Chapter 372: Chapter 372: What a Talented Young Man
Ah Jiu arrived as scheduled, and Wufu personally stood at the main entrance to greet him, both exchanging a silent nod when their gazes met.
"I’ve been looking forward to your visit, Ninth Master, please come in." Wufu stepped aside with a playful gesture, inviting him in as if the previous formality had been merely an illusion.
Ah Jiu ascended the steps, followed by Xiao Li and others, as well as guards bearing various gifts.
Servants took care of the followers, guiding them to another hall for tea, while Wufu personally escorted Ah Jiu to the Floral Hall where guests were received.
They took their seats according to rank, and Qiu Ye served tea with Hongyu. Upon seeing Ah Jiu, she hesitated for a moment, but soon lowered her head, blushing as she poured tea.
Wufu caught this moment, her eyebrows raising slightly.
With Hongyu managing her affairs at home, and concerned about being a poor hostess, Madam Zhou had arranged for Qiu Ye to assist for the day’s hospitality.
Today, Ah Jiu was dressed with extreme elegance, clad in a long green robe with a precious purple jade belt at his waist, draped in a purple cape, and wearing a Purple gold crown atop his head. His long eyebrows extended to his temples, and the amber hue of his eyes displayed a commanding presence when they moved.
Seeing the undeniable air of nobility that seemed intrinsic to him, it was no wonder Qiu Ye was momentarily captivated. Even Hongyu beside her couldn’t stop staring at him.
Wufu coughed lightly and glanced indifferently at Hongyu, who quickly regained her composure and stood straighter.
"We don’t have any fine teas at home, just some common Pu’er tea bought from the store. Can you still drink it?" Wufu asked with a smile.
Ah Jiu believed she wasn’t lying, for the tea indeed had a poor flavor, but it was drinkable nonetheless.
"It’s alright. I’ve brought some good tea today. Next time I visit, there should be a better selection to enjoy," Ah Jiu remarked, setting down his teacup.
"No need to wait for next time. Let’s switch to the tea you’ve brought right now." Wufu told Qiu Ye, "Go and bring the new tea."
"Yes, Lady," Qiu Ye replied respectfully, taking her leave.
Mrs. Zhou arrived with Qiu Xiang, prompting Ah Jiu to stand up quickly.
"Ninth Master, I owe you thanks for your physician’s aid; it saved my life. With no man in our household, it’s been left to the boys to keep you company, for which I must apologize," Mrs. Zhou expressed her gratitude with a deep bow, her face earnest.
As per the custom that males and females over the age of seven should not sit together, it would have been improper for a lady or a madam to personally attend to a male guest, as per traditional protocol.
However, in their household, with only the mother and daughter as masters and belonging to a lesser standing, they had to make do amidst the urgency, subverting strict social rules. Hence, it was up to Wufu and the household servants to attend to the guests.
"Madam is too courteous. Lady Wu and I are acquaintances from the Jianghu; we’re all friends here, unconcerned with trivial formalities. Besides, you have done me the kindness of offering food," Ah Jiu replied modestly, offering a gesture of respect in return.
Observing that his demeanor seemed genuine and noting his distinguished attire and superior temperament, Mrs. Zhou couldn’t help but take a few more glances, finding him both pleasant to the eye and surprising.
Such a handsome fellow—all wonder whose son he is, to be raised so well.
Not daring to speculate further, as it would be impolite to do so with a guest present, Mrs. Zhou exchanged a few cordial words and then left with Qiu Xiang.
"It appears Mrs. Zhou has also recovered nicely," Ah Jiu commented, watching her walk away before turning to Wufu with a smile.
Wufu responded, "Bai Xiaobai’s medicine works well; my mother’s wound has already scabbed over. But speaking of him, why hasn’t he visited today?" She had been looking forward to giving him a piece of her mind.
"He went out to procure a couple of herbs and most likely won’t be back until just before the New Year."
Wufu acknowledged with "Oh" as silence fell upon the Floral Hall, creating an awkward quiet.
