Chapter 804: Chapter 805 Searching
Xiao Ji could hardly revel in his satisfaction for long. As the Wind of Death dissipated, the shadows once again enveloped the area. If not for Gitalien’s power shrouding the barrier, perhaps those shadows would have already climbed onto the spherical Barrier.
The grating noise of fingernails scraping a blackboard sounded, and Feng Yuan shouted with some dissatisfaction,
"Xiao Ji! Chain cast the Wind of Death!"
The Wind of Death blew in all directions, and instantly the grassland, hidden by the shadows, was exposed. Amidst the starlight, it seemed as if only the area near where Feng Yuan and the others stood was illuminated, the rest engulfed in pitch darkness.
But as the wind gradually subsided, the shadows once again closed in. Xiao Ji, somewhat angered, chirped and flapped its wings, hurling streaks of pale blue fireballs into the shadows. Sparks and broken grass leaves flew about, but unlike the Wind of Death, the shadows seemed as if they weren’t in the same space as the fireballs; no matter how fiercely the dirt was scattered, the shadows showed no change.
"There’s no use trying. They’re immortal."
Pressing down on Xiao Ji’s head, Feng Yuan stopped him from wanting to continue attacking and said. Gitalien, looking on in puzzlement, asked,
"The powers of the Death Series can’t restrain them?"
"How can death restrain death itself?"
Feng Yuan lifted Pomiti onto his head, embraced Xiao Ji and said while Agunas flicked his tail,
"Death itself, huh..."
"Forget about them, let’s continue searching for that guy. These things can’t stop us, can they?"
Feng Yuan casually glanced at the shadows and said. Gladys was silent for a moment, then the card in her hand ignited with silvery-white flames. With a casual toss, the card burning with silvery-white flames flew into the shadows, and a ring of silvery-white flame wrestled a patch of open space from within the shadows.
"Can the Power of Time drive them away?"
Agunas mused, then, shaking her head, Gladys said,
"Not exactly. It’s just forming something similar to a Barrier, that’s all. They don’t seem to have any reaction to the flames of time."
"Thank you for the trouble."
Seeing Agunas looking at her, Gitalien replied irritably,
"Why bother with them? It’s not like they make much difference."
Gitalien opened a Space Gate outside the Barrier. Through the Space Gate, they could see an enormous spherical Barrier that was almost completely devoured by darkness. There was no need to ask; everyone could guess what that was. Dou Yanlan glanced at Feng Yuan and said in a low voice,
"Is that Yongzhen Island? To think it has already become like this..."
"Ordinary Barriers can only block—luckily, they don’t seem to have any attacking power, right?"
Gladys held another card and thoughtfully said with Li Xiaowei then considering,
"It’s not quite like that. Perhaps they’re just not adept at direct killing, but when it comes to attacks on the spirit..."
Agunas, without saying much more, opened the book in his hands and with a flick of his paw, a silvery-white flame flew out from the book, passed through the Space Gate, and entered the other side, sinking into the colossal spherical Barrier.
The silvery-white flames slowly ignited atop that giant Barrier, and the shadows that were about to engulf the Barrier gradually receded under the repulsion of the silvery-white flames. Despite the distance, Feng Yuan felt he could almost hear the cheers emanating from Yongzhen Island.
"No, it’s not here."
Feng Yuan said somewhat helplessly. The area was simply too vast, and they had already searched several islands without finding anything special.
"Something seems off. I always feel like we’ve overlooked something important."
Dou Yanlan said, stroking her chin with a thoughtful expression. Though she didn’t perceive exactly what the issue was, her subconscious told her they’d missed something important.
"I feel the same way, but what could it be..."
Li Xiaowei, who found herself getting a headache from thinking, said slightly frantically, while Gladys looked around and smilingly said,
"Why haven’t we discovered a single structure that belongs to the Ancient Ruins? Could we have taken a wrong turn? Or could there be another possibility?"
"Yes! That’s it!"
Li Xiaowei said, jolted awake by the realization. That feeling of something being amiss related to this; no matter how they changed the internal space, they had visited so many islands and had yet to see anything related to Ancient Ruins. This was quite abnormal. Dou Yanlan, puzzled, looked around at the valleys and said,
"Could it be hidden underground?"
"It shouldn’t be. Along the way, we’ve been very careful to note whether there are any underground passages. It makes no sense for an Ancient Ruin to lack a passage to the interior."
Li Xiaowei, rubbing her chin, assessed her surroundings and said. Gladys, feeding something to the Prophecy Doll on her shoulder, laughed and said,
"So we took a wrong turn?"
"I don’t know."
Seeing everyone looking at him, Feng Yuan thought for a moment and said,
"It shouldn’t be, the only area connected to Lake Bai Dao is here. It really shouldn’t be..."
"Actually, there’s a very simple way to find out if this really is the inside of the ancient ruins, isn’t there?"
Gladys, with a mysterious smile on her face, said something that confused the others, but Feng Yuan quickly realized what Gladys meant and scratched his head saying,
"Are you talking about those who triggered the ruins?"
"Exactly. These ancient ruins shouldn’t be so easily activated. After all, Lorraine Tower had also used the power of this ruin in the past, and there has been no similar incident recorded in Dao Lake City, which proves this activation is unprecedented."
"So, those people could have likely triggered the activation by intruding into the inner parts of the ruins, right?"
Seeing Gladys look towards him, Feng Yuan nodded and said,
"Indeed, that’s not a small possibility, but they were actually in this area."
"Eh?"
Gladys, startled for a moment, pointed at a distant spot where Feng Yuan was and said,
"If I’m not sensing this wrong, they should be right there."
"No way?"
Gladys did not expect it to be such a coincidence; the intruders of the ancient ruins were actually right ahead. Hearing this news, Li Xiaowei spoke with some urgency,
"Then let’s hurry over! I want to ask them myself what exactly they want to do!"
"What’s happening?!"
Seeing those people fighting with the shadows, everyone was stunned for a moment, and Feng Yuan said with some surprise,
"What did they do for those things to have a physical form?"
"So annoying!"
Gitalien, dissatisfied with the shadows with physical forms coming towards them, blurted out. The moving shadows were immediately shattered like falling puzzle pieces. Moments later, sparkling beads fell down, and those shattered shadows tumbled and merged back into the shadows on the ground.
"I see, so when an ultimate move is used, those shadows can absorb its energy and transform it into a physical form."
Feng Yuan had an epiphany upon seeing the slowly fading beads. As for why they hadn’t encountered such a situation? It was because they all knew these shadows were undying and didn’t bother to make a move, not to mention the barrier wasn’t within their hunting range. What about Xiao Ji’s initial attack?
Clearly, they did not have the capability to convert the Energy of the Death Series, so the group had been unaware of this characteristic of the shadows.
"Who is it?!"
Upon hearing Meng Binglan’s voice, Feng Yuan said with a complex expression,
"You really don’t... learn from your experiences, do you?"
Agunas, knowing the inside story, waved its claws, and streaks of silver-white flames parted the shadows to reveal the overwhelmed barrier, which at that moment was flickering and looked as if it was on the verge of collapse.
Feng Yuan didn’t need to ask to guess that the shadows with physical forms were to blame. The non-physical shadows couldn’t do anything to the barrier, but once they had a physical form, they naturally could attack the barrier itself.
"It’s you? Sorry, it looks like you have to wrap this up again..."
Meng Binglan looked at Feng Yuan with a helpless expression and angrily turned towards a woman nearby saying,
"Cheng Yuye! Look at the mess you’ve made."
An aggrieved researcher-like man yelled back at Meng Binglan,
"Why are you blaming her! She didn’t want this either!"
"Xu Sheng! You can’t get out of this either! After such a big blunder, do you think the institute will let you off easily?!"
Meng Binglan shouted back, and the woman called Cheng Yuye scoffed and said,
"It’s just an accidental activation of ancient ruins. As long as we can research this incredible spatial restriction, they won’t do anything to us. It’s just a minor anomaly, a necessary sacrifice."
"A minor anomaly? To you researchers, the entire Lake Bai Dao being dragged into this strange space is just a trivial matter!"
Li Xiaowei roared in anger. Upon hearing her words, the researchers were taken aback, and Xu Sheng, lacking confidence, asked,
"Certainly not..."
