Chapter 221: Chapter 221: As Long as Mom is Happy
In the apartment, because May was there, Yolanda Greenwood went to bed early.
The little one was especially well-behaved, lying there quietly, not daring to fidget.
Yolanda smiled, "Does May usually go to bed early?"
"I don’t know." Little May blinked her big eyes, "I wait for Daddy to come home before I go to bed, but sometimes... I fall asleep while waiting."
She earnestly asked Yolanda, "Is that considered early?"
Yolanda stroked the little one’s head, "That’s fine. Does May get scared when Daddy isn’t home at night?"
"A little." The little one’s voice was milky, "The neighbors are all nice to May, there won’t be any bad people, but sometimes May has nightmares."
Poor child.
"Then next time Daddy isn’t home, would May like to come sleep over at Auntie’s place?" Yolanda asked in a gentle voice.
"Is that okay?" The little one was obviously very happy.
"Of course, Auntie really likes May," Yolanda genuinely liked the little one and gently tickled her nose.
May smiled and then curiously stared at Yolanda’s belly, "Does Auntie have a baby in her tummy? Are they going to be born soon?"
"Hmm, probably in another five or six months," Yolanda asked her, "Does May want to feel it?"
The little one nodded her head.
Yolanda then took her hand and placed it on her stomach.
"Is it hard for Auntie most of the time?"
"A little." Because she was carrying twins, Yolanda was indeed having a harder time than the average pregnant woman.
May’s eyes reddened, "May also came from Mommy’s tummy, right?"
"Of course." Yolanda faintly guessed the little one’s thoughts and comforted her, "So, Mommy won’t abandon May, she will come back for you."
Unexpectedly, May shook her head, "It’s okay, it doesn’t matter if Mommy doesn’t come back, as long as Mommy is happy."
This child was really too sensible.
"May is so good." Yolanda tucked her in, "Does May want to hear a bedtime story?"
"A bedtime story?" Little May showed confusion in her eyes, "What’s that?"
Obviously, the child had never heard a bedtime story before.
Yolanda didn’t explain but had the little one close her eyes as she began to tell a story softly, "In the vast forest, there lived all kinds of dinosaurs..."
Little May fell asleep quickly, her lips slightly upturned.
After she fell asleep, her little body involuntarily snuggled into Yolanda’s arms, and her hand clutched at Yolanda’s clothes, clearly afraid that Yolanda would leave.
A wave of sadness came over Yolanda; she gently patted the little one and soon fell asleep herself.
Around one in the morning, she heard a knock at the door; when she got up and went to the door, she saw Leah Diaz was also awake.
"Who could it be at this hour?" Leah, disturbed from her sleep, was clearly irritated.
Yolanda shook her head.
The two of them, sleepy-eyed, went to the door and asked in a low voice, "Who is it?"
"It’s me, from the apartment below." Brooks Parker’s voice came through.
"Are you insane? What time is it?" Leah said with a face that couldn’t believe it.
"He’s probably worried about May." Yolanda couldn’t help but feel apologetic, "Leah, you go back to sleep; I’ll talk to him."
"Yeah, don’t take too long," Leah sighed and dragged her body back to bed.
Yolanda opened the door and was startled when she saw the person outside, "You are...?"
Brooks Parker seemed a bit embarrassed, scratching his head with an impatient tone, "I’m from downstairs, where’s May? I’ve come to take her home."
He suddenly took a shower and cleaned himself up, so much so that he was barely recognizable.
"May has fallen asleep," Yolanda whispered to him, "How about I bring her over to you tomorrow morning..."
"I’ll take her back now," Brooks insisted.
"..." Yolanda was at a loss for words, seeing that he wouldn’t change his mind, "Alright then, wait a moment, I’ll go get her."
She tiptoed back, and upon opening the door, she saw May sitting up.
The little one, blurry-eyed, rubbed her eyes and in a milky voice said, "Daddy, you’re back."
Obviously, she had forgotten where she was sleeping. Probably at home, May would wake up when she heard her father coming back.
"Yes, Daddy is back," Yolanda approached and tenderly picked up May, whispering in her ear, "Auntie will carry you to Daddy."
Perhaps it was because Yolanda’s body was so warm and cozy, the little one quickly fell asleep again.
Yolanda handed the child to Brooks.
"Thank you," Brooks glanced at Yolanda and left with Little May. After returning home, he muttered to himself, "Why do I feel like I’ve seen her somewhere before?"
Yolanda went back to her room, equally puzzled.
Brooks had always looked disheveled in previous encounters, so she hadn’t gotten a clear look at him. Now that he had cleaned up, Yolanda also found him vaguely familiar.
But after racking her brain, Yolanda couldn’t figure out who he resembled and fell asleep in a daze.
Early the next morning, Yolanda and Leah had breakfast together, and when they went downstairs, they saw Brooks and May.
"Good morning, Auntie," May greeted obediently.
Leah was surprised to see the man’s transformation and nodded her head.
"Good morning, May," Yolanda patted Little May’s head then turned to the man, "Are you taking the kid out?"
"Yeah," Brooks seemed in a very good mood, "I’m taking her to buy some new clothes, her mother’s back."
Yolanda was overjoyed, "Then congratulations, May! You’ll see your mom soon."
"Yep," joy was written all over the little one’s face.
On their way to the company, Yolanda couldn’t help discussing it with Leah.
"I really didn’t expect May’s mom to come back. Is this a prodigal’s return?" Leah clucked in disbelief.
Yolanda smiled, "After carrying a pregnancy for ten months, and finally giving birth, how can anyone just give up their child so easily?"
"Hopefully," Leah looked at Yolanda’s belly, "Being a mom is indeed not easy."
There was sadness in her eyes.
Yolanda remembered Leah’s previous struggles to gather money and wondered if she had raised the funds.
After some hesitation, Yolanda decided not to pry further; it was clear before that Leah didn’t want her to get too involved.
She could sense Leah had a strong sense of boundaries.
At the company entrance, Leah’s phone rang. She glanced at it and asked Yolanda to go in first.
Yolanda knew it must be another call about money. She nodded and went ahead.
Leah walked to a secluded corner before answering.
"I’ll send the money over at noon. Don’t worry, it’s all been gathered. You guys need to get the surgery done fast."
Discontent was audible from the other end of the line, "Are we going to steal your money? What kind of mother are you, not staying by your child’s side—what mother acts like that?"
"I want to go back too, but the child needs money for treatment, I..."
"What? Are you the only one in this family who can make money? You earn a little and neglect your child, and you still think you’re right?"
"Mom!" Leah was filled with helplessness, "I didn’t mean anything by it. I know you’ve had a hard time taking care of Little Wood, and I’m really grateful."
"Good to know. Send the money quickly," the person on the other side hung up.
