Chapter 347: The Eye Speak
Chapter 347: The Eye Speak
The sensation was overwhelming—so much so that Clyde could no longer stand, move, or even blink without immense difficulty.
This creature... this entity... was beyond human comprehension.
This was not something he was ever meant to see.
Yet, here he was — because he had wanted this. Because he had called upon the creature, and in a rather rude manner at that.
Now, what was he supposed to do?
Clyde’s mind was in turmoil.
Pushing aside his panic, he forced himself to focus and calm down. He knew that panic was the root of failure — and death — in any dangerous situation. If he wanted to survive, he needed to regain control.
But it was nearly impossible under the weight of the entity’s gaze, which bore down on him like an inescapable force.
Could he even use his powers here?
No — there was no point in wondering. He had to try.
Clyde attempted to activate his [Pure Lightning] skill, but nothing happened. There was no familiar surge of power, no energy coursing through him as it normally would.
He let out a frustrated sigh.
So that was it — he couldn’t even use his abilities here. Right now, he was completely at the mercy of this creature.
Gritting his teeth, he forced his body to move, pushing against the crushing weight pressing down on him. Slowly, painfully, he struggled to his feet, every muscle screaming in protest.
At last, after an exhausting effort, he stood. He lifted his head and locked eyes with the massive, all-seeing gaze before him.
"Hey, I didn’t mean to be rude," Clyde said through clenched teeth, fighting against the overwhelming pressure. "I just... argh... I just want answers."
The enormous eye blinked — its movement slow, deliberate.
For a brief moment, as the eye closed, the suffocating pressure vanished, and Clyde felt a relief so profound it was like finding water after wandering in a desert for days.
But then the eye opened again, and the crushing force returned.
"You seek... answers...? And yet... you can barely... stand..."
The voice resonated directly inside Clyde’s head, echoing through his very being.
Translation:
"I know that..." Clyde gritted his teeth. "But can’t you... ugh... just lower your presence?"
The pressure suddenly mounted again, and Clyde collapsed to the ground once more.
"Did you just... say that I should lower my presence... to match you...?"
Clyde gulped. His chaotic mind hadn’t processed his words properly before speaking. He had just ordered an ancient, unknown, godlike entity—one with power beyond comprehension—to lower its presence.
It was frustration that made him say it. But now, he realized how foolish that was. Fortunately, the entity didn’t smite him on the spot, or he would have ended up as part of these black ashes. This being wasn’t something he could fight like the Angels, Celestials, or Demons.
"I’m... sorry," Clyde said.
The massive, slitted eye blinked again. Clyde decided it wasn’t worth trying to stand up.
"Use the medallion..."
Clyde’s eyes widened. The medallion.
The anomaly—an extension of this entity—had told him to retrieve the artifact from the burning realm that Asmodeus had reduced to ash. That meant there had to be something he could do with it.
Focusing his mind—the only thing he could rely on in this realm—he attempted to summon the medallion from the physical world into his palm. It took far more effort than usual, as he had to endure the entity’s crushing presence at the same time.
His body trembled violently, blood trickling from his mouth and nose, but Clyde kept his focus. He couldn’t afford to fail.
After what felt like an eternity of excruciating effort, he finally managed to manifest the medallion in his palm. The moment it appeared, the oppressive force pressing down on him weakened significantly.
"Phew..." He let out a long breath of relief. Finally, after all this time, he could breathe properly again.
"Good..." the creature said. "Now, at least, you should be able to stand."
And indeed, Clyde stood up with ease.
"Now tell me—what is actually happening? Why did you choose me? And what is it that you want?" Clyde asked.
"I... only want... to awaken..."
Awaken? So the creature had been in a deep slumber for a long time. But that wasn’t the most important thing right now.
"Then why did you choose me? Was it just a coincidence?"
"You were chosen... from the very beginning... when all of this started. Not by... me... but by the Codex..."
"Codex?" Clyde frowned.
"The power you wield now... the one that dictates your condition and your abilities..."
Clyde thought for a moment, his frown deepening. Then, realization struck.
"You mean... my System?"
He recalled how Agatha once told him that the System’s design didn’t originate from them — they had merely taken it from some unknown source.
So this was where the System came from.
The entity didn’t respond. Perhaps it didn’t care what Clyde called the power.
"Why did you choose me?" Clyde asked again.
"The Codex deemed you... a perfect vessel... one that would bring about my return... You have no family... no ambition... and you view life through a nihilistic lens... The Codex believed that you would not be bound... by moral choices or societal structures..."
"So basically, you wanted someone empty, someone who wouldn’t resist you when you finally awaken?" Clyde asked.
"Yes."
Clyde sighed. What he heard wasn’t entirely wrong. He wasn’t someone with a firm moral compass, nor did he live by any particular ideals. But that didn’t mean he was just a cold-blooded killer, either. He still cared about the people in Sivagadh Fortress, those who were merely trying to survive after their lives were stolen by the higher beings.
"If you truly awaken," Clyde said, "what will happen to the world as it is now?"
"It will be destroyed... of course..."
The answer came so easily, as if it were simply a fact. Clyde wasn’t sure what to do.
"Because you will be the Catalyst of this destruction... you may choose who you wish to bring with you to survive..."
Clyde looked up at the massive eye, his eyes widening.
This was... unexpected.
