Chapter 25: Chapter 25: Giving Mom a Chance for Redemption
"Ah!"
Cooper Coldson slammed on the brakes, bringing the car to an abrupt halt, leaving Yolanda Greenwood frightened out of her wits.
"Are you crazy?" she asked, her voice trembling and her heart still racing.
"Isn’t this over?" he retorted, his gaze brimming with loathing, disdain, and impatience.
"Do you really not understand why you were able to return to Baruy?" he questioned.
Yolanda, struggling to catch her breath, responded, "What do you mean?"
"If it wasn’t for Melissa pleading with the company and vouching for you, do you think you’d be back?" he revealed.
"Is that what she told you?"
Yolanda’s voice cracked with emotion. "So, you believe whatever she says? And my words are just lies?"
"What else should I think?" Cooper said coldly, his eyes fixated on her. "Why should I trust you?"
Yolanda closed her eyes, leaning back in her seat in despair.
She desperately wanted to ask Cooper why he believed Melissa Greenwood, but she knew the answer—it was because he loved her.
Cooper noticed a tear flash quickly across Yolanda’s eyes, and for some reason, it just irritated him more.
He spoke harshly, "You know exactly what you’ve done. Stop playing these games and testing my patience!"
The drive back to the Coldson Family home was silent; neither of them spoke another word.
Once the car was parked, Cooper’s phone rang—it was a call from Melissa Greenwood.
He answered it without any hesitation.
"Cooper, can you come over now? I want to give something back to you. I don’t want to cause you trouble, so maybe we should just call off the wedding," she said tentatively.
"Melissa, don’t overthink things. Rest well and prepare for the wedding with peace of mind. Trust me," he reassured her.
After hanging up, Cooper caught Yolanda watching him.
Her gaze weighed heavily on his chest.
Taking a difficult breath, Yolanda asked, "Do you really like Melissa Greenwood that much? Do you truly understand her?"
"Get out," Cooper urged, unable to wait to be rid of her.
Yolanda sniffed and felt that lingering any longer would be shameless.
She exited the vehicle, and just as she shut the door and was about to thank him, she saw Cooper speed off.
Yolanda shook her head with a bitter smile. It seemed Young Master Coldson was in a rush to woo Melissa Greenwood—Cooper was seriously smitten.
She composed herself and made her way home alone.
Meanwhile, at the Greenwood Family house.
Melissa Greenwood’s expression had not softened after the call.
She clutched her phone tightly, fuming, "I originally thought Yolanda would be easy to control, with no complications. I didn’t expect her to pull this."
"Melissa, don’t worry," Eliana Reed said, trying to console her. "No matter what Yolanda does, she can’t change Cooper’s feelings."
"You don’t understand," Melissa responded angrily. "Dragging this out isn’t good for anyone."
She turned to Eliana. "Call her over this weekend," she demanded.
"Alright," Eliana readily agreed.
The next day, which happened to be Friday.
Yolanda left her company’s building, but Cooper’s car was nowhere to be seen.
She was puzzled until she saw a red sports car parked not far away, with Cooper Coldson stepping out of it.
A new car?
Yolanda thought this ostentatious vehicle didn’t suit Young Master Coldson’s style.
Soon enough, she realized what was happening.
Cooper handed the keys to Melissa and seemed to glance in Yolanda’s direction for a fleeting moment.
The car was a gift for Melissa Greenwood.
Yolanda’s heart tasted the bitterness; Cooper was willing to spend lavishly to make Melissa happy and not give Yolanda any opportunity to intervene.
Not wanting to impose any further, Yolanda decided to take a taxi home.
That evening, she unexpectedly received a message from Eliana Reed.
"Yolanda, why haven’t you visited your mom lately? Are you still mad at her? Mom made a mistake. Come home tomorrow, give mom a chance to make amends."
Yolanda was skeptical but decided it would be a good opportunity to get out, as the DNA test results should also be available then.
So she replied, "Okay."
The next day, Yolanda woke up early, got ready, and first went to the Greenwood’s.
Surprisingly, Eliana Reed greeted her warmly, a complete turnabout in demeanor.
"Yolanda, mom heard you started working. How’s it going? Are you happy?" Eliana asked.
Yolanda nodded, "It’s fine."
"Yolanda, mom really feels for you. When have you ever needed to work? How about we quit this job?" Eliana suggested.
Yolanda was speechless. "Quit? Then who would support me?"
"I will support you," Eliana said, taking Yolanda’s hand. "Yolanda, mom has a plan. Quit your job, and I’ll send you abroad to study."
"Study abroad?" It felt like a dream to Yolanda.
"Yes, you love painting, don’t you? I’ll send you abroad to study art, how about that?" Eliana said with a gleaming smile. However, Yolanda couldn’t shake off a chilling sensation.
"What’s the catch?" she hesitated to ask.
Studying abroad was appealing, but Eliana Reed was not the type to offer such generosity out of the blue.
"What conditions?"
Eliana’s eyes darted away momentarily.
"You always overthink things. I am your mother, why would I impose conditions on you?" Eliana said gravely. "Believe me, everything I do is for your good. One day you’ll understand."
"Like the time you plotted against me and Cooper Coldson? That was for my good too?" Yolanda needed to be clear-headed.
Eliana paused. "Didn’t you like him?"
"And what about my divorce now?" Yolanda pressed, fully alert.
"My dear, now that Melissa has returned, Cooper’s love is for her. If you don’t divorce him, he’ll find ways to destroy you."
Yolanda was beginning to understand. "So, you’ll send me abroad only if I divorce Cooper?"
"That’s right. When you come back from studying abroad, any man you want will be attainable," Eliana said urgently. "Listen to your mother. You won’t regret it."
Yolanda brushed off Eliana’s hand indifferently.
"What do you mean?" Eliana’s temper flared.
"I’ll think about what you’ve said," Yolanda grabbed her purse, not wanting to waste more time. "If there’s nothing else, I’ll be leaving."
"Think about it? What’s there to consider?" Eliana stepped in front of her, blocking her path. "Yolanda, clear your mind. Agree to the divorce now, and I’ll send you abroad straight away. Opportunities like this don’t come around every day."
"Has Melissa come to you?" Yolanda scoffed. "I’ll agree to the divorce, but only if you tell Cooper the truth about what happened all those years ago."
"You!" Eliana was fuming with rage, her hands on her hips, cursing, "You ungrateful creature, you’ll regret this."
Yolanda just wanted to leave as fast as possible, regretting she had believed any of Eliana Reed’s lies.
In Eliana’s eyes, Yolanda would always be inferior to Melissa.
After leaving the Greenwood’s, Yolanda immediately took a cab to the hospital.
She was desperate to get the test results.
She needed proof—it wasn’t that she didn’t deserve love, it was that everything had been wrong from the start.
She took a deep breath as the test results were finally handed to her.
Then she started reading through them.
