Chapter 267: The Letter

Viviana couldn’t function properly and she found herself to be staring into space at times. She was in no mood to eat and cooking didn’t appeal to her anymore.

In just a week, she has lost her baby—the baby she wanted all her life—and Father Patrick. She felt weighed down and unable to move.

That day passed somehow. She sent Leander away. She was tired of pretending to be fine in front of him. He left as he had a lot to do. She survived the entire day by sleeping.

The next day was Evander’s funeral. It was also the funeral of Father Patrick. He was old and was sick for a long time and so they opted to bury him earlier. Sister Deborah told her that Father Patrick had already laid out his preferences and they followed it to the tee.

Viviana called Lionel. She was worried it was late at night. Leander was not home yet and she wanted to know where Gabriella was.

Lionel was surprised to hear her voice. But he texted her Gabriella’s phone number when she asked him. Viviana wanted to know how their relationship has progressed, but she was not in the mood to talk about it then.

She decided to ask that later.

Gabriella told Viviana that she was already on her way to Abenney. Viviana asked Gabby to light a candle on her behalf. Gabby agreed.

The mood was heavy. Viviana couldn’t talk more and Gabby was not feeling chatty either. They all loved Father Patrick like a father. It was a great loss for them.

Only having that settled did Viviana feel slightly hungry. She called Leander to know when he will be home. She decided to wait for him in case he was already on his way.

"You sound tired," she felt pitiful toward him. "Poor baby..."

"Have you had dinner yet?" Leander asked. "I’m sorry I didn’t call you today. How are you holding up? Does it hurt?"

"I’m fine. I only got hungry now. I called you to see where you are," she told him the truth.

"You go eat first," Leander said. He sounded angry and apologetic. "I should have called you. I was busy I forgot the time..."

"Okay, I will. It’s past dinner time. You eat something too," she said and ended the call.

Lionel picked up the empty beer bottles in front of Leander. He came here in the evening. He’s been sitting on the hotel couch he usually deemed unfit for him as it was supposed to be teeming with bedbugs and human excrement.

For some reason, the couch is deemed fit for the lion today, even more than his comfortable home and his lovely wife. It appears that he plans to sleep on the couch tonight.

"Still not going home?" Lionel asked Leander.

Leander only answered him with a grunt.

"What was in that letter?" Lionel got more curious. Ever since he read that letter, he’s been in a trance.

"What do you think?" Leander passed the letter to Lionel. "Could this be written by Leonardo Vitale? It has sociopath written all over it."

Lionel started at the old folded piece of paper dangling from Leander’s hand. He wondered if it was a trap set by Leander to start a fight with him.

Leander is acting weird. Lionel couldn’t even digest the fact that Leander gave a personal phone to his wife. He even gave his phone number to her.

And now he is offering his personal letter to him?

But curiosity got the better of Lionel and he got the letter.

{My dearest Jophiel,}

The letter started with such an endearing term written with pretty good handwriting. Lionel having previous knowledge of those terms remembering the story Viviana told him, could guess the reason Leander was not pleased with this letter.

This adorable jealous ball!

Lionel continued to read the letter.

{I know you were not happy to share our precious time together with Leander yesterday.}

Lionel’s heart skipped a beat. So, this letter was written so close to the fire? How did this survive the fire? He kept his questions on the back burner and continued reading.

Leona (Michael) wrote about some of the good times they shared together. Most of them involved breaking the rules and going to the forbidden places. The cave they went to recently was mentioned too.

{I will tell you the wish I made to you the day you turn eighteen.}

Leona had written.

{I am going to marry you, dearest Jo. I talked to my mother and she said it is possible. She was crying a lot. I feel bad for her. She wanted me to wait until you turn eighteen. On that day, I will tell you another truth. For now, I will tell you one more truth. I found out who my father is, Jo! I am no longer a bastard. Leander Kastello is my brother. My mother did not confirm it. She refuses to admit it. She says that I am not a Kastello.

I do not want to be a Kastello too. I would rather be Leona Viceroy and stay with you forever.

But I think Lucious Kastello is my father, Jo. Leander has a different mother. But we have the same father. I met my father, Jo. I like him very much. But I don’t like that he shouted at my mother. }

The letter then described how Leona felt at the first meeting with her father.

"You have a sister? I mean, you had a sister?" Lionel asked. Leander stared at him blankly.

But then why did he think it was Leonardo? And wait...

Lionel decided to finish reading the letter.

It appeared that Leona’s first meeting with her father didn’t go as she wished. Her father was mad at her mother for some reason. Her mother tried to keep the reason from Leona, but Leona hid and listened.

"You ruined his life! You raised him as a girl. That’s f*cked up! You will hand him over to me!"

Leona heard his father shout at his mother.

{I should have been devastated hearing that, Jo. I should have been confused. But I couldn’t stop smiling when I heard that. I knew there was something wrong with me. I never thought that I was a girl.

But now I know, Melanie. My sweet, sweet Melony Lemon... Do you see? We can marry now just like you wanted to! I am a boy, and I will grow up to be a man. You will grow up to be a woman, and we can marry, Melanie. We can marry for real!

Oh, but I wanted to keep it a secret from you until you turn eighteen. It’s okay though. You can wait for me, Melanie. Please wait for me...

I am going to leave you for a while.}
