Chapter 263: Addressing The Hard Issues

Viviana looked up sensing the warm hand on her head. Although he donned a serious expression, she saw the kindness in his eyes.

"Why are you crying then, sweetie, if you love him?" he asked.

Viviana gulped.

"When you said you married Leander, I thought you did so with bad intentions..." Father Patrick caressed her hair so gently.

Viviana was stunned.

"You’re not angry at me for falling in love with a Kastello?" she asked.

She didn’t expect Father Patrick would be this indifferent to that important detail. It appears the anger she felt from him earlier was because he thought she might have married Leander Kastello for revenge.

"From what you told me, he is kind to you and loves you. If he chose to marry you, and you fell in love with him, isn’t that good? Why are you crying?" Father Patrick asked.

"He is kind to me," Viviana said. That is an undeniable fact.

"See..." Father Patrick chuckled. "I worried for you and prayed for you every day. Why should I get angry at you for marrying someone you love? It makes no difference when you fall in love. What matters is love in a marriage. Can I reject that your marriage is a divine ordinance by how miraculous everything sounds?"

"Miracle?" Viviana sighed. She bowed her head and wiped the corner of her eyes.

"And, Sweetie, it is a miracle," Father Patrick patted her head. "It must be hard to lose a child, but... Every doctor told you there was no chance for you to even conceive a child. And... here you are..."

Viviana looked up. She thought there was no silver lining to the situation she was in. But Father Patrick is right. There is a silver lining.

If she was able to conceive when there was no chance, then that means, she can carry a child too. It is possible. There were plenty of times when science stood bewildered by miracles. Surely, she can get a miracle too.

"See, you are smiling... This is good," Father Patrick smiled holding her cheek. "About what you did to Evander... You were wrong. Ask for forgiveness. Vengeance is of the Lord, and you took it in your hands..." he sighed.

Viviana didn’t know what to say. At that time, she heard the door handle rattle and she turned to look there. Just by the silhouette of the shadow under the door, she could say it was her husband and he has lost his patience.

"Go, open the door for him," Father Patrick said.

Viviana opened the door for Leander. "Are you okay?" Leander held her cheeks and wiped the corners of her eyes. His heart broke seeing her puffed eyes.

"I’m fine," Viviana smiled.

Considering how heavy her heart was when she entered this room, she now felt the opposite. She felt light. She could see the other side of the sufferings she endured thanks to Father Patrick.

"That’s good," Leander brushed aside the hair hanging on her cheeks. He smiled without knowing too. Oh, how much sensitive is he to her feelings! Even he didn’t know.

"Melanie, go find Sister Deborah and ask her to bring a violin and a tape recorder. I want to record you sing for me," Father Patrick said.

"Now?" Viviana raised her brows.

"Yes, now." Father Patrick’s face held the same kind smile, but this time his eyes looked more focused than ever.

Viviana tried to take Leander with her. She didn’t want Father Patrick to tell Leander that she knows about her miscarriage. But Father Patrick stopped her.

"Come sit, son. Pull up that chair," Father Patrick said.

Leander patted her back and smiled. It was cute to see her worried face.

"Father, I..." She tried to talk to him.

"Go, Sweetie," Father Patrick smiled waving his hand.

Viviana left with a sigh.

Leander walked closer to Father Patrick. Although the doors were old and had a lot of cracks, he couldn’t clearly hear what was spoken inside earlier. This room has weird acoustics.

He pulled the chair and sat facing the old priest.

"You love her," Father Patrick said. It was an observation of the truth he witnessed. He worried if Leander had some ulterior bad motives to marry Viviana considering what she did to his brother.

But however, their wedding happened, their marriage is not lacking love. That made him so happy.

This child never failed to astonish him. He never changed, did he?

"I do," Leander said.

The directness of the priest rattled him a bit. And in that old haggard face, he saw something so obvious and yet veiled. His voice earlier resonated some deep forgotten feeling in his heart—fear.

He is not afraid of the priest; certainly not when he is this fragile and certainly not because he is a man of God.

But the fear was so primal and nostalgic.

Ah, this place... it screws him up. Even the hallways look familiar.

"She told me a lot... She loves and respects you very much and I..." Leander paused to have one more look at the old man in front of him. "I want to thank you for..." He couldn’t even finish him.

There was something to him.

Father Patrick smiled. "The care was mutual..." he rubbed his thigh. "She was always a curious one even when she was frail... Back then I had both my feet and I had some wounds that got very worse. Even some of the nuns here frowned in disgust when they cleaned my wound. But that child, with her beautiful little hands... She never showed any disgust, and she did it better than any nurse or doctor..."

Leander smiled. He remembered how adept she was when she cleaned his wound. So, this is how she got her training. "Her hands have magic," he said.

"She just has love in her heart. I wished for her to become a surgeon. She has the perfect hands. She too was interested. But... His plans were different for her," Father Patrick looked up.

Leander bowed his head. Because his grandfather got involved, her life changed. "She wanted to be a surgeon?" he asked.

It still is possible, right?

"About what my grandfather did..." Leander looked up. It needs to be addressed, right? He is the heir, and shouldn’t he bear his grandfather’s sins?

Father Patrick looked at him with a gentle smile.

"It was a massacre of innocents," Leander said.
