Chapter 848: Chapter 849: Snowy Night

"If you’re tired, just get some sleep first," Feng Yuan said to Chen Xin. At that moment, Feng Yuan had conjured a giant tortoise magic construct, carrying both of them forward. In the center of the tortoise’s back, he had Agunas create a bonfire to ensure they wouldn’t freeze while sleeping at night.

Chen Xin shook her head and leaned forward, seemingly trying to pierce through the boundless night, searching for so long, yet they still hadn’t found Teacher Yan and that little girl. By now, Feng Yuan was losing hope about the lost girl’s chances of survival.

"You can’t see anything anyway, so why push yourself?"

Sitting on the back of the tortoise, propping his head with a hand, Feng Yuan gazed into the endless darkness ahead and spoke. If it weren’t for his ability to extend his Divine Sense to survey the surroundings, he would have already gone to rest. Chen Xin kept observing the snowy darkness and said,

"An extra person means extra possibilities, right? Maybe you missed something?"

"I think you’re overthinking it. Could there be any oversights in the places swept by spiritual power?"

Chen Xin turned to glance at Feng Yuan. Since he was sitting with his back to the fire, his expression was unclear, but by the way he continually stroked Xiao Ji, who was lying before him, he probably had a look of boredom—Feng Yuan never seemed too interested in such repetitive work. That’s what Chen Xin thought to herself before speaking,

"Not necessarily. Aren’t there many devices that can shield against the detection of spiritual power?"

Feng Yuan glanced at Chen Xin but did not bother explaining the differences between his Divine Sense and ordinary people’s spiritual power. Even with restrictions, hiding from his Divine Sense would be quite difficult.

Yawning, Feng Yuan looked back at Agunas and asked,

"Have you discovered anything?"

Shaking his head with eyes closed, Agunas replied,

"Nothing. Although I’ve tried to expand my range, I still haven’t found anything. The blizzard in Veludante seems to have intensified. I really don’t understand what it’s trying to do."

Agunas spoke reluctantly. If it had been his true form, perhaps the sensing range could have been expanded across much of the Mordic Prairie. But now, it was just an avatar here, and in many aspects, it was not as formidable as the original.

While petting Xiao Ji’s feathers, Feng Yuan yawned and looked out into the dark snowy night with some helplessness. Xiao Ji, in front of him, seemed to thoroughly enjoy this moment monopolizing Feng Yuan’s attention and happily dozed off.

Although Chen Xin was trying to persist, the unchanging darkness made her restless. The bonfire that Agunas had created lacked the soft, crackling sound of burning wood, but even if it did, the whistling wind would likely drown it out, right?

After a long silence, Feng Yuan glanced at the somewhat groggy Chen Xin and said,

"You should go to sleep. In your state, what more could you possibly find?"

"I..."

"Although I’m not very keen on physical action, I do know how to knock someone out directly. Want to give it a try?"

Chen Xin looked at Feng Yuan silently and after a moment of hesitation whispered,

"Am I very useless?"

"Huh?"

Feng Yuan was startled and didn’t quite understand where this was coming from. Chen Xin, staring into the dark snowy night, said,

"That wager at the beginning... the issue with Yue Bai... and now... I seem to be unable to do anything right..."

Yue Bai whined and moved into Chen Xin’s embrace, looking at her. Scratching his head, Feng Yuan didn’t know what to say for a while and then spoke up,

"I think everyone doesn’t see it that way. Look, you do a good job as class president, right? Organizing activities and such, you’re not bad. At least nobody else says you’re not, right?"

Glancing at Feng Yuan, Chen Xin said in a low voice,

"But those are small matters, I..."

"Sometimes I really envy you. You’re free to do whatever you wish..."

Hearing Chen Xin’s words, Feng Yuan was taken aback for a moment, then sighed while gazing into the dark snowy night,

"That’s just because you haven’t seen it all. There are many things that aren’t so straightforward to do... There’s one thing, I could have done from the beginning, but..."

Looking at the sky and closing his eyes, Feng Yuan took a deep breath and continued,

"I can’t bring myself to do it... it wouldn’t make them happy... and..."

"You’ve been trying to break free from your family’s legacy, haven’t you?"

Feng Yuan suddenly changed the subject, to which Chen Xin stiffened and said, dumbfounded,

"You know? I didn’t expect it to be so obvious..."

Agunas glanced at Feng Yuan with a speechless expression; that guy definitely didn’t guess it. He knew, given the lack of contact between him and Chen Xin, it was impossible for him to have guessed Chen Xin’s situation.

"That... actually, I didn’t guess it, it’s just..."

Feng Yuan said with a guilty conscience. He had accidentally seen his classmate’s family situation while flipping through some records before, and he had deduced it from Chen Xin’s behavior, but...

Chen Xin looked at Feng Yuan with a bit of helplessness and said,

"You really are... If you had said you guessed it, it would have been better. Being so honest, people who don’t know you might think you’re a pervert."

"Heh heh..."

Feng Yuan scratched his head and didn’t object. Chen Xin, although not having had much contact with Feng Yuan, still had figured out his temper. He wasn’t the kind of person who liked to pry into things; as long as you didn’t pique his curiosity too much, he wouldn’t delve too deeply.

"Since that’s the case, as an exchange, tell me, what is that thing you want to do but can’t?"

Chen Xin asked curiously, staring at Feng Yuan. She hadn’t expected Feng Yuan to have something he couldn’t do. Although Agunas pretended to be uninterested, its constantly wagging tail had already betrayed it. After a while, Chen Xin cautiously said,

"If you can’t talk about it, it’s okay."

Feng Yuan smiled and looked at the pitch-black snowy night, saying,

"There’s nothing I can’t talk about. It’s just a multiple-choice question that seemingly offers a choice."

With his hands propping behind him, Feng Yuan, sitting on the turtle’s back, looked up at the snowflakes falling from the sky and said in a low voice,

"If resurrecting a deceased relative meant the world you’re in now would be destroyed, how would you choose?"

"This..."

Chen Xin didn’t know how to choose. It seemed neither giving up nor persisting was a good option. Agunas looked at Feng Yuan and said,

"Do you find this difficult?"

With Feng Yuan’s abilities, he could easily take his relatives to another world; there wouldn’t really be anything difficult to choose, but... Feng Yuan’s situation seemed to have led him to choose the other option. Why? Agunas was very puzzled.

Glancing at Agunas, Feng Yuan said with a bitter smile,

"Do you think it’s funny to destroy a world with your own hands? Besides... even if I could take them away, what then? Relatives, friends, and all those familiar things would be gone."

"Rather than that, it’s better to just continue living like this..."

Agunas looked at Feng Yuan in silence. It felt that, if it were in his place, it might choose the other option without hesitation. Although it was a Divine Beast sworn to protect the world, that duty was only a part of it. Without the identity of a Divine Beast, perhaps it could be freer?

Chen Xin stared at Feng Yuan for a long time before slowly speaking,

"So, you’re actually not from our world, are you?"

"No wonder you’ve always struck me as odd, as if you really care and enjoy your time at school, yet you don’t care about studying, and there’s your enigmatic strength..."

"Although I’d like to say, once you choose, you shouldn’t have regrets, I can’t even do that myself..."

Chen Xin said with self-derision, then looking at Feng Yuan she added,

"Actually, you have friends now, right? Qi Chen and the others, and me. An eaglet has to soar in the blue sky on its own eventually."

Feng Yuan looked at Chen Xin for a while and said with a bit of amusement,

"Your level of consolation isn’t great, not as good as hers."

Seeing Chen Xin looking at him with a gossip-hungry expression, Feng Yuan shook his head, not bothering to explain but instead gently stroked Xiao Ji’s feathers. The blizzard was being held back by Agunas’s Barrier, only lightly blowing on their clothes.

"To actually get lost..."

Teacher Yan said with a bitter smile, looking at the little girl in his arms. Although he had Xiao Tong help her change into her clothes and wrapped her in an outer robe, the girl’s condition didn’t seem to have improved. Leaning on Big Black’s back, Teacher Yan sighed as he looked at the snowy night in the darkness, saying,

"I wonder if Xiao Tong can find the way back..."

"I never thought I, as a teacher, would end up needing my own student to save me..."

Teacher Yan said with self-mockery as he gazed oddly at the little girl in his arms. She was still fast asleep, although she had briefly woken up a few times, only to struggle and then fall asleep again. Just as Teacher Yan closed his eyes to rest for a while, the roar of the Ice Snow Giants echoed from afar.
