Chapter 629: Chapter 602: He Bore it All for Her
"I’m leaving first, goodbye," Cherish Turner whispered softly, walking up to William.
"Goodbye," Hailey Griffith turned and responded in a hurry.
William didn’t mind William Griffith’s indifference and simply held the umbrella over Cherish. The two of them shared an umbrella and turned to leave. Their silhouettes, one tall, one short, looked remarkably compatible in that moment. However, this scene of them walking side by side was like a stab in the chest for William Griffith, causing a painful burning sensation in his eyes.
William Griffith, holding his umbrella, also turned and walked away but in the opposite direction.
Yannis Griffith frowned, speculating, "Hailey, what do you think is the relationship between this man and Cherish Turner?"
Hailey Griffith’s gaze drifted between the two directions, not paying much attention to his question. "All I know is that Sister Cherish previously stayed in the United Kingdom for two years. They might be friends she made there," she answered.
"Friends?" Yannis Griffith sneered, "I hope that’s all they are!"
Hailey Griffith gave him a sideways glance, "What’s it to you? Why are you always so nosy?"
"Why wouldn’t it concern me? If Cherish Turner were to fall for the green-eyed man, what will happen to our elder brother? And what about me? I still planned to return to France, I don’t want to take over the company!" Having been calculating for a while, Yannis Griffith certainly didn’t want his plans derailed.
"I don’t know either. Anyway, I won’t be taking over the Griffith company. Once all of this is over, I will return to Australia with Edward Smith," she replied.
Yannis Griffith looked at her—there were some words concerning Sam Turner and the past he still hadn’t spoken.
Some people, even after meeting, would not end up together.
In the silent world, only the sound of the rain could be heard.
During the peak hours after work, the roads were generally congested. The rain only made the traffic worse, but it certainly boosted business for taxis. Sitting inside the car, as raindrops hit the window, smudging the glass with blurry water droplets, it was hard to clearly see the scenery outside. The air was also filled with moisture. William casually said, "I came to Haicheng to attend a medical research study; it will take about three to four days. Will that inconvenience you? Is that okay with you?"
"No problem, Yi Xi is out. If she comes back, I can just share a room with her," Cherish Turner softly responded.
Upon hearing this, William laughed as if he was reminded of something. As his hearty voice slowly echoed in her ears, Cherish Turner sat quietly clutching her small suitcase and listened. Water dripped from her jacket onto her clothes, but she didn’t seem to notice.
Having stopped at a red traffic light, the taxi came to a halt. A few cars behind, a black Maserati was following closely.
As the light changed to green, the cars continued to move.
At Cherry Blossom Garden, the taxi pulled over and switched on the "vacant" sign. A man and a woman got out of the taxi. The man quickly ran around the car to hold the umbrella over the woman. As they walked in silence, sharing that one umbrella, they moved toward the apartment complex. The Maserati immediately followed and stopped diagonally across the street. Unable to resist, William Griffith trailed them with his umbrella.
He watched them walk side by side, watched them enter the apartment building together. He stood outside the building, looking up at the twelfth floor. This was her home. A place he had once visited but could no longer enter, now occupied by another man. She, too, was possessed by another man.
The rain continued to fall in sheets, not seeming to land on the ground but instead seeping into his heart.
William Griffith didn’t know what he was doing, but he kept standing there. Perhaps he was waiting to see if the man would leave. He stood until his feet were numb and until his hands no long felt the umbrella in his grasp. As his grip loosened, the umbrella dropped to the ground. As nightfall descended, the lights in the apartments flickered on the horizon. New faces continued to come and go in the building, all unfamiliar and unknown.
On the second window of the eighth floor, the lights were turned on, someone was cooking dinner.
The rain washed the world clean, but how could it cleanse the scars on his heart?
He let himself get drenched in the rain, listening to the irregular beating of his heart. After a long while, he finally turned and left the neighborhood to return to his car.
Lighting a cigarette, plumes of white smoke rose.
Past midnight, he was finally ready to admit that she no longer belonged to him.
At eight in the morning, several shareholders received a call from Daniel Peacock. It was about an issue with a deficit in the company’s internal funds and the real culprit behind this had been found. Upon receiving the call, Old Lee and others immediately rushed to the Griffith headquarters. As they walked into the meeting room, Daniel Peacock standing with his back turned. His tall figure cast a shadow in the light.
