Chapter 407: Nostalgic World
Chapter 407: Nostalgic World
Clyde immediately picked up the black device from the nightstand, its surface cool and smooth like obsidian glass. Without hesitation, he channeled a current of magic into it—just enough to awaken the dormant mechanisms sealed within.
A faint hum resonated through the chamber as the device came to life. Lines of light traced across its edges, forming shifting glyphs, and then clicking sound happened and a hologram burst upward from its core, no larger than the palm of his hand.
Agatha’s face appeared in sharp resolution, her features stern and her eyes intense. She didn’t waste time.
"Clyde," she said, her voice clipped and urgent. "Do you know about the events unfolding across the realms?"
Clyde gave a small nod, his expression calm. "The corruption. Yes, I know about it."
Agatha’s jaw flexed subtly. "Its spreading uncontrollably. It’s broken past containment barriers of their realms, I don’t know how. The Celestials are panicking. The Demons are oddly quiet. And the Angels are unknown. The mosters still in their Selection Stages are in more danger."
Clyde exhaled through his nose. Of course. He had struck the higher beings hard—wounded their pride and disrupted their peace.
They were scrambling, and the corruption had slipped to their minds without them realizing had bad it is.
He was sure that the mortal realms undergoing apocalyptic selection would be affected as well.
Agatha continued, voice low but clear. "We need to meet again. Soon."
"Alright," Clyde replied without hesitation. "Send me the portal coordinates and I’ll come to you."
Agatha gave a single nod, her image flickering for a second before the call ended.
The device went quiet again. Clyde lowered it onto the nightstand, then leaned back into his chair. His gaze was distant, calculating.
Asqa looked at him from where she sat on the bed. "Who was that?"
"A World Master," Clyde said. "Her name is Agatha. She’s the one who offered to cooperate with me. She was the one who overseeing our Selection Stage that time. She’s dangerous, but useful."
Asqa’s eyes narrowed thoughtfully. "Do I need to meet her as well?"
Clyde looked over at her, then nodded. "Yes. Why not? She needs to know who’s standing beside me."
Asqa let out a quiet sigh, then nodded. "Alright. Then I’ll be ready when you are."
Clyde smiled faintly, tired but certain. "Good. We move at first light.
After a few hours of rest and a proper meal, Clyde finally received the portal coordinates from Agatha.
The device buzzed faintly on the nightstand once more, pulsing with light.
Clyde picked it up without a word, reading the glyphs that shifted into navigational instructions.
A portal sigil etched itself into his mind like a whisper of understanding.
He stood up, rolling his shoulders. His coat was ruined from the last battle. So he left it behind without regret.
Now, he wore only a simple black shirt, its sleeves rolled to the elbow, and fitted black trousers. The Elderglass sword hung in its sheath at his waist.
Asqa, on the other hand, still had her coat. She fastened it tightly around her, slinging her wand through the loop at her hip. Her black hair was tied back in a loose tail, her gaze calm.
Clyde raised the black device. It responded instantly to his intent, projecting a pale-blue circle into the air before him.
The portal opened with a faint ripple of displaced air, its surface rippling like water suspended upright.
Clyde glanced at Asqa. "Ready?"
She nodded once.
Without another word, Clyde stepped forward and entered the portal. Asqa followed half a second later, the shimmer swallowing her whole.
The world shifted.
---
They appeared atop a shattered skyscraper.
The wind hit them first. It was dry, hot, filled with the scent of smoke and decay.
The skyline was a chaos of half-collapsed towers and burning wreckage. Overhead, the sky itself is cracking, fissures of void-like blackness webbing through the clouds.
Monsters moved through the air and land alike.
A skeletal dragon with wings of torn sinew and bone, flew across the sky and let out a hollow roar. Behind it, massive carrion birds circled, their feathers ragged and falling, eyes glowing with madness.
A serpentine creature, hundreds of meters long, wound between the buildings. Its scaled hide ruptured in places, revealing raw muscle and twitching nerves.
As it slithered over a building, the concrete cracked and shrieked. People were crushed, eaten, or flung like ragdolls from the rooftops.
Below, the city also dyinng. Fires burned unchecked. Cars were overturned, streets shattered.
Monsters roamed freely—zombies, feral beasts alike. But not all had surrendered.
Here and there, isolated pockets of resistance flashed—civilians and low-tier combatants lashing out with what little magic or skill they had. Fireballs, barriers, and sword slashes lit the streets.
Clyde and Asqa stood in silence.
None of it surprised them anymore. After facing the wrath of Archangels, Demons, and Celestials, this apocalypse was simply another battlefield.
But for the people screaming down below, this was hell made manifest.
They turned to see Agatha standing near the rooftop’s edge, arms crossed, cloak fluttering in the wind. Her gaze was fixed on the horizon.
She turned fully toward them now. Her hair was tied high, her armor slightly scorched.
Asqa took a step forward and looked around. It feels strangely nostalgi. "This is one of the mortal realms still in Selection?"
"Yes." Clyde nodded. "The people here don’t know anything about what’s happening in the higher realms. But that doesn’t matter to them, because they’re already struggling with their own deaths."
Asqa let out a sigh. This was what happened when higher beings held power. Once again, she had to witness these fragile people—who once thought they’d return home to their families—endure this hell.
Her motivation to destroy the higher beings burned even stronger.
"So now there are two of you?" Agatha asked, glancing at Asqa.
"Yeah," Clyde replied curtly. "Long story. I’ll explain what happened—if you promise not to betray us or report us to those higher beings."
Agatha sighed and facepalmed. "I don’t know anything anymore."
