Chapter 301: The Reason He Turned His Back on Her

Chapter 301: The Reason He Turned His Back on Her

Viviana pulled the baby close to her chest and scooted backward until she touched the wall. The footfall sounded familiar, but she didn’t want to take a chance.

Leander was not home yet. She wondered if anything happened to him. Leander would have defended his home.

That can’t be the case. Leander will be safe!

Even through the rough patch in their marriage, she didn’t doubt that Leander abandoned her to be killed. She believed Leander will surely have a hold of this situation.

She just has to hold on until he arrives.

Hugging the baby close to her chest, she looked for anything that she could defend herself with. Sadly, she had nothing lying around.

She didn’t have strong arms, but she fought with her hands as much as possible. She carefully placed the baby on the floor. The baby was wrapped in her swaddle. The baby was stunned by the loss of her warmth and stopped crying.

Crouching under the bed, she waited for the person to come near her. That person was walking toward the bed. It must not have been hard for him to figure out that she was under the bed. The baby was crying up until a few seconds ago.

Her heart was beating on her throat and she could hear her racing heartbeat. She sucked in a deep breath and fisted her hands as tightly as she could.

From behind the nightstand, a foot, wearing polished oxfords stepped out. The neat line of the tailored silk trouser swayed as he stepped forward. She’d recognize that swag anywhere.

"Leander?" she crawled out.

Just then she heard some bullets getting inside her room. The light in the room got taken out and darkness surrounded everywhere. The baby started to cry again.

She picked the baby up.

"Leo, I knew you’d come for me..." She let out a cry of joy and tried to get out from under the bed. Her husband is here and her safety is assured.

"Lemon," he knelt in front of her. He had two guns in his hands.

Placing one gun down, he covered the top of her head as she almost hit the bed. "Stay in," he pushed her back in.

"Are you hurt anywhere?" she tried to touch him and he held her hand.

"I’m fine. You?" he asked.

"I’m safe. The baby too," she added. Again, he didn’t even ask about the baby. "What about everyone else? My puppies?" she questioned.

"It’ll be fine, Lemon," he squeezed her hand.

She could only see a little glimmer in his shiny eyes in the dim light. She couldn’t figure out his expressions.

"Who are they, Leander?" she asked.

He didn’t answer her. He just stared at her. He then took out a gun he had in his holster and held it out to her.

"You are going to leave?" she asked.

She didn’t know how to use a gun. It would be a useless prop in her hand. But she didn’t worry about that. The gunshot sounds were echoing everywhere, and she could hear bullets spraying inside the room they were in. If Leander even lifts his head, he might get shot.

She was scared he would get hurt.

"Don’t leave," she held his hand. "They’re here for you. They’ll kill you if they see you."

"I have to," Leander said. "Just stay here."

He handed the gun to her. Viviana didn’t want to get the gun. "You stay with me, Leander," she said choking with tears.

Leander sighed. "Just have this with you. You’ll just have to pull the trigger in case I..." he then paused. "Never mind," he kept the gun back in the holster.

He thought it would be a better idea for her to have a gun to protect herself. But then he remembered the day his father handed him the gun for his protection. He didn’t use the gun for his protection. He only used it for his father’s protection. And the day he killed a guy was the day he found a part of his soul missing.

Yes, he did that to protect his dad. Yes, it was self-defense. And yes, it hurt his soul.

Every time he takes a life he loses a small part of his soul to darkness; he loses his happiness. He can live with the decision numbing his heart, but he knows—he is losing the light in his soul.

That is the reason he got attracted to Viviana in the first place. She showed him the light. The light he missed in his soul.

And so... he will not let the same thing happen to her.

She obviously does not want the gun. But she will use it; not to protect herself but for the baby she has. And then she will lose a part of her soul to darkness too.

Her loss will be his loss. He didn’t want to lose her light.

"Melanie, listen to me," he held her hand. Bowing her head, she was crying. He heard the noises around. It didn’t sound good. If his plan was a success they should have killed all the assassins by now. But the fight is still going on. He did not find that right.

He needs to act. He needs to protect her at all costs.

"Jo!" he called her. His heart skipped a beat as he called her by that name. He didn’t remember calling her by this name much. He still didn’t remember his childhood. And yet that name rolled on his tongue smoothly. It must be his muscle memory.

Viviana looked at him. She was so anxious she didn’t realize he called her using the name Leona used to call her.

"I will not use this gun. I will stand by the door. In case I... If someone else gets inside the room, you know where to get~"

"No!" Viviana interjected him. She understood what he was saying.

He says he will save the bullets in the gun for her to use in case he no longer is able to use the gun. He’s asking her to use the gun to protect herself after his death. She will not accept it!

"No. I am not going to use the gun, Leander. Either you use it, or I join you. I swear on all that’s holy," she said.

She was not giving up hope. She was filled with hope. She knew Leander would be able to pull through his somehow. He will be safe just to protect her. She had to give him a reason to live.

Leander pressed his forehead on hers. His eyes watered. Again and again, she proves how much she loves and trusts him.

He kissed her forehead and pushed her in. "Stay here. Do not move."

Viviana nodded. Leander picked up his gun and stood up. She watched as he turned and walked away from her. Looking at his broad back, which was dark and wide, she realized something.

This is not the first time he had turned his back on her. He did so many other times too.

And...

Every time he turns his back on her, he does so to protect her!

"Is it the Vitale family?" she asked.

They should be the ones trying to hurt him.

Leander stopped and looked at her. "Get your head in," he said.

He must be smiling. She could see his teeth a little in that dim light.

"I love you, Leander," she said. She will say it again and again for him to hear.

She scooted back, fixing her eyes on him. Through the window, flashes of lights from the gunfire illuminated the room. As he walked away, in a flash of light, she saw bright wings on his back that extended to the length of the room.

My guardian angel Michael...

The next moment, the image of Leona enveloped in flames flashed in her memory.

She shook her head. She shouldn’t be thinking of Leona. Leander is not Leona. Leander will not die on her.

Hugging the baby, she rocked her. "It’s okay, baby... Your father will not die. He will protect us..."

The bedroom door closed behind Leander, and she heard the gunfight intensifying. There was a lot of noise in the living room. Viviana rocked the baby while humming a song.

She didn’t know how long the fight went on. But after what seemed to be an eternity, the noises and the flashes of lights stopped.

Pressing her cheek to the floor, Viviana looked at the door. The door had a lot of holes in it. Dust rose like thick smoke. The entire place smelled like gunpowder. She hated that smell. It was almost the same as the smell of fire.

She heard someone walking toward the door. It was then she noticed the gap between the door and the floor was dark. Something was blocking the door; someone was blocking the door.

Her heart skipped a beat.

No! It won’t be Leander. No! It can’t be...

Through the holes in the door, she saw a figure kicking the one blocking the door. His hand reached for the doorknob.

Who is it?
