the old man replied with satisfaction.
— But... How exactly are you going to help me? — the guy asked warily.
— Actually, at the moment I see only one way out of this situation.
Butler Phillips pointedly adjusted his glasses on the bridge of his nose.
«Eh?»
While the butler was leaning against the prison bars, Jeremy Seibel listened attentively to what he was saying.
***
So, when the Prince of the North found out about the butler’s plan, he really found it extremely risky. And yet... It really didn’t seem like there were any other options.
The gist of the old man’s plan was to help Jeremy leave the north castle, and to do so almost in full view of everyone. A few days ago, the head of the northern merchant guild arrived at the Edelweiss residence, who visited the castle every year to carry out repairs there. This time, the butler decided to update the decoration in the lobby of the first floor and for this he called the head of the guild to order some interior items from him.
As a result, it took several days to compile the final list of ordered materials. And tomorrow morning, the guild leader was going to leave the castle to begin fulfilling this order. And... Jeremy Seibel was also going to leave the castle with him.
More precisely, the guy had to pretend to be part of the luggage in his carriage. When Jeremy first heard about this idea, it seemed just crazy to him. How could he possibly escape from here like this?! What if the guards wanted to search the carriage and easily found him there? Not to mention a lot of other conventions and uncertainties...
It seemed to the Prince of the North that this very idea was the craziest thing that could be thought of.
Still, Butler Phillips managed to convince him that he had really thought of everything to minimize the risk of their plan being exposed. Although the guy resisted for a while, but eventually came to the conclusion that he somehow had no other way out.
If he doesn’t take this chance tomorrow morning, before the verdict is announced, then there may not be another one. And besides, he was already almost a dead man with nothing to lose anyway.
Therefore, after thinking about it carefully, Jeremy still decided to leave the castle in the carriage of the head of the merchant guild and gave his answer to the butler. So there was nowhere to retreat now.
After the butler left, the baron’s youngest son only sighed heavily, in agony of waiting for his escape.
«Well, I hope everything goes well...»
At least if he doesn’t die tomorrow, that will be enough.
