Chapter 963: Chapter 964: The Square
"What are you up to now?"
Liao Yu eyed Feng Yuan warily as he spoke. Seeing Feng Yuan appear at the Special Duty Team gave him a headache; he knew that guy showing up uninvited meant nothing good. Dissatisfied, Liao Yu glanced at Feng Yuan, who said,
"Can’t I come and help you? Why are you looking at me like that?"
"We can handle it on our own, no need to trouble you."
Liao Yu answered very decisively. He certainly didn’t want Feng Yuan causing a fuss; he had noticed Feng Yuan’s increasingly troublesome antics lately. Who knew what would happen if he offered to help?
"Ugh, why the look?"
Feng Yuan muttered somewhat displeased. Agunas glanced at Feng Yuan, who wouldn’t have reacted this way if it weren’t for the commotion he had caused recently. Seeing that Liao Yu really didn’t want his interference, Feng Yuan shrugged his shoulders and turned to leave. Watching him go, Liao Yu breathed a sigh of relief, but then felt a bit guilty.
After all, Feng Yuan had indeed helped them quite a bit before. Wasn’t he being somewhat too harsh now?
"Yo, a team competition?"
As he passed the square, Feng Yuan curiously eyed the fenced-off area temporarily set up as a battleground, Agunas glanced at him and said without words,
"You’re not planning on picking a fight, are you?"
"How could I? Just think it looks fun, that’s all. If it were a real fight... probably not."
Shaking his head, Feng Yuan said while looking at Xiao Ji. He did have some sense of propriety; the place was not meant for a proper battleground to begin with, and it wasn’t strong enough to withstand the destructive resistance of a Spirit Beast Ultimate Skill, let alone their attack power that exceeded the limits the venue could handle.
Although he wasn’t concerned about money, he wasn’t going to waste it either. Veronia looked at a wall comprised of vines and flowers nearby, and asked with some confusion,
"What’s going on over there? Why set up all these things?"
"A plant maze? That’s quite unusual around here."
Feng Yuan commented with some astonishment. He had initially thought it was part of the landscaping of the square, but on closer inspection, it wasn’t. The spot was supposed to be a large lawn grid, and surprisingly, it had been turned into a plant maze.
Seeing that Xiao Ji and the others seemed interested, Feng Yuan suggested,
"Shall we take a look? No idea who’s got the clout to occupy such a large patch of land in the square for this."
He guessed that someone must have rented the space for this purpose, otherwise the square’s management wouldn’t take such a large section of the property and turn it into a plant maze. In his view, the original lawn was much better than any plant maze.
Unfortunately, the reality was quite the opposite. Seeing the security guards freely coming and going as well as patrolling the square, Feng Yuan couldn’t help feeling puzzled. What were they trying to do by setting this up here?
"So that’s it."
Seeing the wild Spirit Beast scurrying below, Feng Yuan finally understood why there was such an awkward installation at this location in the square. The areas of the plant maze that visitors could normally pass through were not many, dividing the whole maze into several small regions where visitors were not allowed to enter.
And within those restricted areas, there were quite a few wild Spirit Beasts playing around. Feng Yuan gently patted Pomiti, realizing that this was likely intended as a place for the wild Spirit Beasts that stayed in the city.
With time, the number of Spirit Beasts was on the rise. Although stronger ones were still rare, the weaker ones, lacking much ability to fight, were becoming increasingly common.
The normal procedure had been to release them back into the wild, but they couldn’t endure the life there and would return to the city they were familiar with shortly after being sent away. It was like Big Cat, which enjoyed roaming the corners of Maomu City. Agunas looked at the Spirit Beasts scuttling across the grass and nodded; it seemed they liked the place.
"If a lot of wild Spirit Beasts gather, won’t that lead to some undesirable behaviors?"
Veronia asked skeptically. Although the environment was nice and the Spirit Beasts rarely fought to the death, she was very aware that if too many of them gathered here, some lawbreakers might target the place.
"I’m not sure, but they must have considered this kind of thing, otherwise, they wouldn’t have set this up."
Feng Yuan strolled slowly along the wooden suspended bridge, speaking as he walked. It seemed that because it wasn’t the weekend, the bridge wasn’t very crowded. However, there were quite a few parents holding their children, pointing at the Spirit Beasts below and chatting away. It was almost like they were visiting a zoo. Feng Yuan thought to himself, oddly amused.
"You’re here because..."
Yang Hongzhi walked up, eyeing Feng Yuan with suspicion. Seeing this guy here, could it mean another incident had occurred? After all, there wasn’t much interesting in this place, and given that guy’s habits, it was unlikely he’d come during class times. While Yang Hongzhi was guessing, Feng Yuan yawned and said,
"Just walking around. I’ve been training Xiao Ji for several days, so I thought I’d come out today to relax a bit. But what about you? Are you really okay having so much free time?"
Feng Yuan glanced at Yang Hongzhi’s uniform. While it wasn’t strange for him to take part in patrol missions, if he remembered correctly, he had already entered the regional Beast Tamer competition, right? Shouldn’t he be training hard at this time?
"Free time? When do I have free time?"
Yang Hongzhi watched Feng Yuan somewhat speechlessly. He certainly didn’t have as much spare time as that guy did. Najia, who was perched on Yang Hongzhi’s shoulder, smiled and said,
"Xiao Hei and Xiao Hui have hit a bottleneck right now. Relying on training to rapidly increase their strength isn’t realistic."
Hearing what Najia had said, Xiao Hei, who was behind Yang Hongzhi, whined in low tones, seemingly unhappy about having its shortcomings exposed in public. Feng Yuan, surprised by Najia’s explanation, took a look at Xiao Hei and asked,
"Are they about to evolve?"
If Xiao Hei evolved, it would become Elite Level, and Xiao Hui would reach Rare Level strength. That was incredibly fast. Feng Yuan was somewhat skeptical; this growth rate didn’t seem normal.
"No, they’re merely approaching their current potential limit. They are far from evolving."
Najia shook its head as it spoke. Normally, when a Spirit Beast’s potential is almost fully exploited, it’s time for evolution. However, in some special cases, it’s possible that the potential is almost tapped out, but the growth needed to evolve is still a long way off. This was especially true presently, considering Xiao Hei and Xiao Hui were clearly being trained specifically by Najia.
"So, what’s happening now is..."
Feng Yuan looked at Yang Hongzhi, slightly puzzled. If they were at their potential limit, why not use some Potions or the like? Najia looked back at Feng Yuan, somewhat amused, and said,
"I’ve done all I can. Their potential growth is already nearing its limit; continuing to push them won’t make much of a difference."
"I see."
Feng Yuan then realized that ordinary Spirit Beasts, no matter how much their potential limits were boosted, could never be as high as Xiao Ji’s. After all, Xiao Ji was a Divine Beast. Thinking of this, Feng Yuan suddenly reached out to pat Xiao Hei, ruffling the dog’s head and earning an annoyed bark from the beast as it appeared to be quite angry.
"What are you doing..."
Yang Hongzhi watched Feng Yuan, at a loss as to why he was bothering Xiao Hei for no reason. Seeing Xiao Hei barking at Feng Yuan, Xiao Ji responded with a few dissatisfied barks of its own. Watching the two Spirit Beasts confront each other, Agunas said with resignation,
"You really are truly bored."
"The fur isn’t soft enough; it’s a bit dry. You mustn’t be giving it enough nutrition."
Feng Yuan directly said this to Yang Hongzhi, who, after a moment of surprise, looked at Feng Yuan with a skeptical expression and asked,
"Is that what you just checked for?"
"No, I just wanted to tease it a bit. But Najia, haven’t you been replenishing what it consumes? Continuing like this could cause problems."
After a thought, Najia shook its head and replied,
"I always make sure to replenish their consumption. I’m not sure why this issue has arisen."
"Could it be that they’ve been training on their own?"
Agunas scrutinized the Xiao Hei that was arguing with Xiao Ji and suggested. If creatures like Xiao Ji were training covertly, such problems wouldn’t be surprising. Xiao Ji, being a Divine Beast, naturally doesn’t face severe energy depletion. Plus, Feng Yuan occasionally feeds it a pile of high-energy food; the fact that it hasn’t gotten fat is already quite an accomplishment.
Having no alternative—since high-energy food always tastes so good, and that guy raises Xiao Ji like a pet—Xiao Ji has never encountered nutritional deficiencies due to training.
