Chapter 488: Chapter 488: The Past

By then, the surgery had ended, and the doctor was explaining the situation to Chu Shuo. Seeing Chi Yue, Chu Shuo waved her over.

Chi Yue didn’t speak; she just stood by and listened as the doctor described how risky the surgery had been, but fortunately, they had managed to save him in the end.

Fu Rongyin still needed to stay in the intensive care unit for observation, and under Chu Shuo’s direction, he was placed in a private room.

After everything was settled, Chu Shuo finally turned to Chi Yue.

"The operation went smoothly, he should wake up after the anesthesia wears off, but he still needs to be observed. I’ll arrange for someone to watch over him here. If you’re worried, you can stay here and take care of him yourself, and leave Mianmian to me."

Chi Yue shifted her gaze from Fu Rongyin, saying, "Thank you."

Chi Yue brought Fu Mianmian back home, made arrangements for what was to come, and then went to her room to pack some clean clothes.

She caught a glimpse of a box she had hidden at the bottom of her wardrobe, and her expression paused momentarily.

After Chi Jianshan had given her the items, she hadn’t opened it yet.

It wasn’t that she didn’t want to open it; she just hadn’t mentally prepared herself.

After hesitating for a moment, she opened it anyway.

There weren’t many things inside the box, but each one could bring back a flood of memories.

Chi Yue picked out a velvet box and tucked it into her bag, bringing it with her to the hospital.

Fu Rongyin still hadn’t awakened, lying in the sterile room, so Chi Yue watched over him through the window.

In her hand, she held the velvet box, and her eyebrows softened with tenderness.

This was the graduation gift she had prepared for Fu Rongyin.

After the college entrance exam had ended, they had planned to climb a mountain together, but it had started raining halfway up, forcing them to return to the base of the mountain.

The rain didn’t stop, and as it grew dark, Fu Rongyin suggested staying in a hotel. Chi Yue hesitated for a long time before agreeing.

It wasn’t until they arrived at the hotel that they realized it was fully booked, save for one room remaining. Fu Rongyin decisively took the room and, holding Chi Yue who was looking down the whole time, they went to their room.

In silent agreement, neither of them spoke. After showering and drying their hair, they lay on opposite sides of the bed, with a gulf as wide as rivers and mountains between them.

In the end, it was Chi Yue who broke the silence.

"This, isn’t this a bit inappropriate?"

"What’s inappropriate about it?"

Chi Yue turned over, only to find that Fu Rongyin was lying facing her, watching her back for who knows how long.

The fact was, they had only confirmed their relationship a few days prior, and though he had expressed his feelings for her numerous times at school, she had never accepted them, despite skipping classes and appearing everywhere together, she simply refused to give him that official status.

The two of them ended up together somehow, Chi Yue, having never encountered such a situation before, was so startled she lost her voice.

At the last moment, blushing, she pushed him away, "Not now. It’s too soon."

Chi Yue still remembered the crestfallen look on Fu Rongyin’s face.

Finally, from her bag, she brought out the velvet box and handed it to him, "This is my commitment gift to you, happy graduation, boyfriend."

At the time, Fu Rongyin had set the box aside with a dark expression, but when Chi Yue woke up, she saw the ring on his finger and realized the tender heart behind Fu Rongyin’s harsh words.

But later...

"Chi Yue."

An abrupt voice drew Chi Yue out of her reverie; she turned around to meet Lu Nanxi’s angry gaze.

Lu Nanxi glanced into the room before quickly averting her eyes and scoffed coldly, "You really don’t care whether Fu Rongyin lives or dies, letting him have surgery at such a critical time."

Chi Yue collected herself, her attitude frosty, "This is a matter between us as a couple, it’s not your place as an outsider to criticize."

"A couple?" Lu Nanxi dropped her usually composed demeanor and sneered, "I’m afraid you just dare to spread these lies because Fu Rongyin hasn’t woken up yet. Moreover, we share the same father, so I’m hardly an outsider."

Chi Yue stared at her for a long while, making Lu Nanxi’s skin crawl, until she couldn’t help but burst out in anger, "What are you staring at me for?"

"Just wondering how your skin has grown so much thicker than most people’s."
