Chapter 93: The Magical Cave

Viviana couldn’t explain the excitement in her heart. As she leaned forward, Lionel leaned forward too, and there was less than a meter distance between them.

"You’re that interested, huh, Bellissima?" Lionel said in a mocking tone but Viviana didn’t care about his mocking.

She looked right into his eyes.

"Wouldn’t it be..." he whispered.

Viviana, fearing that she might miss what he says, leaned forward. She almost slipped from the chair as she was already sitting at the edge. But she balanced herself even without the chair. She wanted to know.

"...more fun if you talked about it to Leander?" Lionel asked.

"What?" Viviana looked at him and he was holding back his laughter.

The only time she shows her emotions freely is when she talks about Leander. She is cute. And he could see the changes in her from the day he met her at the party. She has gotten a lot more curious about Leander and in a good way too.

So, it’s not just Leander who changed. She changed after their marriage too. Intimacy changes a lot of things, doesn’t it?

Lionel found the nasty snake of jealousy rearing its head in his heart. He didn’t want to feel that way. It’s Leander!

Viviana with a feigned angry snort, sat back on the chair glaring at Lionel. He couldn’t stop laughing but his laugh ended rather abruptly as if something disturbed him.

"I’ll get back to the story. Darcia and Leona made it a habit that they watch the sunset every evening. Of course, Leona couldn’t watch the sun disappear in the horizon ever because she had to be home then otherwise her mother would worry. Darcia’s greatest wish in those days was to watch the sunset with Leona... Just to wait until the sky goes dark. But she never got to do that..."

Viviana took a deep breath. She still hasn’t seen many sunsets. She’s seen many sunrises alone, but never a sunset.

"So, one day, while they were exploring the caves, they took a less travelled route that was warned as dangerous by Father Patrick. Guess who wanted to go through that path anyway?" she asked Lionel.

"I’m gonna guess it was Leona?" he asked.

Darcia is the cautious and logical person among the two, and more feminine. Leona, is the total opposite of Darcia.

"Yep," Viviana nodded. "And like always, Darcia followed Leona even when she was scared. Leona would always ask Darcia to walk to her front wherever they go. Darcia who was a fearful person was not happy about it. She had to hold the lantern and had to walk in the front while Leona would walk behind her with a large stick..."

"Isn’t that for protection?" Lionel asked as Viviana appeared to be questioning that. "Usually in crowded places parents would ask their children to walk in front of them so that they are sure that they are safe and not lost in the crowd."

"I know," Viviana nodded. She understood that when she got her parents. They would hold her hands and would ask her to walk in the front when they are in unsafe places.

"Darcia learned it later in her life too. But Darcia never thought that Leona was putting her in danger although she was scared to walk to the front alone. Leona would stand in front of her whenever she was in danger. Once, a spider popped in front of her out of nowhere, and BOOOM!!! Leona was in front of her with her stick and ended that spider. She would hold her hand whenever she was scared and..."

Viviana didn’t know why, but the time when Leander stood in front of her came to her memory. And when she was scared back in his house, he held her hand. He didn’t let go of her hand until they reached home.

Ah! Why do I keep remembering Leander at times when I think about Leona? That’s not good. I can never think those two are the same! They are not! Leander is a member of the Kastello mafia family.

"They found a secret cave..." Viviana continued. She did not want to delve on that dangerous thought. There is no tangent between Leona and Leander. Leona is a true friend who just wanted to keep her safe.

Leander... Well, she didn’t know who he is.

"Secret cave?" Lionel asked. His eyebrows were raised.

Viviana saw his lost interest returning. And she nodded.

"A secret cave formed by an underground river. The cave had a stream running in and leaking through the cracks in the rocks. There was a big naturally formed cistern—a well—where the water was collected before it left the cave to join the sea... Although the water was stagnant there was no moss or dirt in it. The water was clear as glass reflecting the dark cave on one side and the bright sky on the other. The setting sun rays illuminated the surface of the glittering water and it appeared as a floor of orange marble,"

"Magical," Lionel said and he was very curious. "Is there really a place like that?" he asked.

"Maybe..." Viviana shrugged. "But in our story there sure was..." she winked.

If he can tease about Leander’s tattoo, she can tease about the existence of this cave too.

Lionel understood her teasing but he had nothing to add to that.

Viviana continued with the description of the cave. "In the middle of the well, however, was a pillar of stone. Not a single stone, but a large number of pebble-sized stones arranged one over the other. Darcia thought that the well must not be too deep if pebbles are in it, but Leana stopped her before she stepped in."

Lionel was listening curiously without even blinking his eyes.

"Leona showed Darcia a piece of a marble platform that stood in the middle. The pebbles were arranged on top of the platform. And as the kids looked keenly, they realized that the stones were arranged like a Jenga tower to make sure the stone on top of them won’t topple over..."
