Chapter 218: Chapter 218: Melissa Greenwood Shouldn’t Be Too Ruthless
The next morning, when Yolanda Greenwood got up, she heard Leah Diaz on the phone in the living room.
"Mom, don’t worry, I’m also trying to figure out a solution, I’ll get the surgery money as soon as possible," Leah said anxiously. Seeing Yolanda come out, she ended the call, "Alright, I’ll stop talking now."
Yolanda thought for a moment before tentatively asking, "Does someone in your family need surgery?"
"Yes," Leah’s eyes were somewhat red as she forced a slight smile, "I’ve prepared breakfast, come and eat after you wash up."
"Thank you," Yolanda said and went to freshen up briefly.
The breakfast on the table was simple but tasty, yet Leah obviously struggled to eat.
"How much more do you need for the surgery?" Yolanda asked, feeling a connection with Leah despite having known her for only a few days and wanting to help.
Leah quickly shook her head, "Not much more, I can handle it myself, thank you."
"It’s okay, I have tens of thousands of yuan on hand that I don’t need to use right now," Yolanda still wanted to help.
But Leah still refused, "Really, it’s not necessary, thank you."
That’s how different people can be; Leah and the man downstairs were clearly worlds apart.
After finishing breakfast together, they went to the office.
Throughout the day, Leah essentially led Yolanda around. At noon, Yolanda wanted to treat Leah to lunch, but Leah declined.
Yolanda noticed Leah ate very simply, clearly saving money.
This woman was really too proud, Yolanda wondered who in her family needed the surgery.
Later, when they got off work at past eight o’clock, they returned to the apartment. As they reached the third floor, they saw little May standing behind the security door.
Yolanda glanced at Leah, and Leah nodded. Yolanda then took out her keys and opened the security door.
"May, would you like to come and play at Auntie’s place?"
"Can I?" Little May looked eagerly hopeful but also seemed afraid of being a burden.
"Of course, we’d love to have you," Yolanda said with a smile.
Little May sneaked a look at Leah.
"You can, let’s go, let Aunt Greenwood take care of you," Leah said with a smile.
This reassured Little May, and she flashed a happy smile, following Yolanda upstairs.
"I’ll start cooking dinner," Leah said as they entered, "Yolanda, could you give the child a bath?"
"Sure," Yolanda agreed happily.
Yolanda changed her clothes and took Little May to the bathroom, "Little May, take off your clothes, Auntie will help you bathe, okay?"
Little May nodded.
But when Yolanda helped her undress, she clearly resisted, her whole body stiffening.
"May, you need to take off your clothes to bathe, I’ll wash your clothes too," Yolanda used a bit of force, and suddenly noticed scars on Little May’s back.
She froze instantly.
Little May almost curled up into a ball, standing motionless, her head hanging low.
Yolanda took a few deep breaths before managing to speak softly, "Sweet May, Auntie will be gentle, okay?"
May nodded again, this time cooperating more than before.
As the little one’s clothes came off bit by bit, Yolanda saw more and more scars – on her arms, legs, back... everywhere, some shockingly fresh, others apparently old.
Yolanda’s eyes reddened instantly, not knowing what this child had been through.
She pulled May into her arms, cautious not to hug too tightly, her heart aching.
"Auntie, May doesn’t hurt, not at all," the little one was so well-behaved.
Yolanda sniffed, holding back tears, "May, did... did your dad do this to you?"
May hesitated a moment before nodding, then quickly explained, "Daddy sometimes misses mommy too much and drinks, but May doesn’t blame Daddy."
Yolanda teared up instantly, the child in front of her was far too well-behaved, far too pitiful.
Yet she was merely a passerby, unable to do anything.
As she bathed May, she asked, "May, do you remember your mom?"
Perhaps, the mother had her reasons for leaving; perhaps she was the child’s only hope.
Little May shook her head; she had no memory of her mom.
Yolanda persisted, "Didn’t your mom leave any phone numbers or any way to contact her?"
Little May shook her head again.
It was really strange, could the mother truly have heartlessly abandoned May?
Yolanda continued, "What about your dad? Has he mentioned anything about your mom – what she looks like, or anything?"
Little May thought hard, then replied, "Dad said... mom is a bad woman, didn’t want us, said she... ran away secretly."
"But May doesn’t believe it; May believes that one day, mom will come back to see May," the little one looked up at Yolanda with hopeful, innocent eyes, "Auntie, you think so too, right?"
"Yes, your mom will definitely come back to see you," Yolanda soothed softly.
After bathing May, Leah had dinner ready, and the three of them finished eating by ten o’clock.
Yolanda didn’t hear any noises from downstairs, indicating the man hadn’t returned yet.
"May, would you like to sleep with Auntie?" she tentatively asked.
"Really?" Bathed and clean, Little May looked beautiful, thin but with features showing she would be a beauty when she grew up.
"Of course, Auntie really likes May and wants to sleep with you," Yolanda could tell the child was always very careful.
Leah laughed on the side, "You know, you two actually look a bit alike."
"Really?" Yolanda examined May carefully, seeming finally to see a resemblance, "Perhaps it’s fate."
She asked again, "May, would you like to stay over?"
"Yes," Little May was so happy, she couldn’t help but hug Yolanda’s neck with excitement.
Yolanda left a note on the coffee table below, so even if the man returned, he wouldn’t panic about not finding May.
Though, Yolanda had a feeling that the man wouldn’t be too worried about May’s absence.
Meanwhile, the man lingered under a glamorous commercial building, repeatedly dialing a number until it was finally answered.
"What exactly do you want? I told you, five million, I’ll pay you in three days!" came the angry voice from the other end.
"I want to see you!" the man stated bluntly.
"Impossible!"
"You disappeared all of a sudden years ago, took away my passport and ID, leaving me unable to return to my country. Do you know how I’ve lived these past two years?" the man growled.
There was silence on the other end.
The man, teeth gritted in anger, continued, "Melissa Greenwood, don’t be too ruthless. If you dared to come back, you should have expected to run into me. It’s fate!"
