Dungeon Raider System -
Chapter 675 - 675: Media coverage
Unlike most people, reporters wouldn't run away from unexplained phenomena without at least recording the events. Since most of the times there were cryptids involved and they couldn't be caught on camera, it resulted in newspapers being the main source of information for citizens and TV being mostly focused on entertainment.
The most daring journalists would not just record unexplained phenomena, but actively seek for them in order to get the scoop before their competitors making them an invaluable source of information even for the government. Needless to say, the bravest of them all was the first one to set out and look for answers to the mysterious explosion and the earthquakes that followed.
"Are you sure this is safe, Miss June?" Asked the camera man at a lovely young woman who stuck out half her body out the window of their armored van.
"If it was, we wouldn't get paid as much as we do." She turned to wink at the camera knowing full well it was pointed at her buttocks. Her business wasn't just gathering data and offering it to the public, her job was to make it as entertaining as possible and there were no boundaries she wasn't willing to cross for that matter.
She had no qualms about using her body as a hook as long as it fished her an audience big enough to make it worth her while, just as she didn't fear fighting the cryptids that dared stand in her way as she was also the bearer of a trait powerful enough to let her survive almost anything.
Her true power, though, didn't come from the nature of her trait or even her heavenly rank. It also didn't come from the wealth she amassed over time but from her audience.
She wasn't just the most popular reporter on a city that turned entertainment into their trade, if not for Allegro's success a singer she would have been the most popular person in the entire megacity. Despite him being more popular than her, though, she wielded the power of the masses like a sword making her even stronger than the holy rank hunter himself.
But sharing the spotlight with Allegro didn't worry her in the slightest, especially since she was also among Allegro's fans and had a crush on him from the day he showed up in the city.
"That may be so, but..." The camera man attempted to rebuke, but the van shook violently as another earthquake took place.
"There goes another, this will be a huge one. I feel it in my gut!" She said as she sat back on her back facing seat which allowed the camera man to capture the scenery along with June's voluptuous body jiggling in a luscious way as she pretended to act shy.
Her shyness was an act that could be considered her trademark, just as her 'truth seeker' persona that wouldn't fear pointing fingers at the real or imaginary corruption she 'unveiled' during her investigations.
Inwardly, she wished Lister was a corrupt governor that took advantage of the citizens for personal gain as it would allow her to make a big fuss about it and might even result in kicking him out, just as they kicked their previous governor out when he fell sink, line and hook for her shenanigans, but unfortunately Lister and Allegro were a package deal.
"Wow! There seems to be a huge crater at the lost city we covered last time. Look at that, the buildings are crumbling. Are you recording this?" She asked the cameraman who gave her a thumbs up as the camera hovered outside the van in movement.
Burk's trait was telekinesis which allowed him to move objects with his mind, turning him into one of the best possible companions for June. He was also one of his fans and couldn't believe his luck when she picked him as an assistant, though after he saw what little remained of the lost city he started re thinking his career.
"Hey, there's a zeppelin right there and... why are they using yellow tape?" She wondered out loud as the van stopped right before the crater started.
"I'm sorry, but this poi is under the Dungeon Raiders company control. People from outside the company aren't welcome." Amy explained, though became flustered as soon as she realized they were recording her best angle and hurried to cover her chest with a hand.
"Hi, I'm June and I'm here to investigate what happened here." June introduced herself as she attempted to open the door, only to have it firmly shut by Longlegs who tapped it with her foot.
"She said fuck off, now fuck off." She grumbled.
"What are you hiding? Who gave you permission to do this?" June asked, but no one gave an answer and instead grabbed their weapons making it clear that opposing them would only end in confrontation.
She was fully aware that once she took a step outside her city, not even the support from all her fans would mean anything against cryptids or rogue hunters alike and decided to take a less direct approach and record anything she could from the distance.
"Incoming!" A male voice echoed in the distance as an humanoid cryptid moved towards the jouranist's van. The creature moved with an unnatural speed made only possible due to it scuttling on all fours like a spider.
The Dungeon Raiders opened fire on the spot, each bullet taking away a small chunk of flesh slowly reducing its mass as it drew near the van until nothing but a disembodied hand barely touched the glass.
"This area is not safe, please return to your city." Amy said apologetically though June wasn't ready to give up yet and she exited the van.
"I can help, I'm a heavenly rank hunter." She took a defensive stance with four cameras orbiting her from all angles as she took part on the culling of cryptids that crept from the crater. She moved around as she targeted cryptids with an unnecessarily big shotgun which she promptly discarded to engage in close combat.
Her movements were inefficient as she waved fists and legs around seemingly without purpose. She knew that cryptids would not appear on camera and by performing exaggerated movements she not only made it look as though her participation in the fight was greater, but it also made it easier for the CGI team to add special effects later.
Because of the unusual amount of beast rank cryptids trying to escape from what used to be a dungeon the Dungeon Raiders had their hands full and Amy decided to let her help not knowing that June's true purpose wasn't to kill cryptids, but to investigate the cause of the explosion.
"You have got to be fucking kidding me, what happened to all the gold!?" Nika appeared on the corner of the screen at a distance seemingly arguing with someone who was out of the frame.
Noticing this, the camera man used his telekinesis to move the cameras closer to the action taking care to keep them as far as possible from any cryptids. From a distance it looked as though the cameras were following June as she drew closer to Nika, though she was actually being led by them.
"I'm telling you, we can still get some money out of this... we just need to dig up a little." Uriel replied holding a cracked clay plate and the arguing became louder.
Uriel insisted on making a team to collect all the ancient artifacts inside the dungeon. He knew their market value was low if any, but to him they held a different kind of value. He could already picture his museum being decorated with all sorts of Anasazi trinkets, the same for his office and room.
"Uhm, guys, where is grampa?" Luna asked as she tugged on Uriel's sleeve in a pleading manner while pointing at the inside of the crater.
"He's dead, stop pestering me." Uriel snarled as he pushed Luna away.
"This can't be, it seems that poor girl lost her grampa in the explosion and those guys are just ignoring her. This is so wrong," June said as she cried on cue, then turned her attention to Mark who at that precise moment was crawling outside the dungeon with an old man on his back. "Look over there! It's things like these what makes me regain faith in humanity.
"Hey! Where do you think you're going!?" Uriel growled at a distance. "Stop right there!"
"I'm just... I'm... trying to save him." Upon hearing Uriel's voice Mark knew what was coming to him as he not only took the time to steal the legacy of the four families but was also trying to save the man who caused the entire ordeal.
Contrary to Uriel, though, he knew the journalist that just happened to be nearby, he also knew her trait and more importantly he knew how she would react if someone asked her for help. "Miss June, that guy is a psycho! Please save us." He begged at the camera trying his best to hide a smug grin that really wanted to come out.
'This guy knows what happened and he also knows my reputation...' June pondered as she saw Mark approach from one side and Uriel from the other.
"Space distortion, Recall skill!" June shouted as she reached for Mark's hand as they were covered in a purple light getting them out of harm's way.
