Chapter 184: Chapter 184 Cooper Coldson, You’ve Fallen for Yolanda Greenwood, Haven’t You?
Cooper Coldson hesitated whether to tell Jaxon Greenwood about his true heritage.
"Cooper," Jaxon Greenwood sighed, breaking the silence first, "I owe you an apology for what happened at the last wedding."
Cooper frowned, "Why did Patriarch Greenwood allow Yolanda Greenwood in at that time?"
"It was a moment of confusion for me as well." Jaxon Greenwood didn’t want to mention Gemma Morgan; the deceased had passed, and he didn’t want others to speculate too much about his beloved wife.
He looked seriously at Cooper, "Cooper, when do you Coldsons plan to redo the wedding?"
"Aren’t you going to ask me why I left with Yolanda Greenwood at that time?" Cooper retorted.
"Is it important?" Jaxon Greenwood seemed truly indifferent, "Everyone has their moments of folly, as long as you’re sure you will still marry Melissa."
Cooper fell silent.
After discovering the mystery of his birth, for some reason, he felt uncertain about the idea of marrying Melissa Greenwood.
He faintly realized there were many things he needed to know.
Before, Cooper simply believed that since Melissa Greenwood had saved him and his brother years ago, he could accept her no matter what kind of person she was, as long as she wasn’t a murderer or arsonist.
After all, he only wanted to give her the status of a wife; he had never loved her.
But when Yolanda Greenwood suggested that what happened in the past might not have been Melissa Greenwood’s doing, everything changed.
"Cooper," Jaxon Greenwood urged when he received no reply, getting a bit anxious, "You’ve seen Melissa’s condition. Although she can be discharged now, the doctor has said that if she gets stimulated again, she might attempt suicide, and it’ll be too late to save her by then."
"Patriarch Greenwood, I understand how you feel. As for the marriage, I’ll discuss it with her slowly."
Jaxon Greenwood was right; Melissa Greenwood couldn’t handle any more stress. If Cooper clarified things with Jaxon Greenwood now, it might as well be a death sentence for Melissa Greenwood.
He planned to talk to Melissa Greenwood first.
Although Jaxon Greenwood was the Patriarch of the Greenwood Family, he still felt a strong sense of pressure when facing Cooper.
Moreover, marriage was indeed a matter between two people, and Jaxon Greenwood would not have pressured Cooper if Melissa Greenwood hadn’t repeatedly asked him to.
Without saying much more, Jaxon Greenwood asked again, "Right, you just mentioned you had something to talk about?"
"It’s actually about our wedding." Cooper lied, "I was also worried that Patriarch Greenwood might be anxious."
Jaxon nodded, and spoke with deep meaning, "Melissa is my only child. How could I not be anxious about her life-long happiness? But I also understand these things cannot be rushed. You haven’t divorced Yolanda yet, have you?"
"Yes," Cooper replied with some embarrassment, "but don’t worry, Patriarch Greenwood, it should be soon."
Jaxon Greenwood gave a wry smile, "I trust you’ll handle it well."
He left soon after, leaving Cooper to stay with Melissa Greenwood for the night.
As Cooper opened the door, he saw Melissa Greenwood seemingly waiting eagerly at the door, waiting for his return.
He strode forward, "Why haven’t you slept yet?"
Melissa Greenwood looked down, her voice feeble, "I can’t sleep without you here."
Cooper said nothing.
Melissa then looked up at him with a fearful face, "Cooper, am I too much trouble?"
"Don’t talk nonsense." Cooper pulled up a chair and sat beside the bed, looking at Melissa.
He realized something—he had known Melissa for so many years but it seemed he had never truly looked at her. So, at this moment, he somehow felt she was a stranger.
In college, Cooper always believed that it was Yolanda Greenwood who was the little girl who had saved him back then. Despite all his attempts, he never got any response.
Sometimes, he couldn’t quite distinguish – what were his feelings for Yolanda Greenwood at that time?
Afterward, Melissa Greenwood appeared with the Jade Pendant, and he realized he had mistaken someone else for her.
He couldn’t remember the scene of their recognition anymore, but the emotions from that time were still vivid in his mind.
So, Yolanda Greenwood wasn’t that little girl!
This was the sole thought in his mind at that time.
As Melissa kept showing up more frequently, he still didn’t have eyes for her.
He even feared her appearances, although he didn’t know exactly what he was afraid of.
The day finally came when Melissa, in tears, confessed she was infertile and that she had fallen in love with him... and they ended up together.
It all seemed so sudden, but Cooper Coldson felt as though he had long anticipated it.
He didn’t dare face Yolanda Greenwood again; he told himself that he had only thought Yolanda was the girl he owed his gratitude to, while the person he truly owed was Melissa.
Was it really Melissa?
Cooper looked at the pitiful figure on the hospital bed, finding himself truly unable to associate her with that four-year-old little girl; he just couldn’t.
In his memory, that frail child stubbornly stood in front of him, facing even the kidnappers he feared without a trace of fright.
Such an expression didn’t belong on her face.
A flash of disgust suddenly appeared in Cooper’s eyes, fleeting but still caught by Melissa.
Melissa’s heart skipped a beat, a wave of intense unease flooding her.
She knew Cooper rarely looked at her directly, but this kind of look was a first. Could he have found out something?
"Melissa," Cooper finally spoke, "have you ever felt that Eliana Reed treats you very well, even better than she treats Yolanda?"
He kept his gaze on Melissa’s face.
Melissa showed a fleeting moment of panic, and Cooper’s staring made her feel uneasy.
She was sure Cooper knew.
She lowered her head, and after only a moment’s struggle, decided not to lie, "You know already."
Cooper narrowed his eyes and straightened up; the brief exchange of looks made him realize something—Melissa was no simple character!
"Talk," he said in a casual tone.
"Cooper, I also found out not long ago that I’m not the biological daughter of my mom and dad." When Melissa looked up again, her face was covered in tears, "Yolanda and I must have been switched at birth."
Cooper coldly asked her, "Since you already knew, why didn’t you say anything?"
"Say it? Are you suggesting I tell Yolanda?" Melissa bit her lip, "So the moment you learned about this, you only thought of Yolanda and didn’t consider my feelings at all?"
Cooper frowned.
Melissa suddenly laughed, "Do you think I’m the one who gained an advantage here?"
Cooper remained silent, because, in his view, Melissa indeed had the advantage.
"Cooper, you really don’t have a shred of love for me," Melissa said in a choked voice as she lay back, turning away from Cooper, "Since that’s what you think, you can go tell my dad now, tell Yolanda."
Her voice took on a tone of desolate resignation at the end.
"Melissa," Cooper didn’t leave immediately, but patiently said, "After all, this is a private matter between the two families. I won’t get involved."
Melissa suddenly sat up, "But in your heart, you clearly favor Yolanda; you’re really in love with her, aren’t you?"
