Chapter 262: Chapter 262 Outskilled
Wufu and her servant left the inn in high spirits, first storing their luggage at the hostel and then heading to the Silver Bank. They exchanged a silver note for one hundred taels, a fifty taels note, as well as some silver pieces and copper coins, to make settling bills more convenient.
A trip to the grocery store was necessary; they needed to bring back some food. And since the weather was already turning autumnal, they would also buy some coarse cloth and cotton to start preparing their winter clothes.
Wufu also visited the jewelry shop. She wasn’t fond of buying jewelry for herself but enjoyed looking—after all, she was versed in that field, especially jade ornaments. Feeling pleased, she bought some exquisite silver ornaments, planning to give one each to Madam Zhou and Hongyu.
While she was happy, the simple-minded Hoo Die was furiously complaining to his master, Ninth Master.
"That cunning fox, he’s just too deceitful! I think he’s afraid that I’ll get the reward, so he told me to stay on guard while he went to report to the officials and conveniently claimed the reward for himself," Hoo Die grumbled indignantly. "Too crafty, at such a young age, how can he be so cunning and sly?"
Wufu’s actions had greatly irked Hoo Die, who felt duped, especially by someone he deemed inferior.
Too crafty!
In pursuit of the Flower-Picking Thief, he had worked tirelessly, single-handedly, only to have someone else snatch the prize right from under him!
Utterly detestable!
Ah Jiu, Yuan Ye, and Su Luo all watched Hoo Die with astounded expressions.
"So, you’ve been played? Somebody else snatched your prey?" Su Luo asked, stunned.
Yuan Ye scoffed coldly, "It sounds more like he’s been double-crossed."
"I, I’ve been cheated, he was just too cunning!" Hoo Die protested, his face flushed with anger.
Ah Jiu snorted coldly, "You might as well admit your martial arts skills were inferior."
Hoo Die’s face slightly changed, and he knelt down.
Ah Jiu, expressionless, felt a throbbing headache coming on. It seemed that since he’d come out, the combat capability of his people had diminished significantly.
Now, someone unknown had managed to make a fool of Hoo Die.
Ah Jiu had no doubts about Hoo Die’s Kung Fu, but his intelligence was worrying. The opponent hadn’t harbored any ill intentions, which was lucky for Hoo Die. But if it had been an enemy spy, wouldn’t Hoo Die have fallen right into their trap?
When one person is compromised, it’s not just them at risk—it can have repercussions for many. If Hoo Die had such low vigilance, how many would he endanger?
Hoo Die wasn’t stupid; seeing Ah Jiu’s expression, he knew the gravity of his mistake.
Both Yuan Ye and Su Luo’s expressions weren’t too pleasant either. Hoo Die, one of their own, had been so thoroughly toyed with, and wasn’t that just like slapping them in the face?
But they also knew that it was Hoo Die’s own lack of vigilance that had led to this defeat; they couldn’t really blame anyone else, after all, it was a gamble.
"Master..." Hoo Die muttered, his lips trembling.
Ah Jiu made a vague gesture with his hand and rubbed his temple, asking, "Did he recognize you? And knows me too?"
Hoo Die stood up and said, "Yes. If it weren’t for that, I wouldn’t have believed him and gone with him."
"If you are inferior in skill, then admit it instead of making excuses," Ah Jiu said flatly.
Hoo Die sheepishly agreed, "Yes."
"Who is that person? Tell me more about him."
As Hoo Die described Wufu’s appearance and her martial arts techniques, he added, "The techniques were strange; I have no idea which faction they belong to."
However, Ah Jiu’s expression became strange as he looked at Hoo Die and asked, "Are you sure it was a lad?"
Hoo Die nodded emphatically, indeed, he was sure it was a young man.
"I see now where you’ve lost!" Ninth Master sneered, "You’re blind!"
What lad? Clearly, it was a young lady!
