Chapter 74: Chapter 24. Meeting in the slums

— Hey, didn’t the mood get too good here?

Suddenly, three tramps surrounded the child.

— Boy, what have you got there?

One of the ugly bandits reached out to check what Jacob was hiding under his shirt. At the same moment, the boy realized that there was nowhere to run. It was his miscalculation. He was usually careful enough to avoid situations where he might run into bandits. Although it didn’t always work, thanks to his small stature, Jacob was most often able to escape and remain unharmed.

However, today, since he was so happy that he was finally able to get food for the past few days, he couldn’t help but forget about his usual caution. He didn’t even have time to escape before the tramps surrounded him from all sides.

In the end, Jacob couldn’t put up the slightest resistance when a healthy man’s hand, which was much stronger than his own, forcefully snatched away what he had worked so hard for today.

— Ha, look at this, — the bandit shook a piece of bread in front of his friends.

— Boy, didn’t they teach you to share with your elders? — The second one grinned nastily.

— Exactly, exactly.

Jacob paled.

— Oh, give it back... — His voice was weak because the boy did not dare to say something rude in the face of these three men. And even more so to demand your bread back. All he could do was plaintively beg in front of those who were stronger than him.

Tears almost welled up in Jacob’s eyes, because it meant that he would have to spend another hungry night.

— Eh? What did you say? — The head of the trinity just waved him off, — However, I don’t care. You’re not empty-handed today, so you’re going to leave in one piece, but be prepared next time...

The man did not have time to finish, as his gaze suddenly caught on something. In the next instant, the bandits had already lost interest in the little boy.

— Hey, look, who’s that here?

Amidst the terrible landscape of the slums, a child appeared out of nowhere, whose appearance did not quite match the local conditions. This girl’s clothes were also shabby and did not look the best, but at the same time she looked clearly more expensive than most of the locals. It seemed enough to the robbers.

The tramps approached her, leaving Jacob behind. The boy was so surprised that he didn’t even think to run away as soon as possible. He just froze in place and continued to watch what was happening.

— What’s the matter? — The person with the extraordinary golden eyes spoke in a low voice.

Despite the serious tone of the girl, all three burst out laughing.

— Little girl, are you lost? — The man who was in charge of them asked, crossing his arms over his chest.

She looked at them with an indifferent gaze.

— no.

— Look at her clothes. It’s worn, but it looks much better than ours. Could it be a little lady from a bankrupt noble family?

— hm... You’re right. It looks like she’s not from around here, — another agreed.

— Little lady, you don’t have to be afraid. We’ll take you home, — the tramp grinned nastily.

"It looks like they want to take her away to get the coins from the lost aristocrat..." thought Jacob, continuing to stand aside and watch what was happening.

For someone with even the slightest relation to the nobility, entering a place like this, much less without guards, was equivalent to signing a death sentence. At best, a person will be robbed and released alive. And at worst... Especially since it was a child. The girl looked about the same age as Jacob himself.

However, despite such a creepy environment, the girl did not look scared at all. Her gaze was just as emotionless, as if nothing special had happened.

— Come on, come with us... — one of the tramps tried to touch her. But at the moment when he was just about to do it...

Suddenly, blood was spilled. Jacob stared in shock at the man’s hand, which had been in place just a moment ago, and now lay on the dusty ground, blood gushing from it.

Everything happened in just a split second.

— I hate dealing with cockroaches.

The bandits rushed at her without hesitation.

— You little bitch!

In the next moment, Jacob watched the unexpected confrontation between the child and the bandits, which could not even be called a confrontation. Despite their numerical advantage and obvious physical superiority, all three tramps were soon defeated.

The dirty alley was splattered with blood, and there were several corpses lying there.

«.....»

Jacob froze in shock and did not know what to do. He only came to his senses at the moment when that girl was about to leave.

"Wait!"

Overcoming his own fear, the boy suddenly called out to her.

It was the first time in his life that he had met such a strong man in these slums, and Jacob Osman was so impressed by it that he could not restrain himself.

She turned to him with the same cold expression on her face. At this point, Jacob began to stutter.

"If I may... I am... I’d like to come with you," he said hesitantly.

«.....»

He did not receive any response to his request. The girl just turned around and continued walking. However, at the moment when Jacob’s shoulders were already slumping in frustration, she suddenly stopped.

— What’s the matter? Didn’t you say you were going to follow me?

The heart of the boy who was born and raised in the very hell of this world began to beat faster.

— yes!

At his own risk, Jacob Osman decided to follow this girl, about whom he knew absolutely nothing, and at the same time he had a strange premonition that this meeting would radically change his fate.

On that day, he chose for himself a man whom he vowed to serve until the end of his days.
