Chapter 231: Chapter 231 Discuss a Price
After the Mid-Autumn festival, Wufu thought about making another trip to the county city to pick up the Hoo Die knife she had ordered from Li’s.
However, this time, she planned to stay for a few days, so she packed a small bundle with a few days’ worth of clean clothes and informed Madam Zhou.
With something on her mind, Wufu didn’t plan to take Liu Jin with her. Madam Zhou was extremely concerned; it wasn’t right for a young woman to be without an escort, especially since she was planning to stay in the city for several days, where she’d have no one to look out for her in case something happened.
Seeing Madam Zhou’s insistence, Wufu had no choice but to bring Liu Jin along, thinking that if she really needed to do something, she could just leave him at the inn.
Hongyu was somewhat unhappy to see Wufu still taking Liu Jin with her, but her mood brightened when Wufu mentioned she would bring back marshmallow for her.
Around the same time as their last trip, Wufu and Liu Jin reached the city gates of the county. Upon entering, she instinctively looked at the notice board by the gate.
At that glance, her eyes lit up – the reward money for catching the Flower-Picking Thief had risen to five hundred taels of silver.
Wen Si is really splashing out – must be getting desperate!
Liu Jin caught the gleam in his mistress’s eye and was momentarily stunned, an incredible thought swiftly dawning on him.
His mistress couldn’t possibly be contemplating catching the Flower-Picking Thief, could she?
"Let’s go, we’ll settle down at Dongsheng Inn first, then head to Li’s," Wufu said with a flourish of her hand, leading Liu Jin away.
Upon arriving at the inn, Liu Jin saw that the innkeeper was the same one they had met before and stepped ahead of Wufu to approach the counter.
Caught off guard, Wufu didn’t mind and followed two steps behind him.
"Miss, a mid-range room?" Liu Jin asked, looking back at Wufu for confirmation and, seeing her nod, turned to the innkeeper, "We’d like to book a mid-range room."
Being shorter than the counter, he had to stand on tiptoes to speak with the innkeeper.
Amused, Wufu crossed her arms and watched from the side.
"One mid-range room, five hundred and fifty wen per night," the innkeeper said after glancing at Liu Jin.
"Innkeeper, we had stayed here just a few days ago. Since we’re returning, we’re practically regulars. We plan to stay for several days this time, so could you give us a discount?" Liu Jin chatted smilingly, leaning on the counter’s edge, "Next time we come to the county city, we’ll stay at your establishment again."
Well now, he’d started bargaining.
Wufu raised an eyebrow and didn’t offer any help; she watched from the sidelines, curious whether he could secure a discount on his own.
Liu Jin didn’t disappoint her; with his skillful bargaining and flattery, he actually managed to get a fifty wen discount – they got the room for five hundred wen.
"You’ve got a silver tongue, boy. You’d make a great businessman if you ever took it up," the innkeeper said with a laugh as he handed the key to Liu Jin.
"You flatter me, innkeeper," Liu Jin replied with a beaming smile, taking the key.
A thought flickered in Wufu’s mind.
The innkeeper then had an attendant show them to their room. Once inside with the door closed and their bundle put down, Wufu asked, "What made you think of negotiating the price?"
"I figured we’re staying for several days, not just one, and usually you can get a discount for a longer stay. Save where we can, right?" Liu Jin said with a grin, then asked cautiously, "Miss, did I overstep?" He had noticed that Wufu rarely haggled and felt a bit sorry for her, prompting him to negotiate the price first.
"No, you did very well," Wufu smiled, intending to ruffle his hair, but on second thoughts, and with some embarrassment, she withdrew her hand and said, "Let’s wash up before we go to Li’s."
Liu Jin happily agreed, relieved and somewhat joyful for the praise from his mistress.
