Chapter 983: Chapter 984: Dou Yanlan’s Judgment
"How many points do you think he can score?"
Seeing in the surveillance that Qi Chen and his group had left, and after Feng Yuan had disappeared again, the man turned to the Commander and asked, to which the other pondered for a moment before responding,
"His friend can score thirty points, but as for the others, zero."
"Yes, it’s a shame that the special assessment’s maximum extra points are only thirty, otherwise I would really like to give him forty-two."
"Why?"
Turning his head to look at the Commander, the man smiled and said,
"Although there’s no concrete evidence, I suspect that he might even detect an attack involving ’Spatial Concealment’, although he can’t maintain this state continuously. But on the battlefield, this ability..."
Their greatest fear was those assassinations, since the Beastmaster is a big vulnerability for most Beast Tamers, and if a Beastmaster was killed on the battlefield, it was hard to say what those Spirit Beasts, who had lost their dear friends, would do. Although it was highly possible that they would temporarily obey commands from their comrades, there would always be some who lost their sanity and relentlessly pursued those responsible, even potentially leading them into traps.
"I don’t think our current situation is so grave that we need them on the field."
The Commander calmly watched the surveillance and spoke, believing that they could fend off the enemies without needing to rely on those students who hadn’t undergone professional training.
"Cotton!"
Dou Yanlan abruptly stopped in her tracks, vigilantly looking around. Cotton shook her body and scanned the surroundings. A breeze blew, causing the lush green grass to wave, and suddenly, Cotton’s fur bristled, and with a meow, she unleashed black lightning around her, but everything remained eerily calm.
"How could there be such an assessment?"
Dou Yanlan furrowed her brows, feeling uneasy despite the normalcy around her. Unlike Qi Chen, she couldn’t detect where the hidden danger was coming from.
"That guy went a bit too far with leaking the quiz."
The Commander, seeing Dou Yanlan’s reaction, spoke somewhat displeased. They naturally had investigated Feng Yuan’s social relationships and knew well that Dou Yanlan was also his friend. Seeing her reaction, it was evident she had accessed the assessment content beforehand, otherwise how could she detect the anomaly? Unless she was like Qi Chen, but was that possible?
"Not exactly. She doesn’t know exactly what it is; she is purely guessing based on intuition that there might be a stealth attack."
The man observed Dou Yanlan’s reaction and looked at the Commander, who appeared incredulous, and said,
"Let’s not say anything else, but it’s like General Chang and his team. Although they don’t know what it is, they have a nearly intuitive sense of danger."
"Of course, except for you."
The man’s mouth slightly curled upwards as he added, making the Commander blush. That sense of crisis was indeed an ability most Commanders possessed, but unfortunately, even though he was a Commander, he did not have it.
"Cough, since you say so, let’s assume he didn’t leak the questions to her."
"Why would there be an anti-stealth attack assessment? Isn’t that something meant for commanders or certain specialized professions?"
Dou Yanlan muttered to herself, somewhat puzzled, while her teammates looked at each other, completely at a loss. An anti-stealth attack assessment? They had never heard of such a thing. Was it possible that Dou Yanlan was mistaken? Unlikely, given her capabilities were recognized by them. At least, it wasn’t likely she had misunderstood something this important.
"It looks like you all are also unaware. An unexpected assessment? This probably won’t affect our scores."
Dou Yanlan quickly analyzed the situation while also slightly relaxing. If it really counted towards their official scores, there would be very few people who could achieve high marks, given the rarity of passing such a stealth attack assessment.
"Do your best."
Dou Yanlan glanced around and contemplated having Cotton release the mist when suddenly another examinee seemed to sense something. His Spirit Beast quickly emitted a cloud of black smoke; however, contrary to everyone’s expectations, a shadow, seemingly unaffected by the smoke, charged straight in. Moments later, as the smoke cleared, the examinee lay on the ground.
Seeing this, the other examinees heightened their vigilance, but alas, the shadow continued to flash about, harvesting examinees relentlessly. Dou Yanlan looked back at her teammates and said,
"Shall we do something crazy?"
Although confused, her teammates nodded. They were only required to follow the examinee’s orders as long as they weren’t violating any rules or threatening personal safety, so they didn’t object. Dou Yanlan then glanced at the continuously flickering shadow and sneered,
"Cotton, Nether Cross!"
"This is just... too crazy..."
Feng Yuan, speechless, watched Nether Cross pacing back and forth near the Gate of Netherworld, talking to himself. He hadn’t expected Dou Yanlan to play such a card. Could this really thwart the enemy? That was nonsense! Still, he couldn’t actually risk the examinees’ safety with a stealth attack, especially if an accident causing Nether Cross to charge into the Netherworld happened—it could be dangerous since Agunas and Veronia weren’t around, and he couldn’t contact Long Boduo for help either.
"How... do you score this?"
Seeing Dou Yanlan’s move, the Commander believed her team hadn’t leaked the questions. Strictly speaking, this move had no practical combat significance; it merely exploited the rules of the examination. But to say she didn’t deserve points—she had clearly stopped Feng Yuan’s stealth attack.
"Let’s see what follows; I believe she won’t give up so easily."
The man spoke in an inexplicable tone, his eyes glued to the monitor, Dou Yanlan’s move had certainly taken him by surprise—it was a complete gamble that the examiners would prioritize safety.
"Cotton! Charge up and release!"
Seeing the black bird rushing towards her, Dou Yanlan shouted coldly. Although she didn’t know what the opponent was planning, when dealing with shadowy hunters, keeping anything suspicious at bay was the best way to protect oneself.
Only a few other examinees managed to escape Feng Yuan’s first round of stealth attacks. Seeing the anomaly in the sky, they quickly erected Barriers. Unlike Dou Yanlan, they misjudged the situation, thinking Feng Yuan was an enemy from an enemy state aiming to launch a stealth attack to kill them, so they simply wanted to hold out until reinforcements arrived.
"Fools!"
A black bird pierced through a Barrier and rushed to an examinee’s side. The next moment, Feng Yuan swapped places with the black bird, his dagger stroking the examinee who then collapsed paralyzed; Feng Yuan cast a glance at the man and coldly uttered a word before vanishing again.
Dou Yanlan’s gaze sharpened. She hadn’t expected the examiner to be Feng Yuan. During his previous attack, his movements were so fast that she couldn’t clearly see him, but after breaking through the Barrier, although Feng Yuan was quick, it still took some time, allowing Dou Yanlan and the other examinees to see him clearly.
"Damn it! Why would there be such an examination!"
Although the other examinees couldn’t recognize Feng Yuan, his examiner’s uniform let them realize what was happening. Feng Yuan, lurking in concealment, didn’t care what they thought. After dealing with each one after another, he veiled his form and, looking up at Nether Cross in the sky, muttered softly,
"Do you really think this will stop others?"
A faint smile broke on his face as he suddenly lunged with his dagger towards where Dou Yanlan was.
"I didn’t expect the examiner to be you."
Dou Yanlan left these words behind as her figure gradually faded. Watching the fading Dou Yanlan and Cotton, Feng Yuan, pressing a hand to his forehead, felt a headache coming on. He had just used Xiao Ji’s power to swiftly increase his speed and reach Dou Yanlan before Cotton reacted, but she’d already prepared the Art of the Doppelganger in anticipation.
Glancing at those soldiers, Feng Yuan sighed, borrowing strength from Xiao Ji to toss below, where several black vines shot up from the ground, catching the soldiers before they could react, quickly laying them on the ground as Feng Yuan fell straight down, disappearing just before making contact with the ground.
"Can even go invisible? Now this gets interesting."
The Commander’s interest piqued upon witnessing the scene. Feng Yuan’s stealth attack potential was unexpectedly strong, but he hadn’t anticipated that the girl could also turn invisible. Whether Feng Yuan could discover her remained unknown.
"No use, she will definitely be found; he just wasn’t serious before. However, it’ll complicate the scoring if he gets too serious."
The man ruffled his hair, explaining. If Feng Yuan went all out with one-hit knockouts, there was simply no way to score it—after all, it was commonly accepted that his skills had reached Legendary Level. Which of these examinees could withstand a blow from a Legendary Level?
