Chapter 249: Chapter 249: Beauty Comes to Serve

The County Government Office—Wen Congrui had just set down the list of Child Students prepared to participate in this year’s academy exam and rubbed his swollen forehead.

A cup of strong tea was presented to him, and after taking a sip, Wen Congrui knit his brows a few times.

"What tea is this, brewed so strong?" Wen Congrui looked towards the young servant.

Nan Shan said, "Sir, I saw you were somewhat fatigued, so I specially brewed it stronger."

Wen Congrui glanced at him, then lowered his gaze to the case files in his hand, and spoke to Steward Chen sitting at the side table, "Steward Chen, any news about the strapping man with the fox mask?"

The day after that man had left, he had specially sent people to follow him, but they lost his trail.

Steward Chen hurriedly responded, "Sir, not yet." Yet in his heart, he muttered cynically—perhaps that man was just a swindler, possibly even the Flower-Picking Thief himself, long gone by now.

Wen Congrui’s brow furrowed once again, but he said no more.

Upon returning to the inner hall, Nan Shan brought Wen Congrui another bowl of decoction, placed it down, took out a blue-and-white porcelain bowl and a soup spoon, and carefully ladled out a bowlful of the decoction, which contained two golden strands of cordyceps.

"Young Master, please drink it while it’s hot—you have lost quite some weight recently," Nan Shan said respectfully as he handed over the bowl of soup.

Wen Congrui took it and set it down, then with a slight smile, he said, "Cordyceps again?"

How many times had he consumed cordyceps decoction these days?

"Cordyceps nourishes the body. I have sent a letter back home to ask for more," Nan Shan said with a pained expression. "To be honest, Young Master, if you’re to serve as an official in the provinces, you should go somewhere like Jiangnan, which is nurturing."

Wen Congrui took a sip of the soup and said, "There is no need to mention such things in the future. As of now, I am the magistrate of Huayang County. This position, whether it lasts three years or six, is immovable. Moreover, that is of no use."

"Yes," Nan Shan answered with a bow.

"It’s just that there are too few capable hands around here. I wonder when the people my father arranged will arrive." Wen Congrui picked up a handkerchief and daintily wiped his mouth.

Before Nan Shan could reply, someone from outside reported the arrival of people from the capital.

"Young Master, it might be the people from home," Nan Shan said with joy.

Wen Congrui nodded, "Go and meet them. They’ve traveled long and hard—let them rest first, freshen up, and it won’t be too late to come meet me later."

Nan Shan quickly agreed, "Don’t worry, Young Master, I will arrange everything."

As Wen Congrui waved his hand, Nan Shan headed to the door. Just as he was about to step out, he saw a beautiful woman with a melon seed face, almond eyes, rosy cheeks, and wearing a Phoenix and Peony Skirt hurriedly approaching.

Nan Shan paused, then turned back and said, "Young Master, Sister Lan Shu has also arrived."

Upon hearing this, Wen Congrui’s brow slightly wrinkled.

The woman called Lan Shu quickly stepped forward. Without immediately entering the room, she first asked Nan Shan, then called into the room, "Lan Shu seeks an audience with the Young Master."

After receiving Wen Congrui’s permission to enter, she walked in. Upon seeing the man seated beside the hall table, who had lost a great deal of weight, her eyes immediately reddened. She hastened forward and knelt down, "Lan Shu greets you, Young Master. You’ve lost weight. I came too late."

Looking up, her tears fell one by one, her gaze filled with affection and admiration for Wen Congrui.

Wen Congrui smiled, "You’ve worked hard. Stand up and let’s talk."

Seeing this, Nan Shan heaved a sigh of relief, feeling as if a weight had been lifted off his shoulders. With Sister Lan Shu’s arrival, the Young Master’s daily care and diet would be far more meticulously attended to, and he might even catch a chance to nap.

He just wondered how many people Sister Lan Shu had brought with her. Perhaps, he too would soon enjoy a taste of fortune?

Listening to the quiet conversation inside the room, Nan Shan walked away smiling—it was truly a fine day.
