Chapter 109: Chapter 109: Incessant Bickering with a Bunch of Kids
"Sister Yolanda, Sister Yolanda," Little Maria tugged at Yolanda Greenwood’s trousers, teary-eyed, "Please, think of a way to help them. Edmund really likes that kite."
"It’s okay." Edmund, who had been staring intently at the kite just a second earlier, quickly ran to Little Maria. "It’s okay, when I grow up, I’ll buy a bigger and prettier kite myself."
He wiped away Little Maria’s tears. "Maria, you shouldn’t cry. Crying doesn’t make you pretty."
Yolanda Greenwood was slightly moved as she looked at the two children. She looked up at the kite, thinking someone should be able to reach it.
She crouched down and pointed to Cooper Coldson not far away, "That man over there should be able to get it down. Let’s ask him for help."
To her surprise, Little Maria immediately hid behind Yolanda Greenwood. "No, he’s scary."
"I’ll go, I’m not scared!" Edmund declared, clearly still very fond of the kite.
So, Yolanda led a group of children over, with everyone except Stella Sterling and Edmund hiding behind her, seemingly afraid of Cooper Coldson.
Cooper Coldson was in the middle of a voice conference. He wasn’t someone who wasted time easily. Seeing Yolanda leading a group towards him, he frowned disapprovingly.
"Uncle, my kite is stuck in the tree. Can you help me get it down?" Edmund stepped forward boldly.
"Kid, don’t you see I’m busy?" Cooper rejected coldly. "I don’t have time."
"Please help, uncle. It won’t take too long," Stella pleaded.
"No time. How many times do I have to say it?" Cooper quickly lost his patience.
Yolanda Greenwood, feeling helpless, was about to step forward and persuade him further when she heard Little Maria crying behind her.
"Wuu wuu wuu... Uncle is mean, I don’t like Uncle anymore."
Yolanda raised an eyebrow. Hadn’t the little girl been scared of Cooper? When did she start to like him?
"Maria, sweetheart, don’t cry, okay!" Yolanda crouched down to comfort her, giving Cooper a displeased glance.
By this time, Cooper had already taken off his earphones, looking a bit helpless as he stared at Little Maria. "Baby, who asked you to like me?"
"Wuu wuu wuu... Uncle is a bad man, I really dislike Uncle..." Little Maria’s cries grew louder.
"Stop crying!" Cooper said, unable to hide his annoyance.
Yolanda sensed something different in his tone and turned back to say, "Then why don’t you just help get the kite down?"
Cooper looked at Yolanda, then at the still crying Baby, and finally stood up.
"Alright, alright, I’ll go get it now!" He looked utterly helpless.
"Really?" Little Maria immediately stopped crying and peered through her tears at Cooper, "Uncle agreed to help?"
Cooper felt like he had been tricked. He was just about to refuse when he saw Baby pouting again.
"Really, I’m going now!" He really was scared now and quickly asked them to lead the way to get the kite.
Little Maria immediately beamed with happiness and clapped excitedly, "That’s great, Sister Yolanda! Uncle agreed to help."
"Wait a minute!" Cooper instantly sensed something amiss. "Why does she call you sister but calls me uncle?"
Yolanda burst into laughter. "Maybe you look too old."
"You!" Cooper was fuming, crouching down in front of Little Maria, "Call me big brother, or I won’t help you with the kite."
"Big Brother." Baby’s voice was incredibly cute.
Cooper Coldson’s face revealed a faint smile that was hard to detect as he provocatively looked at Yolanda Greenwood.
"Sister Yolanda," Little Maria immediately ran up to Yolanda Greenwood and said in a voice loud enough for everyone to hear, "That uncle is really shameless, asking me to call him brother when he’s so old."
"Hahaha..." Yolanda Greenwood burst into laughter, finding Little Maria too adorable.
She looked at Cooper Coldson, whose face had turned as black as the bottom of a pot, and laughed even harder.
"If you keep laughing like this, I definitely won’t help," Cooper Coldson threatened Yolanda Greenwood fiercely.
Yolanda Greenwood quickly held back her laughter, shaking her head, "I won’t laugh anymore, please help."
"Yes, yes, please help," Little Maria also went over to plead with him.
"Little rascal!" Cooper Coldson said with a look of disdain, but still went over to help retrieve the kite.
Being tall with long arms, he easily reached the kite that seemed so high up just by stretching his arm.
"That’s great, that’s great!" The children immediately surrounded Cooper Coldson, cheering.
"Big brother, you’re so amazing, you’re a hero." Little Maria hugged Cooper Coldson’s thigh, "I really like you, big brother."
Cooper Coldson froze, with Baby clinging to his leg. He felt he could accidentally send her flying with just a little force, so he could only turn to Yolanda Greenwood for help.
"Quick, take this little baby away, her drool is getting on my clothes."
Yolanda Greenwood laughed from a short distance, "It’s okay, children’s drool isn’t dirty."
"Right." Little Maria nodded vigorously, "I brush my teeth diligently every day, it’s not dirty."
"Yolanda Greenwood!" Cooper Coldson gritted his teeth, his eyes full of threat.
However, Yolanda Greenwood could tell that although this man said he didn’t like children, he really didn’t dare to hurt them at all, truly a man whose actions contradicted his words.
She spread her hands, showing she was unwilling to help.
The children quickly realized that this big brother might look cold, but he was a good person who wouldn’t hurt them.
Thus, they became even bolder, pulling Cooper Coldson to go and fly kites.
Finally, Little Maria let go of Cooper Coldson’s thigh, her big, sparkling eyes watching him, "The kite big brother flies will surely go high and far, Maria wants to see."
She obediently returned to Yolanda Greenwood’s side, "Sister Yolanda, let’s watch big brother fly the kite together."
Seeing Cooper Coldson indeed didn’t refuse immediately, Yolanda Greenwood smiled and nodded, "Okay, let’s cheer for the big brother together!"
"What a hassle!" Cooper Coldson complained, but still went to fly kites with Edmund and the others.
Unfortunately, despite being tall and strong, he had never flown a kite before and simply couldn’t get it to fly.
Cooper Coldson, a man with strong pride, refused to show his failure and ended up arguing incessantly with the children.
Before long, Edmund returned with a face full of disdain, "Turns out not every adult is that impressive. Big brother is so clumsy, he simply can’t fly a kite."
Yolanda Greenwood chuckled, but felt a pang of bitterness in her heart.
She thought about how Cooper Coldson didn’t know how to fly a kite because he never had a childhood, never played with the things little children do.
She patted Edmund on the head, "Big brother might not know how to fly a kite, but when he was as young as you, he devoted himself to protecting his family just like you. While other children were playing, he was striving to grow up and become more powerful."
"Really?" Edmund’s look of disdain quickly vanished, "Then I want to learn from big brother and become very strong, to protect Maria and Sister Stella too."
