Chapter 46: Secrets Of Past
Melanie Filia Dei.
The surname Filia Dei is Latin for "daughter of God". In other words, she was an orphan who didn’t even know who her parents were. The orphanage run by St. Michael’s Church had a tradition of naming their orphans as sons/daughters of God.
He promised money to the orphanage. They were in a prime spot and all they had to do was relocate. He was willing to pay for everything including modern amnesties for the new building. But those fools in robes couldn’t appreciate his good heart. And they dared to threaten his family.
So, he taught them a lesson!
’You will burn, Peter Kastello! For killing Leo! You will burn with your entire family!’
Shouted the orphan, uncontrollable by the nuns standing beside her. He wanted to squish her neck immediately. She needed to die, he decided then...
But he didn’t want the reporters to have something to write about.
He commanded his men to kill her that night, Georgios Russo being one of them. After what happened in the morning, Russo was not keen on killing another child. But he had to obey the order of the don. He and the other man returned bearing the news that the child had passed away in the hospital.
That was the end of it. That child was already in a pathetic state. Her death was inevitable.
Peter took in a deep breath. He still remembered her. Her eyes haunted him for a year, he had to return to Abenney to confirm that she died. He didn’t know why he was scared of a dying orphan, but...
She is dead.
When Evander mentioned a woman with demon eyes, he remembered that girl first. But that girl is dead. That girl couldn’t have been alive to hurt Evander, and she cannot be here with Leander.
It is impossible.
But her eyes...Ugh!
Peter swallowed the entire glass and asked for more Scotch. He cannot be haunted by onyx-brown eyes at his age. It’s not that uncommon if he sees them on a lot of people these days.
But it cannot be ignored. The fire in Abenney caused a lot of trouble. He had to make a lot of changes in his household after that. He made sure he tied all the loose ends. But what if there were some left?
Russo, at the twilight of his life, wanted to leave serving him. He didn’t agree with "murdering" children.
But it was not murder. It was cleansing.
Peter honestly couldn’t understand why the death of around a hundred orphans affected Russo that much. He was not planning on doing it. He was pushed to do it. He offered them money, but rather than taking money, they wanted to stab him in the chest.
So, he did what he did to protect his empire.
And they were orphans. Who cares? It’s not like they’d be missed. They had no one to remember them. In fact, he did them a favor by gifting them death.
Russo didn’t understand that. He even cried that he had a daughter the same age as those children. He should have killed Russo’s daughter with him so that they could have been together.
And now... Why did Russo’s daughter find Leander? How much does she know? Is she planning something?
Leander surely cannot find out what happened then in Abenney. He already is rebelling. He even refused to obey his order to marry the Donatello girl. He cannot let him off the leash. He cannot afford to lose Leander.
Not now. Not when Evander has turned useless.
Peter drank more to soothe his troubled heart. No matter what, he will not see the empire he built shaking. He will make sure his empire stands forever. For that, he will mow down any threat even before it takes root.
But he cannot get rid of Russo’s daughter openly. He should be careful about that.

"Miss Russo..."
Viviana opened her eyes to the gentle voice and wiped the corner of her eyes. Steve was standing in front of her. He was minimizing his stature to look not intimidating.
"Madam has arrived..." Steve said and bowed his head.
"Yes, I’ll..."
Viviana stood up and fixed her clothes. She didn’t know why Leander’s mother wants to meet her. Everyone thinks that she is Leander’s mistress. And she didn’t think that Leander’s mother would bother with her son’s mistress.
She might want to warn me...?
Viviana sighed loudly. She had no idea why she is getting tangled with Leander like this. Everything is so unnecessary.
Viviana noticed Leander talking to a middle-aged lady. Evander was standing by her side talking to someone else. She figured that she must be their mother. She doesn’t know much about Leander’s mother except for that old photo she had seen.
The mafia families keep their women hidden and not out for public view. Those women were only known in high-end stores and salons. Other than that, no one would even know who they were if they walked alone in the streets.
At first glance, Viola Kastello appeared kind. But when Viola looked at her, her eyes turned hostile.
"Hello," Viviana smiled politely. "I am Minerva Russo."
"Hmm," Viola pressed her lips and looked at her from top to bottom. "So, you found your way to the youngest’s bedroom!" she sneered.
Viviana bowed her head. It turns out that she is considered Leander’s mistress by his mother. She didn’t want to answer Viola. She is not trying to become the daughter-in-law of the Kastello family. So, she didn’t have to make an impression on Viola.
Viola held her chin and pulled to look at her. She then turned Viviana’s face from side to side to have a good look. With a tilted head, Viola smirked. "I didn’t believe it when I heard that you look like Helena, but..."
Viviana’s eyes brightened. So, her name is Helena? Judging by the interest of every woman around Leander in Helena, she must be Leander’s, first love. What happened to her? Did she die or marry someone else?
So, Leander was grieving for his first love. That’s why he never let another woman near him. Interesting...
Viviana didn’t peg Leander for someone who stayed single because he was still pining for his long-lost first love. But he raises cats, and she didn’t know that either! Turns out, she knows nothing much about Leander after all. Even Leander Kastello can be a romantic!
For every Evander Kastello, there is someone like Leander. There sure is a balance, isn’t it?
But she curbed her enthusiasm. She knew Leander is not that different from Evander. If the circumstances are right, all men are the same. She hasn’t forgotten what Leander did to her that day.
That hurt a lot!
