Chapter 105: Last Conversation
Viviana sucked in a deep breath closing her eyes. She slowly released her breath and sat on her knees, making it easier for him to kill her. When she heard him walking to her, she tried to calm her pounding heart. As the cold muzzle of the gun pressed into her forehead, her lips curved into a smile as she had said everything she wanted to say.
But she had something left to say. She had a question actually.
She wanted to know if he remembered her.
Each time she looks into his eyes, she remembered Leona and the time they spent together in the cave that day. Did he really forget Leona? He was so attached to her that day, and he even has the tattoo of...
He does not have the tattoo of Michael but of Jophiel. Why?
But maybe she should die not getting the answer to that question. She did not want his eyes to be the last thing she sees. Maybe she would regret dying then. Her eyes filled with tears. She couldn’t calm down anymore.
Somewhere, she found some attachment to life.
One more hug, maybe... One more kiss...
So, as the muzzle of his gun pressed on her forehead warmed and reached her body temperature with the passage of time, she stayed with her eyes closed. She is human. An unfortunate one at that. Nothing she wishes for will come true. She is meant to die with regrets.
But maybe she is lucky. All her life, she had one or another person who would show her kindness and care. Even in the lair of the lion, she was treated with care by the lion himself.
Her life, on average, was not totally bad.
She didn’t know if one would feel pain as bullets pass through. Kastello would know where to shoot to kill. She trusted him. But when she felt the tremble in the piece of metal on her forehead, she gulped.
"Look at me!"
She heard him say. His voice was hoarse probably because he didn’t speak for a long time.
She opened her eyes and the tears she was holding rolled down her cheeks. She didn’t want to be like this. She didn’t want him to think that she is regretting her decision to die.
She ended up looking at his knees. Her hands were clasped over her thighs and she was still sitting on her knees. She didn’t bother to wipe her eyes.
She pressed her lips as he lifted her chin to face him. The cold metal of the gun was now under her chin. She still couldn’t look at his face. She won’t be able to look at his face even if both of them were standing. She’s short. Her eyes could only reach up to his crotch. She tried not to look there and she looked up. But she could only see his jacket.
She closed her eyes once more as the gun left her chin.
She heard movements and within a few seconds, she felt him in front of her face. She could feel his breathing on her face. She opened her eyes. As she looked into his eyes, once again, her heart started flipping like a fish on dry ground.
Should I ask him?
He said nothing and stared at her. "You have more to say," he said as if that were a fact.
Again, why are his eyes so...sad?
"I killed your parents. The whole plan was mine. It might be my grandpa’s MO, but I learned from him. So, you don’t have to justify sleeping with me by turning me into some "good guy"..." He made air quotes with his fingers still holding the gun. "I am a very bad guy by your books... or is it one book you follow? Thou shalt not kill...?" he smirked.
Viviana said nothing. She averted her eyes.
She had no need to justify sleeping with him. She thought that she made that clear. But if he didn’t like that, then she didn’t want to argue with him.
"Look at me!" he shouted and she turned to face him. "I am a Kastello. I am going to take my family’s side each time. Don’t think that I’m protecting you. I am keeping you alive for another reason..."
"Okay," she nodded.
"You don’t get it, do you?" he pressed the gun to her throat. It made her throat itchy and she held back her cough as she looked at him.
"You are no different from me. You jumped in the same murky sewage as I am when you soiled your pretty little hands with blood. You bear the Kastello name you despise...I made that happen!"
Viviana silently looked at him. He must have been hurt by the hurtful words she used. Honestly, he had no need to be patient with her or care for her. She didn’t know why he did that. But for whatever reason he did it. And now, she made sure he won’t be kind to her. It’s her fault and she was willing to face the music.
And the rest, he is right. She is no different from him. That’s why she wishes for death.
"I know," she said not knowing what else to do.
There was silence for some time. He stared at her as if he was waiting.
"What do you want to ask me?" he asked. The movement of his lips was so mesmerizing she ended up staring.
Leander pressed the gun to her throat harder. Viviana shook her head. "Nothing. I can die not knowing the answer to that question."
Leander scoffed. "Do you want to know why I kept you alive?"
"Well, yeah... that too..." she nodded. She asked about that a lot and she didn’t get any answers from him. Is he going to answer it now?
He was so close to her. His scent was surrounding her and her hands rared to touch his face. But she held back. Her hands were already sweaty and she didn’t want to ruin the current mood.
She thought that it might be hard for him to kill her too. He looked like he was hesitating. He appeared to be passing time by questioning her. Or maybe he wanted answers too.
"What else did you want to ask?" he asked.
"I am not going to ask you," she shook her head.
She did not want to ask him if he remembered her anymore.
"Why?"
"Because..." she took in a deep breath. Her eyes clouded once more. She blinked harder trying to clear her vision. "Because, Leander Kastello... If I ask you that question, you might not want to kill me."
He scoffed. He scoffed and then he chuckled looking at the door as if she told a joke. But when she observed his eyes, there was no mirth, but exasperation.
Why would he get tired trying to pull a trigger, she didn’t know.
Did my words affect him that much? Is Leander Kastello that emotionally weak?
But then she shook that thought out of her head.
She is not that important for him to hold on to her words.
"What question that might be?" he asked an impatient smirk hanging by the corners of his lips.
She shook her head. She truly didn’t want to.
"You’ll be willing to sacrifice young women to keep that secret of yours, little mouse?" he asked leaning closer to her face.
Maybe it was his scent or those restless eyes that never left her eyes that made her act that way. She leaned closer to his lips. She wanted to taste them once more.
"Ha!" he snorted and leaned back. "You are so..."
His eyes turned sharp as he stared right into her soul trying to tread in her deepest trenches of secrets.
"Kill me now, Kastello. If you let me live, I am going to make sure the Kastello family burns," she said.
She knew that she won’t be able to do anything under his watch. She was just trying to provoke him. People tend to give her what she wanted if she really wanted it. She had that ability to talk people into things. She had enough training as an orphan trying to survive.
But Leander is a tough nut to crack. She couldn’t figure out how to navigate around him. Maybe she is mixing up her feelings when it comes to him. That’s why she couldn’t figure him out.
He chuckled, calling out her bluff. "Try, mousy. Try to walk around my cats first." He looked amused. His eyes were alluring when he was laughing in glee. He looked so approachable.
She had nothing more to say. Her best technique was acting pitifully. It makes anyone feel sorry for her. But for some reason, she couldn’t pretend around him.
She smiled. "You got me there."
Seeing her smile, he lost his smile. She couldn’t figure out his thoughts. He sat cross-legged in front of her.
"Don’t smile like that in front of me. It’s so... ugly," he said.
Viviana pressed her lips and nodded her head. He hates her! That’s not surprising. But it hurt.
Time passed. On her knees, she was staring at him. He didn’t like it when she looked away. So she stared at his face.
"Ask me," he said, no, he pleaded.
"Do you not want to kill me?" she asked.
"The question?" he raised his brows.
He placed the gun to his side as if he gave up. Viviana’s eyes ended up on that gun.
