Chapter 679 - 679: Extra 2
Once upon a time in Mexico not long after the world government had been established, a man too tall with a skin too fair to be a local walked down the streets of a desolated town in the middle of nowhere. Doors were shut and most windows were boarded, but as the man walked the entire neighborhood seemingly woke up.
A head poking outside a window here, a door opening to a slit there until Jon found himself completely surrounded by people with dark hair and tanned skin. Their ages ranged from the early teens to the late sixties and they dressed in dissimilar clothes. One thing they all had in common, though, was that everyone carried a weapon of the sorts.
"I'm not here to fight." Said the archaeologist Jon Hunter with an awkward smile as he lifted his arms in surrender.
"We know your type and we also know why you're here." A woman spat on the ground after speaking, then turned her head and called. "Francis, there's a foreigner here looking for you."
A man at least a head taller than the rest of the townsmen broke through the crowd to face the archaeologist. His appearance was that of a man on his forties with an unkempt appearance, his white shirt was stained with brown on several spots and a shotgun shell bandolier crossed his chest. He also carried two long knives on his back and two pistols holstered on the hip.
Jon studied the man's appearance wondering how many weapons would fall off of him if he grabbed him by his boots and shook him like a fruit bearing tree.
"You're their leader, right? Please, you don't have to do this. We can't afford to fight among ourselves, not with all those things attacking us from everywhere." Jon begged, but the man shook his head.
"It's precisely thanks to those things that we're finally free from the oppression of other countries. You had your chance to leave us alone, but you decided to come here and now it's too late to back down." The leader, drew both pistols and opened fire at the lonely archaeologist who remained still knowing that firearms would have no effect on his holy rank body.
Unfortunately for the locals, the bullets bounced of Jon's chest and the shrapnel hurt many of those surrounding Jon. The screams of pain triggered the ill trained townsmen who up until that point had only fought against beast rank cryptids and they all emptied their magazines on the holy rank hunter.
The ensuing ricochet caused even more injured which only served to spread panic and prompting even more people to open fire.
"Bollocks!" Jon cursed at his own stupidity and that of his attackers as the worst possible outcome came to happen before he wanted to take notice. Truth be told Jon lacked the experience to foresee that result and the same applied to the townsmen.
Although the existence of people with strange abilities that couldn't be explained became general knowledge once the cryptids appeared, hunters were enshrouded by mystery and the extent of their power had yet to be tested.
Most of the townsmen who rallied lied now on the ground and about half of them had died due to direct friendly fire as most people missed their mark. Blood was scattered all over the place and much to their shock and horror, when the dust settled Jon remained unscathed.
"You!" The town leader was so angry he couldn't find the words, but that didn't stop him from pushing on the offensive by quickly drawing both his knives and slashing at Jon in a swift motion.
In order to defuse the situation Jon thought it better to remain still and not show any aggression. He expected the knives to bend like cheap cutlery upon contact with his skin, but reality begged to differ. Despite his holy rank, the knives cut deep into his flesh up to the bone leaving both his arms completely disabled.
"How is this possible!? You're a hunter too!?" Jon gasped retreating with a quick jump, both arms hanging limp like wet noodles. The man in front of him was indeed a hunter, yet that wasn't enough to explain the deep gashes crossing Jon's arms and the only possible explanation was that the items he was looking for had to be the knives wielded by Francis.
"You came here looking for trouble and now you found it." Francis snarled at the same time his feet touched ground and using the momentum to propel himself forward and continue his onslaught on Jon who now dodged by crouching.
"Stop this madness, we can save your people, they can still be saved!" Jon begged once more, yet the man didn't stop and instead became more vicious.
"They say they're fighting to save humanity, when they're all just looking out for themselves. All you know to do is take from the poor to feed the rich. We'd rather die than lose our freedom to the so called world government!"
"That's not true, we're here to help!" Jon exclaimed offended. As the world's most renowned archaeologist he had been part of the congress that formed the world government in response to the many dangers that threatened humanity's existence as a species.
Famine, droughts, climate change, disease, solar flares, earthquakes, all sorts of natural disasters forced humanity to acknowledge the damage they caused to the planet and join hands in an effort to revert the situation. Unfortunately, not everyone shared their beliefs. Especially after the arrival took place and people were left to fend for themselves.
"To help yourselves for sure. No one came when we called, no one opened their doors when we knocked and now we're standing on our two feet you come here to boss us around!?" With each strike the man seemingly became stronger, his feet light as a feather despite his muscular appearance allowing him to match the holy rank hunter's speed who now knew better than to receive another slash.
"I'm not here to boss you around, I'm just looking to buy some artifacts, that's all." Jon crouched, jumped and rolled on the ground as he bled all over the place trying his best to keep distance, but Francis followed him displaying an inhuman stamina and speed thanks to his heavenly rank.
"See? I knew it! You're all a bunch of thieves!" Sweat trickled down the Mexican warrior's face as he channeled flux to activate his trait, though that didn't went unnoticed by the holy rank hunter who moved in for a kick.
"It's not stealing if you're paying." Jon countered.
"And what use is your money when we can't buy anything with it? It's just a bunch of numbers on a screen." Francis growled as he dodged one kick that was soon followed by another.
"Why don't you want our help!? Even with your trait you're not a match for the cryptids out there." Jon tried once more to convince the man who barely dodged the second kick right after activating his skill that not only made him ambidextrous but also boosted his agility to the point where he was able to fight on part with the holy rank hunter.
Jon was taken aback when the long knife made a transversal cut through his leg but countered with a powerful kick that allowed him to get some distance. As annoying as his enemy's persistence was Jon remained calm as he was confident in having the upper hand.
Being surrounded by people without traits didn't faze him and fighting against a heavenly rank hunter would only be dangerous if he let his guard down like before.
"What is your name?" Jon asked standing in one foot, the other hanging just as limp as his arms. That question meant Jon recognized him as a worthy opponent, a feat that would have impressed those who knew Jon's identity as a holy rank hunter.
A crooked smile appeared on the man's face as he braced himself for what he knew was coming. He knew he was no match for the champion of humanity as he was famous all over the world for his bravery and power.
The fight as well as the sacrifice made by his neighbors was not a meaningless struggle as it was meant to prove Jon they weren't a bunch of weaklings, but proud warriors that would stand for what they believed in.
The powerful surge of flux energy coming off from Jon Hunter caused strange phenomena all over the town. Pebbles floated weightless in mid air, dust arose from all corners and debris was expelled outward in a windless breeze as Jon's eyes glinted in blue. Sparks of electricity appeared from the light posts and some even caught fire as Jon activated his trait.
It was just a means to intimidate the man and it seemingly worked as the man dropped the precious long knives on the ground like trash and a relieved smile made his way to Jon's face, only to disappear when he noticed the man rushed to the town center with a shocked expression just before the flames lit up their gunpowder reservoir.
That day Jon Hunter learned his trait was too powerful to be controlled and the world government approved the law that prohibited holy rank hunters from using their traits inside city walls, yet something even more important happened.
"My name is Francis Garcia..." The man gurgled his response to Jon, his body a broken mess after using his body to protect her beloved daughter called Nika.
