Dungeon Raider System -
Chapter 707 - 707: Unworthy hunter
The low battery warning came at the worst possible timing and Uriel was forced to cancel his Dash skill revealing something he had failed to notice. The further away he went from the dungeon entrance, the less solid the ground had became to the point where it became just like quicksand.
It was barely noticeable while moving at a fast speed since it felt just as solid as ground, but the moment he cancelled Dash Uriel started slowly sinking.
"Not now!" Uriel cursed as he looked around for any solid point to use as leverage, yet he was unable to see anything other than the cryptid corpses that were slowly fading while sinking alongside him at the same time.
'Summoning the jaguar will only help for as long as I have flux energy. I could probably use the Red thread of fate to recover some, but that would leave me open for attacks and without the Dash skill I'd be good as dead.' Uriel pondered while remaining still in order to stop sinking.
Regaining flux energy was possible if he managed to stab a cryptid with the Red thread of fate, but it not only was a slow process that depended on both the damage inflicted, it also required him to be in proximity.
"The dagger!" He exclaimed as he realized he was still tethered to the entrance and started pulling on the wire to get himself out of the quicksand. It worked like a charm, but the field was enormous and he was following the exact same path he took to get there in a straight line.
This meant he wouldn't cross any cryptids on his way since he killed everything that moved and therefore would be unable to regain any flux.
He stored the glasses which constantly consumed a hefty amount of flux energy and continued pulling on the wire drawing closer to the energy fluctuations he felt at the distance completely unable to help his 'rescuers'.
Many times he was tempted to shoot a flare, but that could potentially cause the students to fall on the same trap he did which is why he continued on his effort to pull himself closer to the students.
When the fight broke out and they defeated their first enemy Uriel couldn't have been prouder knowing his teachings didn't go to waste. Unfortunately, they remained on the spot which prompted Uriel to double his efforts, but failed to reach them before they were surrounded by cryptids which eventually led to Scoundrel's unfortunate death.
"Why did you kill him!?" Ashanti accused Uriel who couldn't be bothered to even look at her as he confirmed with a wry smile that Scoundrel's soul had been added to the book of the dead.
[System notice] Scoundrel's soul has been added to the book of the dead.
"Alice, I think he would have wanted you to keep this," Uriel said as he opened Scoundrel's palm revealing the obsidian arrow head he encountered. "it's the first artifact he ever found, take good care of it."
"Thanks," Alice said in a coarse voice, her past eye set on the moment Scoundrel exhaled his last breath. "Professor Nika asked us to give you this." She handed Uriel the tier 3 battery which he promptly activated to recharge his cellphone. Neither Ashanti nor Alice noticed how the arcs of electricity kept on going until the entire tier 3 battery was drained by Uriel's smartphone.
Recharging his battery was just what Uriel needed and was now able to use any skill he so desired and could resume the exploration of the dungeon, but now his priority was to get the students to safety and instead summoned his jaguar and gestured the girls to mount it.
They were so distraught by Scoundrel's demise they didn't even question Uriel and did as he asked. The jaguar spirit lowered his loin for Alice to mount him showing more sympathy than Uriel himself, but when it was Ashanti's turn the jaguar spirit remained standing while emitting a low growl that made her think twice before attempting to ride the beast.
"What happened, where's Scoundrel?" Asked Hathaway, his words falling on deaf ears. "Is that a cryptid!?"
Uriel ignored him and remained silent, cancelling the summon the moment the two students touched ground. He then walked towards Ashanti and snatched the firearm from her hand.
"You are not worthy to call yourself a hunter." He said before storing Ashanti's weapon inside his trait.
[Ashanti gun] Semi automatic pistol responsible for killing an archaeology student.
"You dare tell me that after you killed Scoundrel in front of us!?" Ashanti cried.
"You know... I used to have a shitty aim," Uriel scoffed, then continued. "my friends always made fun of me for that and more than once my life was in danger because I couldn't use my revolver properly. Do you know what I did? I practiced until I became good at hitting my target. Do you know what I didn't do?"
"I don't care about your sob story, you killed my best friend!" Ashanti attempted to summon her weapon, but it didn't appear. She channeled flux as usual, then attempted pouring even more to the point of getting tired, but the pistol would never again be summoned by her as Uriel stole it.
"I never opened fire if there was a chance to hit my friends. If that meant I had to fight in close range and fire point blank I would do it. Risking your own life is a hunter's choice, but risking that of your team's without consideration puts you on the same level as the things we fight against."
"Why is my trait gone!? I can't use it!" Ashanti fell on her knees uncaring of what Uriel just explained her, uncaring of Scoundrel or if the world continued spinning. Without her pistol her trait meant nothing.
Hathaway remained silent as he didn't know what happened inside the dungeon, only that one of his friends would never return.
"Take off your clothes." Uriel told Alice who much to Hathaway's surprise did as she was told without showing a hint of embarrassment. She remained standing in front of the group in nothing but her underwear while Uriel plucked bullets from her body with his pocket knife without letting out so much as a yelp.
Her back was covered in bullet wounds caused by Ashanti which was enough for Hathaway to understand that although Ashanti's claim that Uriel killed Scoundrel may have been true, the one actually responsible for his death was Ashanti.
After finishing taking the bullets out from Alice's body, Uriel looked up in the sky as he noticed a foreign energy signature which confirmed him that the information provided to him by Lister was true. He turned towards the students and looked each and everyone in the eye before speaking the following words.
"If you want to live, run."
