Chapter 966: Chapter 967: Hidden Truths

Although the manager was somewhat skeptical of Feng Yuan’s explanation, he didn’t inquire further. After all, it was Feng Yuan’s own affair, and he wasn’t in a position to question it. He scratched his head after confirming the needs of the Spirit Beasts with Veronia and said,

"It seems quite complicated, there are all sorts of environments..."

"Let’s summarize it. Actually, if we stick to the environments commonly found in the city, there shouldn’t be too much of a problem, since if they didn’t like the city environment, they wouldn’t choose to stay here."

"However, some are just too much, and it’s probably best to leave them alone."

Feng Yuan, somewhat speechless, said he couldn’t quite understand the Spirit Beasts that hoped for weird shops—clearly, the aesthetic of Spirit Beasts and humans were different. Why would they fancy those dusty little shops? Hearing Feng Yuan’s words, the manager gave an awkward smile.

He hadn’t expected some of the Spirit Beasts to be hooligans. Although it seemed unlikely, Feng Yuan couldn’t help wondering if there were any bizarre reincarnations among those Spirit Beasts? Agunas, flicking its tail in silence, said,

"Don’t bother with those guys. Most of them are influenced by their original living environments. They probably don’t even realize that their words might lead to misunderstandings."

Agunas seemed to have some understanding of those Spirit Beasts, guessing that with their intelligence, they probably didn’t grasp the actual meanings of those words. However, that also meant that these guys must have been in long-term contact with humans, but why did they end up as Stray Spirit Beasts? Could it be that they were deliberately abandoned?

Thinking this, Agunas’ eyes flashed fiercely. Seeing Agunas flipping through a book rapidly, Feng Yuan curiously asked,

"What are you doing?"

"I’m figuring out who taught them this stuff and then abandoned them!"

Agunas, somewhat angry, said as Feng Yuan, scratching his head, watched the fiery Agunas feeling helpless; he found that the other party was always too impulsive when it involved Spirit Beasts.

"Maybe they didn’t mean to abandon them?"

Feng Yuan ventured, as Agunas glared at Feng Yuan and said discontentedly,

"Do you believe that? They are not strong; do you think the accident you mentioned would happen?"

"Really not calm enough."

Veronia remarked, sweeping a glance at Agunas before turning to a floral-mouthed canine Spirit Beast, scratching its neck while murmuring something. After a while, she turned to the red-faced Agunas and said,

"What do you think?"

Agunas didn’t respond but held his book and turned away, refusing to look at Veronia. Feng Yuan curiously looked toward Veronia and asked,

"What did you just say to it?"

"Nothing much, just asked where it learned those things from and then..."

"It said it was from a man who often feeds it, who spoke of that place like it was heaven, and it wanted to experience it too."

After hearing Veronia’s explanation, Feng Yuan covered his face, speechless,

"Which guy did this... Treating them like stray cats? Saying whatever they please..."

"Can’t help it, they meant well, it’s just that their approach was a bit..."

The manager said with a rueful laugh, surprised that these messy and improper suggestions actually arose from people carelessly chatting while feeding the Spirit Beasts. He harbored no strong ill feelings toward these people, for the city didn’t provide as abundant food supplies as the wild did for the Spirit Beasts.

Besides, even the wildlife domains had limits on the number of Spirit Beasts that could survive there, and the number in the city’s Stray Spirit Beasts had long exceeded that limit. Although various external service departments in Maomu City were feeding these Stray Spirit Beasts, there were still many they couldn’t reach. In such cases, the kind-hearted feeders could prevent those Spirit Beasts from taking unfortunate actions due to delays or missed meals.

"So, we can open up the food supplies here, right?"

Feng Yuan surveyed the park area, and the other party nodded, saying,

"Indeed, we didn’t do so earlier only because it wasn’t appropriate."

After all, previously those service institutions helped with feeding, and one couldn’t expect major places like libraries to place heaps of Spirit Beast Food at their doors; not only would it look bad, but it could also easily cause trouble, especially if someone decided to let their own Beast Tamer eat the Spirit Beast Food—then you really couldn’t say they were in the wrong.

Additionally, the library itself was fine, but it was unsuitable to feed Stray Spirit Beasts at the entrances of other departments for an extended period. Therefore, everyone agreed on congregating at a single location to provide them with food.

"How come you’re here?"

Upon hearing Ye Hanlei’s somewhat surprised voice, Feng Yuan turned around curiously and asked,

"Didn’t Liao Yu tell you?"

"No, I didn’t bump into him."

Ye Hanlei said somewhat embarrassedly as Feng Yuan glanced at her suspiciously,

"Did you come here... specifically to see them?"

He still understood Liao Yu well; it was unlikely for him to ditch work during office hours to see these Spirit Beasts, but as for Ye Hanlei... Although she was usually calm, even Agunas had his moments of impulse, so it wasn’t particularly strange for her.

As for whether she was on a mission like Liao Yu? Feng Yuan was certain that was not the case. The Special Duty Team wasn’t sufficiently staffed to dispatch many people for such minor matters, and if not for the fact that this was a trial area, everyone would be more cautious, and the Special Duty Team wouldn’t even arrange for a patrol here.

"I was nearby handling a case, so I took the opportunity to check how they are doing."

Ye Hanlei said openly, well aware that Feng Yuan had likely guessed the truth; there was no need for secrecy as she wasn’t actually skipping work.

Seeing her play with a cat, Feng Yuan crouched down to tease a Dog-Type Spirit Beast nearby and asked,

"Do you often feed them too?"

Hearing Feng Yuan’s question, while playing with the Cat-Type Spirit Beast, Ye Hanlei responded,

"Yes, I think they’re more like companions to our city’s residents..."

Remembering the shadow that rushed toward her during the fire, a smile appeared on Ye Hanlei’s face. Feng Yuan touched the Dog-Type Spirit Beast, stood up, and embraced the slightly upset Xiao Ji, saying,

"Indeed, although they roam the city, they might not ignore us in times of need."

Ye Hanlei shook her head with a smile and released Xiao Ji, while Feng Yuan stretched lazily and said,

"I’ll be heading off; I just went out for a stroll today, and I didn’t expect to discover such a place."

Ye Hanlei looked at Feng Yuan somewhat helplessly and said,

"We didn’t plan to hide this place, but after all, it’s a trial area, and it wouldn’t be right to widely advertise it."

If it succeeded, it would be fine. However, if any problems arise, they would likely face much criticism; that’s the reason they hadn’t advertised it. Plus, the entire city’s new plans were still not finalized, and whether to develop a Stray Spirit Beast Paradise was still under consideration.

If they started advertising now and an accident occurred, it would be difficult to explain.

"That’s true. I have to leave now; I originally wanted to help you with the case, but Liao Yu doesn’t seem to agree,"

Feng Yuan said with a mischievous smile, seeing him grin cheekily, Ye Hanlei said helplessly,

"We’re still managing at the moment. As for you, you should be careful lately. It seems the Divine Beast Hall wants to target you."

Agunas narrowed his eyes and spoke in a low voice,

"Are they daring to come?"

"Probably not that foolish, right?"

Feng Yuan was skeptical. Those guys, if they had any wit, would realize what consequences attacking him would bring; they shouldn’t dare to attack him again. The first time he hadn’t pursued them much, but if they tried again, did they really think he was easy to provoke?

"I’m not sure; the information we received is just like this, notified by the Alliance. But... just be cautious, we aren’t sure what they really intend."

If Ye Hanlei hadn’t bumped into Feng Yuan, she hadn’t planned to mention this matter. In fact, she suspected that the Alliance might have deliberately exaggerated the message. The Divine Beast Hall otherwise wouldn’t be so unwise to provoke Feng Yuan with little to gain.
