Chapter 486: Chapter 486: How Can She Possibly Keep Her Heart Unmoved
Yolanda was startled by Adam Sterling’s gaze and instinctively took a step back, "Adam, calm down!"
"Why did you go ahead and do these things on your own?" Adam threw the test report in Yolanda’s face, "Didn’t I tell you not to mention Adrian Sterling’s name to me? Did you take that as a joke?"
The sharp paper cut Yolanda’s face, and she looked at Adam in disbelief. "Yes, I took it as a joke. I can’t just ignore it."
She struggled to hold back the urge to cry, "I don’t want to feel indebted to Cooper Coldson because of this. Didn’t you hope we would have nothing more to do with him?"
Adam glared without saying a word.
"I also don’t want Ella and I to be constantly on edge, not knowing when an old man might show up claiming to be dad or grandpa and doing whatever he wants to us. I don’t want that!"
She yelled at Adam, "You keep saying you love me and Ella, but what happened? You know how dangerous Adrian Sterling is, yet you only care about hiding yourself. Did you ever think about us, even for a moment?"
"Don’t push me, don’t push me." Adam’s emotions showed signs of breaking down, and he pounded his head with his fists, "I’m useless, don’t push me, don’t push me."
"Adam!" Yolanda noticed something was wrong with him and tried to grab his hands to stop him from hurting himself, but Adam shoved her away.
"Don’t push me, don’t push me!" Adam ran back to his room like a madman and locked the door.
Yolanda stood alone in the living room for a long time before finally coming to her senses and collapsing onto the sofa.
What should she do?
What should she do?
She carefully recalled Adam’s reaction just now, which was absolutely abnormal. What was going on?
Suddenly, Yolanda thought of someone, Adam’s teacher Professor Serena Seward. Professor Seward had given her a business card before leaving.
Thinking about it now, Yolanda felt that Professor Seward might know something. She quickly got up and went to the bedroom to find the business card.
At this moment, she didn’t know if Serena was in the country or abroad, nor if calling would disturb her.
She thought about it and decided to send a message, [Hello, Professor Seward, I am Adam’s...]
Yolanda typed the word "wife", but it felt inappropriate. She quickly deleted it and retyped, [Hello, Professor Seward, I am Yolanda. We met when Adam opened the counseling room, and you gave me a business card. I would like to speak with you about something important, please call back when you’re available!]
She waited until one o’clock, but Serena did not return her call, so she had to go to bed first.
The next morning, the phone call came.
"Is this Yolanda? I remember you, you’re Little Sterling’s spouse." Serena’s voice was very soft when she spoke, "I had gone to bed last night. Is there something urgent?"
"Professor Seward, it is urgent, actually it’s about..." For a moment, Yolanda didn’t know how to express herself.
"Is it about Adam?" Serena asked tentatively.
"Yes, related to Adam." Yolanda was more convinced of her hunch that Serena might know something. "Professor, Adam has been a bit off lately, if it’s convenient..."
"Yolanda, don’t worry. I happen to be in the country and will book a flight over right away." To her surprise, Serena agreed very readily.
Yolanda let out a sigh of relief. As she left the room, she saw that Adam was still there.
She thought for a moment but didn’t know what to say to him.
The two sat in silence together for breakfast, and Adam cleaned up the dishes, "I’ll be going to the counseling room then."
"Adam, I’ve contacted Professor Serena!" Yolanda said while observing Adam’s reaction. Seeing he didn’t oppose strongly, she continued, "She should be coming today. I want her to stay at our place, in my dad’s old room. Is that alright?"
Adam was silent for a while before saying three words, "Do as you wish."
Yolanda relaxed, sensing that Adam might also want Serena to come.
She tidied up, preparing to pick Serena up from the airport in the afternoon.
Around noon, Cooper Coldson called, saying he had discovered something and wanted to discuss it in person.
"Okay, I’m about to go out. See you soon." They arranged a meeting place, and Yolanda quickly headed out.
Cooper was already waiting there and waved at her, "Over here!"
"Did you come early?" Yolanda sat down, aware that it seemed Cooper was always the one to arrive early whenever they met.
"Just got here!" Cooper smiled slightly, but his expression was somewhat serious.
Yolanda couldn’t help but feel nervous, "What did you find out?"
"I asked about Adrian Sterling’s situation these past few days and also sent someone to his hometown to visit some neighbors," Cooper paused before continuing, "When Adam was little, he was probably often beaten and scolded by Adrian."
As expected!
Yolanda’s mind was a mixture of emotions, "It’s probably not just ordinary beatings, judging by how scared Adam is of Adrian..."
Cooper nodded, "It’s said Adam was sent to the hospital several times after being beaten, and his mother... didn’t escape either."
"His mother?" Yolanda glimpsed a sliver of hope, "Is Adam’s mother still in the hometown?"
Cooper shook his head, "She’s dead."
"Dead?" Yolanda had a bad premonition.
"According to neighbors and villagers, the last time they saw Adam’s family was the day Adrian got drunk again, severely beat Adam and his mom. After that, Adam disappeared, and a few days later, Adam’s mom was dead."
Yolanda couldn’t believe it, covering her mouth, "Could it be... was Adam’s mom beaten to death by Adrian?"
"No one knows, no one knows." Cooper sighed, "Adam’s mom had no one to rely on. She was supposedly a trafficked woman brought to the Sterling family. Whether she lived or died... who would care about her?"
Yolanda could scarcely accept any of this. Adam had never mentioned these things, not a word.
She had asked Adam where his family was, and Adam only said they were in the hometown and it was inconvenient to go back, but she never expected... it would be like this.
Did Adam know his mom was already gone? Was his mom really beaten to death by Adrian?
Yolanda couldn’t imagine.
The two sat silently for a while before Cooper, concerned, spoke up, "Yolanda, if you want to continue living with Adam, I can handle Adrian Sterling’s issue."
Yolanda looked at him. What did he mean by handling? Making Adrian disappear forever?
"Don’t worry. Adrian has committed grave sins. Whether imprisoning him or killing him," Cooper’s eyes were cold, "It’s what he deserves."
"Cooper, you don’t have to go to such lengths for me." Yolanda looked at the man before her, feeling he was so unfamiliar yet so familiar.
Melissa Greenwood and the others’ words kept reminding her not to fall for him again, but how could she not be moved?
