Cherish Turner didn’t look at William, yet said the words he feared the most: “I truly wish, I had never met you, never loved you.”

At her words, William froze suddenly and even Mother Goodman shivered at her lady’s utterance.

To talk about it now was like opening an old wound. With worry, Mother Goodman wanted to step in and mediate, but before she could, William issued an implacable command –

“Everyone out!”

“Sir… Miss is frail right now, you must not overstep!”

Mother Goodman protested, but William didn’t listen. Cherish kept her eyes closed all the time, indifferent to whatever he was going to do next. It couldn’t get any worse than this, she thought.

“Get out!”

At his barked command, Mother Goodman trembled, took one last worried look at Cherish, and, unable to defy William’s order, left hastily with the doctor.

Cherish felt a pain spreading all over her body, her every breath causing pain. But what hurt even more was her heart.

William held her in his arms, in a strange contradiction, wishing to meld her into his bones and blood. Yet, he also feared genuinely hurting her.

At this moment, William had completely lost sense of how to treat Cherish, often losing control and making the wrong decisions.

In front of him, Cherish felt deeply humiliated.

But that was her nature; sometimes she was compliant like a kitten, at other times, prickly like a hedgehog.

Such a nature made her vulnerable, yet, in front of him, she accepted her disadvantage.

“I’m sorry then, even if you’re interested today, I’m not capable of entertaining you! Look at me, sighing and in pain, you’ll probably lose your appetite seeing me like this.” She gritted her teeth, and despite despising herself for it, she spoke these stinging words. She intended to hurt him, yet her words seemed to hurt her equally.
