Chapter 279: You People
Viviana’s smile turned to a grin as Leonardo’s car approached the house.
*Woof* *Woof*
She turned at Juno who was running to her with her loudest bark, her grin still lingering.
Her eyes left Leonardo’s car for just a moment. A loud bang echoed around.
Before her instinct drove her to look to that side, she saw a splash of red and heard a whimper.
"Juno!"
She ran to the dog slumping on the ground, lifeless. Part of the dog’s skull was blown off. There was no way the dog survived.
The four puppies ran to their mother hearing her scream. They circled Viviana as she held the lifeless body of Juno.
"Wh- How? Why?"
She turned to the side where the loud bang originated. Leonardo was looking in her direction with his head popped out of the car window. He had a smoking gun in his hand, still pointed in her direction.
She remembered the last time he had his gun pointed at her. That time he tried to kill Leander but ended up hurting her.
This time, he killed the dog she loved.
She wanted to understand him. She wanted to know why he casually did such a cruel thing.
But then she couldn’t care.
"You people..." she gritted her teeth. She didn’t know what else to say.
She too was one of them. What more can she say?
Leander’s men surrounded her. She didn’t hear anything but the soft whimpers of the puppies. The runt who was almost abandoned by Juno was the one who wailed the loudest.
When she looked to the side, Leonardo’s car was reversing. Through the tinted glasses, she couldn’t see anything.
"He says that he thought that dog was attacking you and he tried to save you. He’s leaving, Signora," Luca said.
Viviana didn’t want to say anymore. She felt blank. Picking up the crying puppies she walked inside the house.
"Bury the mother," she said.
She heard Leonardo’s car leaving. She didn’t feel the urge to stop him.
She was angry and she couldn’t stop her tears. Hugging the puppies, she sobbed.
"I’m sorry your mother was killed... I’m sorry... Just because she was associated with me she was killed... Had I left her alone and she never knew me, she never would have come for me. You’d still have your mother. It’s my fault... I’m sorry..."
Katrina and others tried to get her inside the house. But she didn’t want to leave the puppies alone.
Mary offered to look after the puppies. But nothing got to her head. The sky darkened and Leander returned. Viviana wrapped the puppies in her skirt.
She saw Leander’s shoes in front of her and hugged the puppies close.
"Get in," Leander said. His voice was commanding as if he was annoyed by her.
"I’m staying with the puppies," she said not even looking at him. His feet were standing firm in front of her.
Mary told her that Leanser does not like the fog and would kill it on sight. She didn’t think that Leander would kill the puppies in her embrace. He is not that kind of man.
He sighed. She almost looked at him. It’s been a while since she heard him sigh. She held the puppies to her chest as they wriggled.
"Are you going to suffocate them to death?" he shouted. "Get in!"
Viviana pouted and refused to look at him.
"Aren’t they too young to eat on their own? Stay out and starve them to death then," Leander said and walked away.
It took a minute for Viviana to register what he said.
He never told her not to bring the puppies with her inside the house. He even offered help raising the puppies.
With a relieved smile, she ran inside the house carrying the puppies. She didn’t think it would be this easy to convince him.
Leander sighed in relief seeing her enter the house. When he was told that Leonardo accidentally killed the dog, he feared she would lose it. He feared that she was very sensitive after her miscarriage. At times she made him feel like she knew about her miscarriage.
It might be just a dead dog in the eyes of others. But he knew that his wife wouldn’t think the same. She’d think of it as the merciless killing of a mother leading to the puppies getting orphaned. That would be a much bigger offense in her eyes.
But thankfully she was in good spirits enough to negotiate with him.
If it makes her happy, he will allow dogs inside his house. It doesn’t matter at all.
"I want them getting along with my cats," he said. That was his only condition. He wouldn’t mind anything else. He’s already called for a vet to take a look at the puppies.
Viviana nodded. She can train the puppies. She was surprised Leander agreed to her this easily.
"They don’t look much like their mother," he said. He was told that the bitch was a Rottweiler. The puppies looked mixed.
"I think their father is a Cane Corso," she said.
She didn’t see any male dogs around. "Father dogs won’t care for their puppies," she added.
Leander looked deep in thought. She feared he might leave the puppies out.
"Ah," Leander nodded.
His grandfather won’t like it if he raised Cane Corso dogs in his house.
But then, this is his house that he pays for. He should make the final decisions based on the inhabitants of this house and not on someone who never visits him.
His wife’s feelings trump his grandfather’s feelings. That is how it should be.
Vivana was happy to see the Veterinarian. He gave suggestions for raising very young 4-week-old puppies without their mother. He said it would be tough.
Viviana was up for the task. She was an indirect reason those puppies lost their mother. Now she has Leander’s permission to raise them as pets. She will not ruin this chance.
The vet also said the probability of the runt surviving was very low. He said it would be better to let the runt go out comfortably. Surgeries and medications would not help but hurt the puppy.
Viviana didn’t want to accept that. She too was someone who didn’t have a chance.
But she saw the ain’t who was panting as it lay on the cushion. It looked like even it has given up on living.
She looked at Leander. He patted her back. "Don’t hurt yourself by trying to play God, Minnie," he kissed her forehead.
It was obvious that she wanted to somehow help the runt survive. But not everything is possible.
Viviana nodded. He is right.
Maybe the merciful thing to do for the puppy is to let it die.
