Chapter 277: Flying
Chapter 277: Flying
Samuel and Leyan stood few meterrs away from the devastation Clyde had unleashed. Their expressions was a mix of shock but also understanding.
They had long accepted that Clyde was the strongest among them, even though he was the youngest. There was something about him that makes him so different.
He was an anomaly, and over the past few months they had witnessed his power growing exponentially more. The reason for his strength remained a mystery that Clyde refused to share. Over time, they had learned not to ask.
They suspected that it have something to do with his Private Attribute on his System. But they didn’t know that they are.
The air was thick with the acrid stench of burned flesh and the ground was charred and cracked, a testament to the inferno Clyde had summoned.
Ash floated like morbid snowflakes and settling over the remnants of the creatures that he had burned.
Despite the lingering heat of the scorched earth, both Samuel and Leyan found their gazes drawn upward following Clyde’s unwavering stare.
There, in the swirling darkness above, they finally saw it as well. The dark and red clouds pulsed and shifted unnaturally, parting just enough to reveal something within, it was a massive writhing form that seemed alive.
The thing pulsed like a grotesque heartbeat.
"What is that?" Leyan said of awe and fear.
"Probably the source of this anomaly," Samuel replied, his eyes narrowing. "Clyde’s already figured that out. Let’s see what he plans to do."
Clyde turned to face them with calm expression.
"I’m going up there to check it out. Can you two hold this position?" he asked.
Samuel and Leyan exchanged a glance. Though the ruined landscape around them still teemed with creatures clawing their way out of the shadows, they nodded.
"We can manage," Samuel said firmly with his spear ready.
Clyde nodded in acknowledgment, his gaze lingering on them for a brief moment. Then, without another word, he bent his knees, channeling energy into his legs. Then he kicked off the ground and launching himself upward.
The air rippled with the force of his ascent and in an instant, he disappeared into the roiling clouds above.
Samuel tightened his grip on his spear, watching the sky where Clyde had vanished, then at Leyan. "Let’s stay alive here."
The two braced themselves as more creatures emerged from the shadows.
---
Clyde shot into the air. His Elderglass Sword glowed faintly, trailing streaks of light as he keep going up.
The black and red clouds above churned as if sensing his approach. The oppressive weight of the anomaly grew heavier with each passing moment.
Below, Samuel and Leyan readied themselves. The monsters continued to emerge from the shadows.
"Stay sharp!" Samuel said, spinning his spear in a defensive arc as another wave of creatures advanced.
"Yeah. Sure," Leyan muttered, loosing another enchanted arrow. It sailed through the air and striking a beast in its twisted maw before exploding in a burst of radiant light. "These things don’t stop. How many more could there possibly be?"
"I think they will come as many as this damned anomaly can spawn," Samuel replied grimly. He lunged forward and using his spear to pierce through two creatures in a single motion. "Focus on staying alive first for now."
Leyan grunted in acknowledgment, firing another arrow that detonated in mid-air, scattering a cluster of creatures.
The two fought side by side. Yet the unending waves of monsters made it clear this was not a fight they could win indefinitely. They were buying time, nothing more.
---
Clyde soared higher, the air around him growing colder and denser as he approached the pulsating mass within the swirling clouds. Thankfully, he had gained a skill called [Flight] few months ago that made him able to fly.
The red veins coursing through the anomaly writhing and converging around the shape at its center.
As he drew closer, Clyde’s eyes caught glimpses of the entity. It was huge, far larger than he had anticipated and its form was unlike anything he had ever saw.
It was a shifting amalgamation of flesh and shadow, its surface pulsed with energy veins and beat like a heart pumping lifeblood.
"What the hell are you?" Clyde thought, his grip tightening on the Elderglass Sword.
His [Burning Hand] skill still crackled faintly at his fingertips, the celestial energy within him resonating with the anomaly’s dark power.
The entity seemed to sense his presence. A deep sound echoed from within it, a noise that was less a roar and more a vibration that shook the air and rattled Clyde’s bones.
The clouds around the anomaly swirled faster, and tendrils of dark energy lashed out toward him, seeking to drag him.
Clyde twisted mid-air narrowly avoiding the first tendril as it sliced past him. Another came from above, but he slashed at it with his sword, the Elderglass blade cutting through the energy like butter.
The severed tendril dissolved into black mist, but more took its place, reaching for him relentlessly.
He dodged and weaved with quick and fluid move, but the sheer number of tendrils made it impossible to avoid them all. One wrapped around his ankle from above and yanking him downward with incredible force.
Clyde gritted his teeth. Then raising his free hand and unleashing another wave of fire. The golden flames roared and incinerating the tendril and freeing him.
He didn’t stop. The anomaly was trying to keep him far away. He surged forward, slashing through the writhing energy.
The Elderglass Sword glowed brighter, reacting to his magic power, its light cutting through the dark and red cloud around him.
As he reached the core of the anomaly, the entity fully revealed itself. It was grotesque mass of shifting faces and limbs that twisted together in a horrifying sight of pain and suffering.
Its glowing veins pulsed violently, the energy within it unstable and volatile.
Clyde raised his sword, the celestial energy within him surging to its peak. Thenhe swung with all his might, unleashing a devastating arc of golden fire that streaked toward the entity’s core.
