Chapter 274: Chapter 274: Exchange of Favors

Shopkeeper Lin returned to the back hall, where Wufu was conversing with Zhu Zijun, holding in her hand a gold inlaid jade collar, pointing to a certain part of it explaining something to him while Zhu Zijun kept nodding, his expression one of sudden realization.

Shopkeeper Lin patiently waited nearby until Wufu handed the collar back to Zhu Zijun, and then he approached smiling, "I’ve been looking forward to your arrival. Shall we go to the East Wing for some tea?"

Zhu Zijun first gave him a bow, then cupped his hands towards Wufu in respect, and then left.

Following Shopkeeper Lin to the East Wing, Wufu sat down, took the tea he poured for her, and said, "Shopkeeper Lin, even with my arrival, I’m afraid I might disappoint you."

"It’s not made yet?" Shopkeeper Lin hastily inquired upon hearing her words.

Wufu nodded, "There have been quite a few things going on recently."

"I see, so you don’t have even the two small pieces?" Shopkeeper Lin also seemed to have anticipated her unfinished work, so his disappointment flashed by quickly.

He too was eager for the products of her handiwork, hence his impatience.

Wufu, rather embarrassed, said, "I’m truly sorry."

"Where’s the need for apologies? I’m the one who was too eager," Shopkeeper Lin hastily responded. "I also heard that you went to the county?"

"That’s right. I haven’t yet thanked you for the four-colored gift you sent," Wufu took a sip of her tea, stood up to give a bow, then continued, "And, regarding the Fourth Young Master from your family, now he’s the Lord County Magistrate of Huayang County."

Shopkeeper Lin’s eyes crinkled with a smile, "That is indeed true, and I never expected that our young master would get the position as the county magistrate here; it’s quite fortuitous."

Since Maofeng Town fell under Huayang’s jurisdiction, and now that their own young master had become the magistrate of Huayang County, they wouldn’t have to worry about local ruffians or hooligans disturbing their business. But just based on the reputation of the Wen Family alone, most of those with any sense would not dare to cause trouble, except for the truly blind ones.

"How old is your young master this year? He looks to be not yet of age, yet he’s already an official."

When Shopkeeper Lin spoke of Wen Congrui, his eyes gleamed as if the sun had burst forth within them, saying brightly, "Our young master turned eighteen this year."

"He became a magistrate at eighteen? Your young master must be quite capable," Wufu said with a teasing arch of her eyebrow.

"Naturally, our young master is a genius. It’s just that, due to health reasons, otherwise he would definitely have obtained a position last year instead of taking the family’s route," Shopkeeper Lin said with a look of regret, "Our young master is even said to be someone qualified to enter the Hanlin Academy!"

"Oh?"

Seeing Wufu’s curious expression, Shopkeeper Lin felt that he had spoken too much. He took a sip of tea and then asked in return, "Did you see our young master at the county?"

"Yes." Wufu continued when she saw he was reluctant to elaborate, "Speaking of which, I also happen to know Young Master Wen, no, I should say Lord Wen now. I will need Shopkeeper Lin to put in a few good words for me to the official in the future."

It is said that having connections in the court makes things easier. For ordinary people, even encountering a minor official is considered remarkable, not to mention meeting the county magistrate, when they’d be even more excited – especially to also know him personally.

Wufu was only speaking rhetorically and was not really trying to build a relationship. Having no backing is unworkable, but if there is one, it’s certainly better than none. After all, this is a world that regards imperial power and the hierarchy among nobles and the commoners.

"Miss, if you can carve out those jade pieces sooner, I believe our lord will regard you in a different light," Shopkeeper Lin laughed heartily.

"Shopkeeper Lin is trying to feed me a date to sweeten the deal," Wufu spoke as if it were a hardship, "Fine then, I will make sure to hurry up and finish them quickly."

"That would be wonderful!"

The two exchanged a smile.
