Chapter 270: Chapter 270: Daughter in Charge

Madam Zhou and her daughter had depended on each other for over a decade, and this was the first time Wufu had been away for so long. It was no wonder her mother missed and worried about her. After all, Wufu was still quite young, and with no news in several days, anyone would have thought something had happened to her.

After some comforting words, they unloaded everything from the carriage. Liu Jin then went to pay the coachman for driving the carriage.

Hongyu watched from the side, a strange feeling in her heart. What had changed about Liu Jin during this trip? She seemed to have gained something—what could it be?

Once everything was moved into the main house, Wufu saw the items piled up on the table and the floor, creating some clutter. Looking around at the house, it appeared even more cramped.

Their home was indeed too small for them. For instance, since Liu Jin had arrived, Hongyu was still sharing a room with mother and daughter, and though they were all women and it wasn’t a big deal, Wufu always felt uncomfortable.

It seemed that adding two more rooms was necessary; otherwise, as possessions accumulated, they would not even have space to set foot, and it would be inconvenient. She also wanted a room of her own.

"How did you buy so much stuff?" Madam Zhou asked as she looked at the heaps of items, feeling somewhat pained. Wufu had spent too much silver this time.

"Winter is approaching, so I bought some cotton and fabric. We need to make a few clothes to keep us warm, don’t we?" Wufu said with a smile. She then took out a small red box from the pile, opened it, and it was filled with silver ornaments.

She picked out a filigree silver bracelet and closed the box, handing it to Madam Zhou: "Mother, please choose from these jewelry pieces to wear on ordinary days."

Madam Zhou opened it and was dazzled by the shining silver. She picked up a silver hairpin with carved flowers, and praised, "This craftsmanship is really exquisite."

Though Wufu didn’t like wearing jewelry, her eye for choosing it was not bad. Naturally, she wouldn’t pick anything of low quality but chose eye-catching silver ornaments that were lively without losing a sense of generosity and steadiness.

"Wufu, how much silver has been spent on all these big and small items?" Madam Zhou asked as she held the box and glanced at the items in the house, filled with doubts. What exactly had her daughter done during her time away?

Before departing, Madam Zhou wanted to give Wufu some silver, but she didn’t accept it, saying she had enough on her. Madam Zhou didn’t insist as she knew what Wufu said was true, although she didn’t know exactly how much silver Wufu had earned, she was sure there was some saved up.

Madam Zhou didn’t take it either; a young lady should have some private silver. She understood that, and she also knew that Wufu took better care of their home than she did, as evidenced by the state of their lives these past few months.

"Mother, I didn’t waste much silver. This trip to the county town, I did a favor for someone and got a reward. That’s also why I returned late," Wufu explained with a smile.

Madam Zhou opened her mouth as if she wanted to ask what the favor was, but seeing the smile on Wufu’s face, she didn’t press further. She knew that Wufu wouldn’t say—her daughter was just like that, knowing well what should and should not be said.

"Nothing went wrong, right?" She changed the subject.

Wufu nodded and even twirled around: "Don’t I stand before you completely unharmed?"

Madam Zhou chuckled at her daughter’s clear and confident smile, but her eyes dimmed a touch. She sighed inwardly, blaming herself for her lack of capability, which forced her daughter to take on the responsibility of providing for the family.

Others had men earning livelihoods for their households, whereas her family had to depend on a daughter.

If only...

Madam Zhou didn’t allow her thoughts to continue. She just clenched the box in her hands and said, "You must be tired from your trip back from the county; go rest. Hongyu and I will take care of these things."

Wufu agreed with a nod.
