Chapter 325: Chapter 325: Will You Marry Melissa Greenwood?
The next day, Yolanda woke up early and got ready to head out.
"Yolanda, are you sure you don’t want me to go with you?" Lola Gold asked again.
"No need, you stay home with Ella." Yolanda bid farewell to Little Ella. "Ella, Mommy is going out and will be back soon."
Lola escorted her to the door and said helplessly, "Good luck. May your divorce go through successfully."
Yolanda waved her hand and left quickly.
For some reason, this time, she felt particularly calm, as if she were just stepping out to buy groceries.
When she arrived at the courthouse, there were still nearly twenty minutes before the hearing. She didn’t expect to see Cooper Coldson already there.
Cooper was sitting alone on one of the chairs in the hallway. When he saw her, he stood up and called out, "Over here."
Yolanda paused for a moment, then pulled a faint smile and walked over with a few quick steps.
"Sit for a while," Cooper said with an unprecedentedly polite tone.
Yolanda nodded and sat down a short distance away from Cooper—neither too close nor too far.
"Did you bring everything with you?" Cooper asked in a quiet voice, not looking at her.
"Yes." Yolanda responded softly.
"Good." Cooper said nothing more.
The two sat in silence.
They were the second couple scheduled for a divorce hearing that day. At that moment, another couple was already inside.
Not long after Yolanda sat down, loud arguing began to erupt from within—
The wife yelled at the husband for being heartless and stingy, while the husband accused her of being greedy and old...
"How’s Ella doing recently?" Cooper spoke up again, seemingly annoyed by the quarrels inside.
"She’s doing well. She’s gained quite a bit of weight these past few days. Every day, she clings to me and insists that I carry her." When it came to her daughter, Yolanda couldn’t help but talk more, with a smile lighting up her face.
She turned to ask, "And Gabriel? Has he thrown any tantrums?"
Cooper shook his head. "The day after Ella left, he pitched quite a fit. My mom felt so bad her eyes were brimming with tears."
He chuckled softly. "But overall, the kids are very sensible."
Another stretch of silence followed.
Inside, the quarreling had faded away, replaced by the sound of a woman sobbing.
Soon, the courtroom door opened.
Yolanda and Cooper both stood up, their faces betraying a brief moment of awkwardness.
The couple inside exited quickly. The husband and his family stormed out angrily, cursing under their breath, while the wife led her child—a teenager—trying to console her sobbing.
Yolanda and Cooper’s gazes followed them until Liam Dawson walked out.
"You’re both here?" Liam’s voice carried audible surprise. She had assumed that Cooper, once again, wouldn’t show up this time.
Both of them turned their heads simultaneously to look at Liam.
"Come in," Liam said, turning around and walking inside. Her expression looked visibly tired. "Did you bring all the necessary documents?"
"Yes." The two responded in unison.
Liam confirmed again, "The custody arrangements and the division of assets—you’ve already reached an agreement, correct?"
She massaged her temples, clearly unwilling to listen to more arguments.
"My son stays with his father, and my daughter stays with me," Yolanda replied immediately. "I don’t want any of the assets."
Liam frowned. "Hm? But didn’t Cooper tell me something different over the phone earlier?"
"What?" Yolanda tensed up, wanting to ask for clarification, but Liam motioned for her to stop.
"Forget it. Let’s follow the procedures." Liam returned to her seat as the judge and began discussing matters with her colleagues.
Yolanda felt uneasy. She didn’t know what Cooper had told Liam, so she subconsciously glanced at him.
"Don’t worry, I won’t take Ella away from you," Cooper said, as if he’d guessed her concern.
Only then did Yolanda relax, but she still remained curious about what Cooper had said to Liam.
After waiting another ten minutes, the hearing finally began. The entire process went very smoothly, as if the two had it all worked out in advance. There wasn’t even the slightest argument.
One of the jurors beside Liam couldn’t help but shake his head and mumble, "If these two have already agreed, why come to court for a contested divorce? Why not just file for an uncontested one?"
Indeed, most divorce cases that end up in court have irreconcilable differences and lead to shouting matches that turn everything upside down.
No matter how deeply in love they once were, at that moment, they all see the ugliest sides of each other.
Before long, Liam delivered the final ruling: "Regarding the divorce proceedings between the plaintiff, Yolanda Greenwood, and the defendant, Cooper Coldson, this court officially declares the divorce granted. Of their children, the son Gabriel Coldson will be in the custody of the defendant, Cooper Coldson, while the daughter Ella Greenwood will be in the custody of the plaintiff, Yolanda Greenwood. Additionally, the defendant, Cooper Coldson, shall provide a one-time payment of five hundred million as child support. Both parties have no objections regarding the division of property. This ruling is effective immediately and will be executed without delay!"
Five hundred million in child support?
Yolanda stared at Cooper in shock and whispered, "I don’t want the money."
"It’s for Ella," Cooper murmured, lowering his head as he pulled at the corners of his lips. In a voice so soft, it seemed almost inaudible, he added, "I’m sorry."
Yolanda was stunned. She didn’t understand what Cooper meant. At this point, their failed marriage was no longer just his fault.
Neither needed to apologize to the other.
After the staff gave them further instructions, the two went to collect their divorce certificates. And with that, everything was officially over.
As they walked out of the office and reached the courthouse door, neither of them spoke.
Once outside, Cooper let out a deep sigh. "We’re free now."
He chuckled lightly and turned to Yolanda with a smile. "So, what’s your plan now that you’ve got the papers?"
"I don’t know. For now, I just want to raise Ella well," Yolanda said honestly. For far too long, she had been someone with a simple mind, unable to think far ahead.
Before this, all she’d cared about was securing the divorce certificate. Now that she had it, she suddenly found herself at a loss for what came next.
"That’s good." Cooper hesitated for a moment. He seemed like he wanted to ask about her and Noah Coldson but ultimately swallowed his words. "Take care of yourself and Ella."
He turned and started to leave first.
"Wait a moment!" Yolanda couldn’t help but call out to him.
Cooper turned back to look at her.
"Are you going to marry Melissa Greenwood?" Yolanda tightened her grip on the green booklet in her hands.
Cooper lowered his gaze slightly and instead asked her a question, "Do you care?"
Yolanda didn’t respond.
Cooper continued, "If you tell me you don’t want me to marry Melissa, then I won’t!"
Yolanda’s eyes widened in surprise. She never expected to hear such an answer from Cooper.
But now that she and Cooper were divorced, she had neither the right nor the reason to take a stance on this matter.
"Whether I care doesn’t matter," she said slowly. "Cooper, I just want to remind you—sometimes what you see isn’t the truth. It might just be the truth you’re willing to believe."
Cooper frowned slightly. "What are you trying to say?"
"Nothing." Yolanda shook her head. Little May was still under Melissa’s care, and she couldn’t reveal the truth about Melissa.
At least, not yet.
However, Cooper’s next words left Yolanda completely astonished.
