Chapter 927: Chapter 928: The Leopard in the Sand
"Long time no see~"
Feng Yuan waved his hand with a smile at Captain Yang across from him. The latter, speechless, looked at Feng Yuan and said,
"What are you up to this time?"
"Rebuilding Xinmu City. You help by calling the relevant departments to handle it."
"Rebuilding Xinmu City?"
Captain Yang paused for a moment, and Meng Binglan, looking somewhat puzzled, said,
"With the Ring of the Yellow Sand present, it’s impossible to rebuild, isn’t it? Could it be that you plan to take away the Ring of the Yellow Sand?"
Hearing Meng Binglan’s words, Captain Yang narrowed his eyes and gave Feng Yuan a look that one reserves for a scoundrel. Scratching his head and slightly at a loss for words, Feng Yuan said,
"It’s not that I want to take it away, how should I put it..."
"This actually works out."
Upon seeing Little Leopard with an ancient stone ring in its mouth, running towards him, Feng Yuan said joyfully. Looking at the stone ring full of cracks, Meng Binglan asked with a face full of surprise and doubt,
"Is this the Ring of the Yellow Sand? How did it end up like this?"
"It consumed too much power fighting those enemies before, but this is also a good thing."
"At least we don’t have to worry about this thing anymore, right?"
As he spoke, Feng Yuan gently tapped the Ring of the Yellow Sand. Though it looked like it was made of rock, it emitted a clear, metallic sound. Agunas observed the Ring of the Yellow Sand with a slight frown and said,
"This thing is seriously damaged. Even if we try to stabilize it over time, it might cause problems."
"No worries, it just needs a bit of fixing."
Feng Yuan took out the pitch-black Ancient Book and gently tapped the Ring of the Yellow Sand with it. A swirl of black energy wrapped around the ring, seemingly repairing it. After a while, the black light filled in the missing parts of the Ring of the Yellow Sand, making it appear mysterious and complete, shrouded in an ancient and mystical aura. Little Leopard, beside him, had stars in its eyes and looked excited.
"A memento that has lost its original function, eh..."
Veronia muttered to herself as she looked at the Ring of the Yellow Sand. Little Leopard, brimming with excitement, hopped around, seemingly wanting to embrace the ring in its arms. Big Cat tilted its head and observed the Ring of the Yellow Sand with curiosity. The black light entwined around the ring gradually faded, revealing parts that looked identical to the Ring of the Yellow Sand. Now, from the outside, the ring appeared quite intact.
But whether it was Agunas or Little Leopard, they both knew the ring had lost its original function. For Little Leopard, however, the ring might be even better in its current state.
Picking up the Ring of the Yellow Sand and examining it, Feng Yuan was satisfied and handed it back to Little Leopard, who expressed its gratitude with a cry, seemingly saying thank you. Turning his gaze to Agunas, Feng Yuan revealed a ’wicked’ smile and said,
"Lend me your power for a moment."
"What are you up to?"
Agunas looked at Feng Yuan, puzzled. Without an explanation, Feng Yuan simply smiled mysteriously as Agunas wagged its tail and said,
"Wait a moment."
"What? Don’t you slack off now; I can’t deal with those guys by myself."
As Agunas backed away, Long Boduo called out nervously. At that moment, a column of light blasted through, filled with a dead silence. Neither Long Boduo nor Agunas quite understood where they had acquired such odd weapons.
Even Nierlat would find it difficult to produce weapons and devices related to death and the Ghost Series. After all, one issue was the complete absence of Ghost-type Divine Beasts outside the Mythical Era, making the attributes linked to them rare, and thus, their rules are rarely mastered. The other issue was that those Ghost-type Divine Beasts prefer to shrink back into the Netherworld, rarely appearing in reality, making communication and, consequently, learning how to utilize their attributes exceedingly difficult.
"That guy needs my power for something. You hold the fort for a while."
Agunas took out golden pages and spoke. Runes descended from the sky and landed on the ground, forming a strange Rune circle. Hearing Agunas’s words, Long Boduo said with some bewilderment,
"Didn’t he already finish up over there?"
Feng Yuan had sensed that spreading power as well, and since all the remaining active energy was being dispersed back, naturally, it must have been dealt with already.
"I wonder what he’s planning to do."
As Agunas spoke, he lifted a small paw, and an invisible wall appeared out of nowhere, trapping those enemies within. Seemingly realizing they couldn’t break through the invisible barrier, their attacks became even more dense and aggressive.
Long Boduo shielded Agunas and, with a shrieking cry, stared at those energy attacks, then charged at them. A huge shadow appeared out of thin air, swallowing up the energy attacks in one bite. Moments later, the shadow let out a contented burp, and a black beam of light blasted from its mouth towards the enemy’s location.
"Humph, I do have reflective abilities, you know."
Proud, Long Boduo spoke and glanced at Agunas, urging,
"Hurry up, I can’t hold on much longer!"
Sensing the power transmitted from Agunas, Feng Yuan patted Xiao Ji on the head and smiled,
"Let me show you something interesting."
With a wave of his hand, a huge magic circle covered the sky. On the side, Captain Yang and Meng Binglan, who were on the phone, looked at Feng Yuan with puzzlement, not knowing what he was up to. After a while, the magic circle slowly began to glow, and tiny golden specks of light, like snowflakes, gently fell. Agunas, somewhat astonished, said,
"You actually dare to do this?!"
As the specks of light fell, the buildings of the Ancient City of Yellow Sand started transforming peculiarly. Their weathered facades flaked off like eggshells and revealed brand new structures beneath. As they observed the city, now looking as fresh as Xinmu City once did, the young leopard leaped around excitedly, completely oblivious to the Ring of the Yellow Sand laying nearby.
The present-day Xinmu City looked identical to how it did before turning to yellow sand, except it lacked its familiar residents. Everything seemed to have reverted to the beginning. As the young leopard pranced with joy, Veronia’s expression was indecipherable, and she chose not to speak up. There were some things she did not wish to say just yet. With a sigh, Veronia turned to Feng Yuan and asked,
"Is this really a good idea? Do you realize..."
"Well, if given a choice, what would you choose?"
Instead of giving a direct answer, Feng Yuan simply posed a question in return. Veronia paused, gazed at the renewed Xinmu City, sighed, and said,
"I don’t know..."
"Perhaps, you are right."
"But, is this really... for its own good?"
"If it doesn’t wish for this, they can surely help rebuild it. At the very least, this Xinmu City is more pleasing to the eye now, isn’t it?"
Feng Yuan smiled without offering an explanation. Unlike the sand-covered Ancient City of Yellow Sand, the current Xinmu City stood in between the transformation from Dynasty Era wood structures to modern concrete buildings, though this trend was not too apparent. After all, to most people from that era, the concrete structures were not as aesthetic as those combining stone with wood.
Of course, even now, it was a matter of preference, and Feng Yuan himself was quite fond of this architectural style.
"Hey! Don’t forget that."
Seeing the young leopard dash towards the city center, Feng Yuan hurriedly called out a reminder. However, gazing in the direction of the city center, Feng Yuan sighed; the more excited the other was now, the more likely it was...
The young leopard, with the Ring of the Yellow Sand in its mouth, bolted towards the City Lord Mansion at the heart of the city. It encountered scattered debris along the way, which posed no hindrance at all, rapidly reaching the mansion. Confronted with the silent City Lord Mansion, the young leopard paused, realizing something—or perhaps, that was just what it wished for.
Clutching the Ring of the Yellow Sand, the young leopard moved slowly into the mansion. Surrounded by everything so familiar, the young leopard no longer exhibited previous excitement, its tail drooping as it glanced around with its head lowered.
"See..."
Veronia looked helplessly toward Feng Yuan, while the young leopard sat in the hall quietly crying, the Ring of the Yellow Sand carelessly dropped beside it. Agunas remained silent, simply watching quietly. Scratching his head with a radiant smile, Feng Yuan knew this was not the time for Veronia to step in and console; letting the young leopard vent was the best remedy.
After some time, the young leopard slowly stopped crying and looked up at Feng Yuan, its fur damp with tears, so conspicuously visible.
"That..."
Feng Yuan, feeling a bit guilty, approached and gently caressed the young leopard, which whimpered as if heartbroken. Agunas flicked its tail and looked towards Feng Yuan,
"It seems it hasn’t assumed the role of the Guardian Divine Beast for long."
Feng Yuan held the young leopard in his arms as it continued to whimper and cry, its tail restlessly swaying back and forth.
