Chapter 241: Chapter 241: The Heart is Cunning and Tricky

The Flower-Picking Thief case was the first one Wen Congrui faced after taking office, and it was a major one, as the number of victims had reached six, and the means were extremely brutal. As long as this case remained unsolved, the common people would be in a constant state of panic.

No matter if the Yamen Runners were deployed or a reward was offered, no one had actually captured the real Flower-Picking Thief. Instead, a number of petty thieves and robbers were caught, and now the cells of the Yamen were nearly full.

Wen Congrui was determined to crack this case and was about to send out an invitation to the famous hunter Tie An, Captain Tie, to come and help.

Now, here was another person claiming they could catch the Flower-Picking Thief?

Did everyone think he was idle, daring to toy with him?

Wen Congrui scoffed coldly and bellowed, "Guards, seize him!"

At that command, several Yamen Runners wielding wooden clubs charged out, surrounding Wufu.

Caught off guard by this show of force, Wufu was stunned but not in the least bit panicked.

Ha!

The Yamen Runners shouted as they lunged at Wufu.

Wufu chuckled coldly, moving as nimbly as a monkey—leaping up, then crouching low, and swiftly kicking his feet. Not only did he dodge the descending clubs, but he also snatched one and counterattacked with a flurry of sweeps.

"Ah!"

"Ow!"

"Ouch!"

Wen Congrui, his face an ashen hue, watched the Yamen Runners wailing on the floor, then sprang to his feet, glaring at the fox-like youngster standing in the center of the hall, propping himself up on the club, catching his breath just slightly.

Wufu raised his head to look at Wen Congrui and coldly asked, "What is the meaning of this, My Lord?"

"I suspect that you are the Flower-Picking Thief and now intend to arrest and interrogate you," Wen Congrui hummed coldly.

Wufu let out a derisive laugh. "So that’s all there is to Lord Wen. No wonder the Flower-Picking Thief is still at large."

Hearing the mockery in her words, Wen Congrui’s facial expression grew even colder.

"While it is not wrong for a lord to be wary and mistrustful, excessive suspicion can be too much and quite disheartening," Wufu said, standing erect. "I am wholeheartedly trying to eliminate a menace for the people, and yet the Lord refuses to appreciate it. Fine then."

She turned to leave.

"If you are truly intent on eliminating a menace for the people, why are you afraid to show your true face?" Wen Congrui retorted sarcastically. "Unless, of course, you are here to gather information for that bandit?"

Wufu laughed heartily. "From the very first murder case to now, it has been over a month since the Flower-Picking Thief was discovered, and the Lord hasn’t caught anyone. If I were that thief, what would I have to fear?"

Her words were not far from outright mocking Wen Congrui’s incompetence.

"How audacious!" A secretary fiercely shouted in reprimand.

Wufu didn’t even glance at him and continued, "As for my true face? There are so many people wandering in Jianghu; Green Forest, Jianghu and the Government Office have always kept to their own paths. I am just working for a reward; what does it matter to the Lord how I look?"

Her demeanor, suggesting the Lord might be foolish, was infuriating.

Without waiting for Wen Congrui’s response, Wufu added, "Or does the Lord want to see my true face so that, once I’ve solved the case, you can backstab me? Not only withholding my reward but also painting my portrait to post on the bulletin board, declaring me the Vast Ocean Bandit? Then, I would have to face the ’Heavenly Net’ of the entire world."

Her words were accusatory and harsh, spoken as if they were the truth.

"You think too highly of yourself," Wen Congrui said, calming down but with a turbulence swirling in his eyes.

He silently sized up the sly youngster before him. This fox-like character spoke and acted so cunningly, yet something about him seemed off.

But what exactly that strangeness was, no one could quite put their finger on it.

"Are you here to truly capture the Flower-Picking Thief? May I ask for the young hero’s name?" Wen Congrui flung his sleeve and sat back down.

Nothing was more important than capturing the Flower-Picking Thief.
