Chapter 314 Yolanda, Are You Out of Your Mind?
Chapter 314: Chapter 314 Yolanda, Are You Out of Your Mind?
Yolanda entered the hospital room with a skeptical expression, Lola following closely behind her.
On the hospital bed, Jaxon Greenwood’s external injuries had long healed. At this moment, he was gazing out the window. Hearing someone enter, he finally turned his head.
"Dad!" Yolanda choked up the moment she spoke, "You finally woke up?"
Confusion flickered in Jaxon Greenwood’s eyes. He glanced at Yolanda, then at the person behind her. "Who... are you looking for?"
Yolanda felt her heart tighten sharply. She grabbed Jaxon Greenwood’s hand. "Dad, it’s me, Yolanda, it’s Yolanda!"
Jaxon Greenwood began to struggle. "Let go of me, I don’t know you!"
He shouted toward the hallway outside, "Melissa, come quickly! Daddy’s scared—who are these people?"
Yolanda’s legs buckled as if she was about to collapse.
"Yolanda, are you okay?" Lola quickly grabbed Yolanda, her voice trembling, "Yolanda, Uncle Greenwood seems to not recognize us anymore."
"It’s not ’seems,’ he really doesn’t." Melissa Greenwood’s voice came from behind them.
She leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, unmoved by Jaxon Greenwood’s plea for help. "The doctor said you... may have Alzheimer’s disease."
She let out a dismissive chuckle. "It’s basically dementia, and it’s already quite severe."
"How could this happen?" Yolanda held her mouth, hardly believing, gazing heartbreakingly at Jaxon Greenwood, who was still struggling. "Dad, look at me carefully. It’s me, I’m your daughter Yolanda."
"Let go of me, let go of me." Jaxon Greenwood continued to plead with Melissa. "Melissa, please save me."
Yolanda’s tears streamed down uncontrollably.
Time was when Jaxon Greenwood, though in his fifties, maintained himself so well—he appeared youthful, a distinguished gentleman.
Yet now, Yolanda realized he had begun to resemble an elderly man in his sixties or seventies. His hair had turned white, his face lacked vitality, and his panic-stricken expression was terribly pitiful.
Unable to bear it any longer, she finally released Jaxon Greenwood’s hand and turned to glare fiercely at Melissa Greenwood.
Jaxon Greenwood instinctively withdrew further inside, watching Yolanda cautiously.
Yolanda turned to Lola. "Can you watch him for me for a moment?"
"Okay." Lola nodded and softly reminded, "Be careful."
Yolanda pivoted and walked out, her expression icy as she passed Melissa Greenwood. "Come outside with me!"
Melissa Greenwood leisurely slumped back into the chair, crossing her legs, clearly in no rush. "What’s this? Does Miss Greenwood have orders for me?"
"Melissa Greenwood, do you even have a shred of humanity?" Yolanda was struggling to maintain her composure, lowering her voice. "The man inside was once your father—now he’s like this, and you don’t feel the least bit sorrowful?"
"Ha..." Melissa Greenwood stood up abruptly. "Yolanda, let’s be clear—’once’ he was my father. Later, he aligned with his biological daughter—meaning you—and tried to drive me to my death. Why should I feel sorrow for him?"
Yolanda looked incredulous. "Who said he tried to drive you to your death? When did he ever try to do that?"
"Yolanda, are you still trying to deceive me? Isn’t this getting ridiculous?" Melissa Greenwood’s tone grew sharp. "You dare say he didn’t plan to give all the Coldson Family assets to you? That he didn’t want to acknowledge you as his daughter, turning me into the unloved, unwanted girl from Third Greenwood’s household?"
Yolanda shook her head in frustration. "Melissa Greenwood, you’re insane! A cold-blooded creature without a heart!"
"Of course. You, Yolanda, are heartfelt, noble, ever the saint." Melissa Greenwood slouched back in her seat. "Well, go ahead—take him away now."
Yolanda looked at her, aghast.
"What’s the matter? Can’t keep up the act?" Melissa Greenwood mocked. "He’s now a fool; with Greenwood Group’s fortune, you won’t get a penny. So, what—you don’t want him anymore?"
She clicked her tongue twice, smirking. "I thought you had more dignity than this. If you don’t want him, fine—since we’re talking about money, I’ll make sure he’s placed in a halfway decent retirement home to live out his days."
"I’m willing to take him." Yolanda promptly corrected her, "I just didn’t expect you’d relinquish him so easily."
Melissa Greenwood’s face hardened. She stood up again, staring directly at Yolanda. "Think this through. From now on, he’s a burden who’ll need care for even his most basic needs. And remember, he doesn’t recognize you. In his mind right now, his daughter is named Melissa."
Yolanda nodded firmly. "I understand. I’m ready to take him home. When can I take him?"
Melissa Greenwood furrowed her brows, reaching out as if to touch Yolanda’s forehead. "Yolanda Greenwood, are you feeling alright?"
"I’m fine." Yolanda brushed her hand away with disdain. "Take Greenwood Group’s assets, take the title of Miss Greenwood—all I want is to take him away."
Melissa Greenwood still found it hard to believe. Stroking her chin, she muttered, "You’re not still hoping he’ll regain his senses someday, are you?"
She let out a bitter laugh. "Let me tell you—you’re dreaming. The only thing awaiting him is a miserable, undignified death."
"Enough!" Yolanda didn’t want to argue further. She turned and headed back to the hospital room. "Please arrange for his discharge now. I’m taking him away immediately."
"Crazy!" Melissa Greenwood cursed under her breath but still proceeded to make the arrangements.
The fact was, Jaxon Greenwood was going to be a major nuisance. She had no intention of keeping him for even another day, much less caring for him personally.
To her, Yolanda was nothing but a self-righteous lunatic, deluded by a sense of false nobility.
Back in the hospital room, Yolanda apologized to Lola. "Lola, I’m arranging for Dad to be discharged today. I plan to take him home. But don’t worry..."
"Yolanda, what are you talking about? Our home is Uncle Greenwood’s home." Lola cut her off and started packing up Jaxon Greenwood’s belongings. "Uncle Greenwood’s not going anywhere."
"Thank you, Lola." Yolanda was deeply grateful but didn’t intend for Jaxon Greenwood to stay with them long.
She had already purchased another house, planning to relocate Jaxon Greenwood there soon. Melissa Greenwood’s decision to abandon him unexpectedly accelerated her plans, and she was relieved.
Once everything was packed, Jaxon Greenwood stubbornly refused to leave with them.
"Let go of me, let go of me," the old man struggled fiercely. "I need to find my daughter; I need to find Melissa."
"Uncle Greenwood, you remembered wrong. Melissa isn’t your daughter. Yolanda is." Lola tried to correct him.
"You’re talking nonsense!" Jaxon Greenwood’s eyes flared with anger. "How could I forget my own daughter? Melissa is my daughter."
"Dad, you’re right—Melissa is your daughter." Yolanda soothingly clung to Jaxon Greenwood’s arm. "Take a good look at me—I’m Melissa."
Jaxon Greenwood hesitantly gazed at her. "You... really are Melissa?"
"Yolanda!" Lola couldn’t hold back her sobs.
Yolanda motioned for her to stay quiet. So long as they could take her father away peacefully, she was willing to impersonate anyone.
"Come now, Dad, your health is better now. We’re leaving the hospital." She spoke gently. "Melissa is taking you home."
"Alright, home—with my sweetheart wife." Jaxon Greenwood beamed with joy.
But that one sentence caused Yolanda’s tears to fall uncontrollably once again.
