Chapter 234: Chapter 234 Intentions
"Master, it’s that Miss Wufu,"
At the window of the private room on the second floor of the teahouse, a boy dressed as a young servant respectfully addressed the man who was fiddling with a white piece in his hand without taking his eyes off the chessboard.
Clack.
The white piece landed on the chessboard. When the man looked up and saw Wufu, he appeared slightly taken aback.
The master and servant were none other than Ah Jiu and his young servant, Yuan Ye.
"Master, should I invite her up?" Yuan Ye inquired.
Wufu and her company had already walked far off, and after Ah Jiu pondered for a moment, he said, "Have Su Luo follow them and see."
Yuan Ye complied, walked to the doorway, and gave a few quiet instructions; shortly after, someone followed behind Wufu and her company.
In less than half a Shichen, Su Luo returned to the teahouse to report, "They are staying at Dongsheng Inn, just the two of them, in a mid-sized room."
At that moment, Ah Jiu had taken a black piece in hand and was rubbing it, staying silent for a long while.
Su Luo looked at Yuan Ye, who shook his head, simply waiting for Ninth Master’s instructions.
"Arrange for someone to see what they’re up to," Ah Jiu said as he placed a piece, finally giving the order.
Su Luo bowed and went off to make arrangements without further mention.
"Has Hoo Die still not found any leads these past few days?" Ah Jiu asked again.
Yuan Ye knew what he was referring to and said, "Not completely certain yet, but we’re getting some clues."
Ah Jiu’s expression turned a bit grim as he said, "I see his efficiency in handling matters is diminishing."
Yuan Ye didn’t dare to respond, silently mourning for Ah Jiu in his heart.
"Master, should we call for Liu Zhou and the others?" Yuan Ye asked.
By the Master’s side were several guards. Aside from Su Luo and Hoo Die, there were Liu Zhou, Shi Shan, and a few others, who were absent for various reasons.
"No need," Ah Jiu asked, "Where has Xiao Li gone to?"
When that name was mentioned, Yuan Ye’s stern face softened a bit, but he still rigidly replied, "He’s in Yunnan. If he travels by fast horse, he should arrive in half a month."
Xiao Li was another of the Master’s young servants, a treasure and the life of the party. Now absent because the Master had sent him home to celebrate Old Madam’s birthday, not only the Master but even Yuan Ye himself was missing the boy.
Ah Jiu gave a grunt in acknowledgment and continued to play chess with gravitas, playing against himself.
...
Wufu opened the window of her room, pretending to take in the scenery as she scanned the street back and forth. She didn’t notice anything unusual, which she found peculiar.
She should not be wrong; when she had returned earlier, it felt as though someone was tailing them.
Now, having looked around, she saw no one lurking or spying, the sensation had vanished. Could she have been mistaken?
"Miss, what’s wrong?" Liu Jin asked as he noticed the doubtful expression on Wufu’s face.
"It’s nothing," Wufu thought for a moment, her eyes darting around, and said, "The street we came back on, the first shop, they sell seeds, candies, and cakes, right?"
Liu Jin nodded.
Wufu tossed him a purse and said, "Take this purse and go down to play, just around this street. Visit every shop and buy some snacks to eat."
Liu Jin caught the purse and waited for her to elaborate. If the Miss said so, there must be a reason she wanted him to wander aimlessly.
A sense of excitement welled up inside him, the Miss must have some task in mind for him.
Wufu smiled and instructed, "Just enjoy yourself, but also keep an eye out to see if anyone is following you. Do you know what to do? Don’t make it too obvious and give yourself away."
Liu Jin’s eyes widened as he nodded vigorously, "I understand; I’ll just go out to play and shop."
Wufu smiled and nodded, "Go on, I have some matters to attend to as well."
Liu Jin repeated the plan once more, then cheerfully set off.
