Chapter 245: Chapter 245: Thought Cooper Coldson Changed His Schedule for Me
"Okay, okay, I’ll go back with you," Yolanda Greenwood patted Leah Diaz’s back, trying to calm her down.
At that moment, Leah Diaz was nothing like her usual efficient self, just nodding her head in panic.
"First, give me your ID card, so I can book tomorrow’s flight for you, and you go ask for leave, okay?" Yolanda understood Leah’s emotions at that moment; any mother would be terrified in such a situation.
"Okay, okay," Leah took several deep breaths, stood up, and found her ID card in the drawer, handing it to Yolanda, "But... weren’t you planning to go back in a few days?"
"It’s okay," Yolanda tugged at the corner of her mouth, "A few days earlier is also fine. It’s a good chance to stay in the country a bit longer and meet some friends."
"Thank you, thank you, Yolanda," Leah’s eyes reddened with emotion, but this time she did not reject Yolanda’s help because she really needed someone to accompany her.
Yolanda started looking for flights and breathed a sigh of relief when she noticed there were plenty of seats available for tomorrow.
Thinking of her appointment with Cooper Coldson, she immediately sent him a message, "Sorry, I have some issues here and plan to return to the country tomorrow. I can’t go back with you."
Cooper replied quickly, "Tomorrow? That works too."
Yolanda frowned, puzzled. What did "that works too" mean?
Meanwhile, Leah turned around to call the Design Director, Candy.
"Candy, I need to take a few days off starting tomorrow. I have to go back to my country to deal with something very important."
"Tomorrow?" Candy’s voice was full of skepticism, "Leah, you know our situation here. We don’t allow last-minute leaves. Moreover, you have very important work scheduled for the day after tomorrow. I can’t approve your leave."
"Candy, I really have an urgent situation. I must go back to my country tomorrow," Leah was almost crying, "You’ve seen my performance at Tala these past few days. If it weren’t an emergency, I wouldn’t do this."
There was silence on the other end for a while before Candy asked reluctantly, "Is it a life-or-death situation involving your parents or children?"
Leah knew what Candy meant; she was asking if her loved ones were about to die.
She immediately denied it, "No, no. It’s just..."
She couldn’t explain clearly at the moment, but she firmly believed that her Little Wood would survive and wait for her to return.
"I can’t approve your leave," Candy’s tone turned cold the moment she heard it wasn’t a matter of life and death. "If you insist on leaving, remember to come back to process your resignation."
Leah listened to the dial tone, tears streaming down her face.
Before making the call, she had vaguely anticipated this would happen. The work system here was strict and rule-abiding but also impersonal.
She wasn’t lacking in annual leave, but the company was rarely flexible with sudden emergencies.
"Sister Leah," Yolanda noticed something was wrong, "What happened? Did the company refuse to give you leave?"
Leah nodded, "Yes, they said they have arranged very important work for the day after tomorrow and won’t allow me to leave my post."
"This..." Yolanda felt helpless, "Sister Leah, since you don’t want to continue working there, why not just..."
"No," Leah immediately shook her head, "I really need this job. Little Wood needs money, and I can’t lose this job."
At that moment, she had calmed down significantly, "Let me call home first to check on Little Wood’s situation, and then I’ll decide."
"That might be for the best," Yolanda gently patted Leah’s shoulder, "Talk to them nicely, don’t argue after all, you’re not there with Little Wood."
"Okay, I understand," Leah went back to her own room.
Yolanda picked up her phone again and saw a notification for a ticket purchase. She hadn’t expected Cooper to act so quickly; he had already bought her a first-class ticket for tomorrow.
Could it be... Yolanda couldn’t help but wonder, was Cooper planning to return with her tomorrow?
She immediately called Cooper, and unexpectedly he answered instantly.
For a moment, Yolanda was stunned. After their marriage, it always took numerous calls before Cooper would answer, and she hadn’t expected today would be different.
"What’s wrong?" Seeing that she didn’t speak, Cooper took the initiative.
Embarrassed, Yolanda asked, "Did you buy me a ticket for tomorrow again? Are you also coming back with me?"
"Yes. There’s an emergency back home that requires my presence tomorrow," Cooper replied seriously.
"Oh, I see," Yolanda forced a smile, having almost misinterpreted the situation, thinking Cooper had changed his plans for her.
"Is there a problem with that?" Cooper asked again.
"Nothing," Since he wasn’t returning because of her, there was no need for Yolanda to discuss the possibility of not returning tomorrow.
So, she continued, "Actually, you didn’t have to buy me a first-class ticket. Economy class would have been fine."
"Aren’t you pregnant?" Cooper replied matter-of-factly, "First class is more spacious and comfortable, suitable for you."
That kind of thought had never crossed Yolanda’s mind, given her financial situation; she tugged at her mouth and said, "Alright, thank you. Give me a card number; I’ll send you the money for the ticket."
"No need. See you tomorrow." Cooper hung up quickly, seemingly not wanting to prolong the conversation.
Yolanda knew that this small amount of money was nothing to Cooper, but since they were no longer together, she didn’t want to take advantage of him.
She planned to find an opportunity to pay him back later.
At that moment, Leah came out of her room, looking relatively fine, "Yolanda, I’m not going back for now; I’ll wait and go with you."
"Is Little Wood fine now?" Yolanda asked with concern.
Leah nodded, "Yes, he’s okay."
"Good," Yolanda tactfully didn’t ask further, but she understood that having Little Wood alive was already the best outcome.
She thought about it but decided not to tell Cooper that she wasn’t returning tomorrow since he was on a business trip. She would wait to be back in the country to discuss adopting Little May with him.
After returning to her room, Jenny Reyes called. It turned out that Ryan Sterling hadn’t found Little Wood and had checked the situation at the Cardiology department.
"Several months ago, this child named Little Wood began fainting and was transferred to Ryan’s hospital’s cardiology, but the check-up results were not good; he needed surgery as soon as possible."
Jenny detailed everything to Yolanda, "The cost of the operation isn’t too high, around fifty to sixty thousand could cover it, then the child’s father inquired about the operation-related matters, like whether it could completely cure the child’s condition, or if there would be any post-operative complications."
"And then?" Hearing this, Yolanda had a bad feeling.
"The child’s condition is not very good; previous treatments were also sporadic, which is why it worsened. To completely cure his condition, a heart transplant is needed; otherwise, there’s a risk of recurrence, and the recovery after surgery isn’t guaranteed..."
Yolanda understood, "In the end, they refused the surgery?"
