Chapter 223: The Reason She’s Special

Chapter 223: The Reason She’s Special

Peter Kastello was not happy to see Leander not caring about his brother. He even let his wife attack his brother, turning him into a laughingstock among his peers.

Somehow the video of Evander getting brutally hit by a woman circulated everywhere and became a trending topic since no one was trying to stop it. No one knew it was his sister-in-law because the woman’s face was blurred.

Peter Kastello who was not savvy in the matters of the interweb had to be informed by some of his well-wishers about this issue. He had to call for Leander, again. These days Leander only comes to the Rose Garden if only he was forced to be there.

Otherwise, he chooses to stay in Orchid Gardens.

When Peter asked Leander why he isn’t doing what he was supposed to do, Leander only scoffed. "I’m not the underboss anymore," he shrugged. "It’s not my job."

"Who blurred your wife then?" Peter asked banging the table. Leander’s don’t care attitude pissed him off. How much more whipped can a man get?

"It was I," Leander answered. "I must protect my wife." That was the truth.

Even Barnabas looked stunned by Leander’s answer.

Peter was lost for words. He coughed leaning on the table visibly shaken by the attitude of his grandson.

"Evander tried to assault my wife. She stopped him. Should she have allowed him to do whatever to her?" Leander asked. "Grandpa, why am I the one explaining when it was Evander who sinned? Was he questioned?" he asked.

This time he spoke softly trying to appeal to his grandfather’s emotions. Peter did calm down as he said that. Leander saw his grandfather looking so disheartened and felt bad for ruining his peace. But he needed to do this.

Just then, the door opened, and in came his mother. Peter sat in his chair silently. Barnabas waited to see what happens.

"What is he doing here still? That video is still up! People are laughing at him. They are bringing up the past picture of him with his severed...They say that picture was real!" Viola shouted. "You’re still standing here? You’re a monster who doesn’t care for his brother!"

Even if she was worried for her elder son, does that warrant her to act this cruelly to her youngest son? Why can’t he ever see an ounce of love on her face for him? Where is this woman when compared to that woman he tries to protect—the one who would wake up mid-sleep to bind his wounds?

Why should he care for what this woman feels?

"I am the monster?" Leander looked at his mother. Viola walked to him with anger apparent on her face.

Leander didn’t mind that. It would be odd if she accepted him and agreed with him. Her scowl is very familiar to him.

"You set him up!" Viola shouted. "You could have stopped him from entering that restroom when you knew what he was up to. But you didn’t! You let your brother do such a reproachable thing!"

"You agree it was a reproachable thing?" Leander asked putting his hands in his trouser pockets. That was a first for his mother to accept what Evander did as wrong.

Viola opened her mouth to say something, but she couldn’t get the words out of her mouth. She was stunned by her own admission.

"I gave him a choice, mother. He could have left any time he wanted. He was not forced to enter the restroom and he was not forced to say those despicable words to my wife! And he certainly wasn’t forced to try and strip MY wife naked," Leander said.

He couldn’t see where he was wrong. He didn’t want to apologize for something he didn’t do. "He chose his fate when he chose to wield a knife in front of my wife," Leander shrugged.

Viola couldn’t accept it. "My son is struggling for his life in the hospital. The doctors are saying that the effect of his concussion cannot be determined this early. My son...my dear little son...the only remnant I have of my husband..." She walked to Peter.

"Vindicate me, Don Kastello," she kneeled in front of Peter. "How can a woman be allowed to treat a son of Kastello this way?"

As Peter didn’t mind her, she continued. "How can a brother attack his brother using his wife? Ask him to relinquish his position as the heir if he wants to be the husband of that wretched homewrecking whore! Everything went to ruin the moment she stepped into our family..."

"Say that again," Leander grabbed Viola’s hair. "What did you call my wife?" he growled.

The air in the room got heavy. Peter was shocked and stood up. Barnabas ran to Leander but Leander had no flicker in his emotions. He looked calm but Viola only got scared.

Viola squealed in pain holding her head. "It hurts! Stop pulling my hair! Monster!" she shouted.

Barnabas got to Leander and patted Leander’s shoulder. "Let her go... Let your mother go."

Leander let go of Viola. "You go against her, you go against me," Leander said pointing his finger at his mother. But he said those words to every one of them in the room.

He did not think that his grandfather appreciates his wife as much as he should. Although he might not hurt her, he will let others hurt her without taking any action. His talks with his grandfather regarding the Vitale family didn’t give him hope.

With the Vitale family eyeing her, he needs everything to be in order. He cannot take any chances when it comes to the safety of his wife.

"Are you planning on going against the Vitale family?" Peter asked.

"The heir tried to kill me, grandpa. Are you planning on making peace with them? Wouldn’t that make us look weak?" Leander asked.

He always saw his grandfather as his majestic guy who is not afraid of anyone. But he could see fear in his eyes regarding the Vitale family.

Peter pressed his lips. "We can’t seem weak, I agree. We would look weak if we tried to get back at them because a woman got scratched. We are not making it an issue," he said.

Leander could see that it was an order. His grandfather is forbidding him to retaliate against the Vitale family.

"That woman you mention is my wife. And she got "scratched" only because she fell into the bullet to protect me," Leander said. He didn’t think that his argument is going to change his grandfather’s mind. He regretted it immediately after he said it.

"I’m stopping the operations at Venus Point. You’ll hear about it in a couple of days in the news," Leander said and walked out.

He never liked pimping out women. Especially after he learned how Gabriella ended up there, he could not imagine how many women there are in her position. It’s one thing to extort money and kill people for having power. But this is despicable. His family can find ways to earn money by other means.

"You get back right now! Kiss my ring to show your loyalty! Otherwise, I will disown you!" Peter shouted.

Leander did not stop. He did not mind his grandfather’s shouts. Slamming the door shut he walked out in larger gait.

Viola screamed. "I told you he would never come around!" she screeched like a banshee.

Barnabas walked out the door not willing to listen to Viola’s usual rants.

"Why?" Barnabas asked panting. Leander had already reached his car. "I don’t understand. You might lose your position. Your grandfather will give his chair to someone else if you go on this trajectory..."

Leander opened the car door. Although he pretended to not care, Barnabas’ words did make him think. He wondered if it would be terrible to lose his position as the heir.

"Why are you willing to lose everything for one woman?" Barnabas asked. He really thought that Leander had the potential to build the Kastello business to reach new heights.

Is Viola right about Leander? Did they bring in someone unsuitable for the family?

Leander looked at Barnabas. "I am doing a little cleansing, Barnabas" he shrugged. "I’m not giving up on the family." He sat on his seat.

"Will you give her up for the family?" Barnabas asked.

"No," Leander answered. He didn’t have to think about that.

"Why?" Barnabas asked. He had a lot of words he had in mind. But he wanted to understand what Leander wanted.

"Because she promised me to make a cake for my birthday, every year," Leander said. He then locked the door.

Barnabas looked at the car zooming out. He had a feeling Leander would end up this way. That’s why he insisted on Viola being a loving mother to Leander. Boys need the love of a woman. But she failed and that boy grew up looking for love. And when he found someone who could show him even an ounce of attention, he was all in.

Barnabas walked to Peter’s office. Viola was getting dragged out of the room.

"I’ll kill him if something happens to my son!" Viola screamed and kicked her legs. Barnabas’ face twisted in disgust.

Barnabas entered Peter’s room and closed the door.

"We should make sure she doesn’t corrupt him more," Barnabas told Peter.

Peter threw his hands up. "That’s what I’ve been saying all this time!"
