Chapter 279: The Creature’s Death

His Elderglass Sword pulsed brighter. He channeled his magic power and skill then golden fire blazing along its edge. With a sharp swing, he unleashed another arc of searing golden fire, the slash cutting through the air with a roar.

BOOM!

The blazing arc slammed into the creature once more. It raised its grotesque limbs in defense and forming another barrier of black and red veiny flesh. The fire collided with the barrier and a deafening explosion lighting up the dark cloud.

Clyde gritted his teeth and poured more of his magic power into the flames, feeding their intensity. The golden fire burned hotter at the flesh and eating away at the writhing tissue.

Smoke and the sickening stench of burning flesh filled the air, but the creature wasn’t dead.

Clyde then activated [Pure Lightning], his body instantly enveloped in tendrils of white and blue lightning.

The energy crackled and surged around him, sending sharp electric bursts into the surrounding air. He moved toward the creature. His movements became a blur of white and blue light.

With a flash, Clyde closed the distance. He slashed Elderglass Sword down and severing a writhing tendril that had moved to intercept him. Sparks of lightning flew around as the blade that now charged with lightning carved through the grotesque mass.

The creature let out a screech, but Clyde didn’t stop. His attack came faster now, each slash guided by the lightning coursing through his body.

He moving around the creature, slashing at the coiling limbs and writhing tendrils that surrounded its grotesque main form.

Golden fire and electric sparks illuminated the dark sky as Clyde continued his attack. His blade danced in his hands.

His slashes tore through the creature’s defenses leaving charred and severed pieces of its grotesque mass falling to the ground below.

The creature writhed violently, its dozen faces contorting in what seemed like pain or rage. Blood-red tears flowed freely now, dropping to the ground below as its run out of limbs for defense.

Clyde pressed his advantage. He was too fast to be cought by those tendrils and limbs now. Lightning tendrils sparking wildly around him as he finally able to drove his blade deep into the creature’s core.

The creature let out another deafening unnatural screech, its pulsing body convulsing violently. Then, from deep within its grotesque mass, a burst of dark energy erupted, forcing Clyde to leap back.

Hovering in the air, Clyde observed the entity. Its form had begun to crack and fissure. Black ichor spilling from within its writhing mass.

Clyde preparing for another strike, his sword blazing once again with golden fire and crackling lightning.

The creature’s many faces turned toward him with their wide and unblinking red eyes. Then, it spoke again.

"You... will... shape... the... end..."

Before Clyde could respond, the creature’s form imploded in a brilliant flash of black and red light, leaving behind only a smoldering, empty void.

Clyde hovered in silence. His mind now filled with with more questions.

What had it meant by his choices shaping the end? And why did it seem so familiar with him, as if it knew something he didn’t?

He descended slowly to the ground, the oppressive energy lingering in the air start to dissipate and the monsters on the ground dying one by one.

The battlefield on the ground had gone eerily silent except for the sound of bodies hitting the ground.

Samuel and Leyan stood amidst the corpses of slain monsters. They looked around in confusion as the remaining creatures collapsed.

"What just happened?" Leyan muttered.

Samuel wiped the blood from his forehead with the back of his hand. "No idea. It’s like something just turned them off."

Their gazes snapped upward as Clyde descended from the sky and landing amidst the corpses. His Elderglass Sword still shimmered faintly with golden fire and lightning but the energy was beginning to dissipate.

Samuel rushing toward him. "What the hell just happened up there?"

Leyan followed close behind, his eyes scanned Clyde’s injury.

Clyde sheathed his sword with grim expression. "It’s done. I killed uhh, something."

"Something?" Samuel asked with brows furrowing. "You’re going to have to be more specific."

Clyde sighed heavily "It wasn’t like any monsters I’ve fight before. A monstrous being, human faces, dozens of them, all twisted and crying blood. It had limbs and tendrils everywhere, and its eyes all red but looks like human eyes."

Samuel and Leyan exchanged horrified looks. Leyan shuddered. His face pale. "So, that thing was the source of all these monsters?"

"I think so," Clyde said. "When I killed it, the creatures started dropping like flies, right? It was controlling them somehow."

Samuel rubbed the back of his neck, and said, "We saw the explosion and the light and energy tearing through the clouds. So the thing was strong?"

Clyde nodded. "It certainly wasn’t easy, but I got it done."

Samuel nodded. "So? Did it leave behind anything? A clue? Or reward?"

Clyde shook his head, his expression darkening. "Nothing. I can only see red and black flesh after I killed it."

Samuel and Leyan nodded, though unease flickered across their faces.

"So, maybe it was for nothing," Samuel said after a moment with frustration. "All of this just a bunch of dead monsters and no real thing."

Clyde shook his head. "No. It wasn’t for nothing. The creature had said something strange, or actually just trying to say something. I think there’s a bigger purpose for its presence here."

Leyan’s head snapped up and looking at Clyde. "What do you mean? What did it say?"

Clyde didn’t plan to reveal everything. The creature’s words lingered in his mind.

"I didn’t fully understand it," Clyde finally said. "But I have a feeling that its important.

Samuel frowned. "Like what?"

"I don’t know," Clyde admitted. "But I feel like this isn’t the end. We need to keep looking in other Ruins."

"You’re probably right. It’s not like we can just walk away and ignore this," Samuel said after few seconds.

"We can’t afford to let it catch us off guard. We need to keep searching," Clyde said.

Leyan nodded hesitantly. "Then we’d better start making this out project next."

"Yeah," Samuel said.

Samuel opened the portal back to the Fortress and they all vanished from that Ruin.
