Chapter 528: Chapter 529 Research and Accident_1

Guo Huai asked while explaining to Mo Li and the others what percentages were, his voice tinged with confusion,

"Isn’t it all the same?"

Feng Yuan glanced at Guo Huai and said irritably,

"At first, everyone thought they were the same, until moves that specifically target Spirit Beast traits appeared, and then everyone realized the difference."

"Traits can be targeted by these moves, though not many. Still, quite a few Spirit Beasts possess moves that can temporarily neutralize their traits. Special abilities, however, are different; as of now, there are no moves that can directly target special abilities."

"Though the calamities of Yognot and others can also be considered traits and theoretically, there should be a way to neutralize those traits, not a single Divine Beast currently has a move capable of neutralizing traits."

Feng Yuan spread his hands helplessly as he spoke, naturally thinking of Yognot and their kin when it came to traits. Their traits were a torment to them, and if possible, he naturally wanted to help. But targeting traits at the Rule Level wasn’t so straightforward; Feng Yuan even doubted that Divine Beasts could neutralize those traits.

Hua Yiyou hastily recorded the information he had just heard from Feng Yuan. Seeing Hua Yiyou’s eager manner, Guo Huai asked with some puzzlement,

"Is it really that important?"

Hua Yiyou replied with a faint smile,

"Although the authenticity is uncertain, it can serve as a research direction. This information has significant research value."

"But can you really finish researching everything?"

Although Feng Yuan and the system had warned Guo Huai not to provide too much specific information about individual Spirit Beasts, Guo Huai still very much wanted to share all he knew. After all, there was so much information on Spirit Beasts, and that was just the data from the Spirit Beast Manual, not even including various research materials. Including all those, Guo Huai didn’t believe Hua Yiyou could research everything.

Hua Yiyou chuckled and said,

"At least I’ve set out on the path. I really like a phrase he once said to me."

"Research has no end. Although we can’t see the end of our research, just the thought of having led a phase of the Spirit Beast studies makes it feel worthwhile. Regardless of right or wrong, as long as it can inspire and help future generations, it’s valuable."

Guo Huai remained silent. He didn’t know how to refute or rather, didn’t wish to. After all, he was about to embark on this path himself, and while Spirit Beast research might not be his main occupation, with the system’s help, he believed he would leave his mark in the history of Spirit Beast studies.

"Really, why won’t he let me talk openly about it..."

Thinking this, Guo Huai cast a resentful glance at Feng Yuan. After all, if Feng Yuan and the system hadn’t stopped him, he could have become famous just using the knowledge from the future. Feng Yuan glanced at Guo Huai and said irritably,

"First, with your current identity, would you be satisfied publishing research findings? Also, don’t think I don’t know what you’re up to. Do you have detailed data? Without the process and thoughts that led to the results, you think you can just wing it?"

"Forcing growth is not the way to go."

"Who says so! At least it would help avoid wrong directions, wouldn’t it?!" Guo Huai retorted dissatisfiedly, to which Feng Yuan helplessly continued,

"I really don’t know what you’ve learned so far. Mistakes are not necessarily to be avoided; many errors have their merits, and right and wrong are never absolutes."

"This..."

Reminded by Feng Yuan, Guo Huai immediately remembered this matter. Although this was a saying from his past life, it was true, as Feng Yuan said. In research, low-level mistakes can be avoided, but deliberately avoiding errors is often unnecessary.

"Sorry, I thought wrong."

Guo Huai sincerely apologized, and Feng Yuan waved his hand and said,

"It doesn’t matter, just keep it in mind."

After a while, Hua Yiyou finished recording the information, and the group set off on their journey again.

"No way..."

That night, while setting up camp and preparing for dinner, Feng Yuan saw the little kitten at the door and felt a headache coming on. The phantom of Agunas glanced at Feng Yuan and said,

"This is the mess you created."

"How was I supposed to know it would get so attached to me..."

At this moment, several smaller Da Yuan Cats popped their heads out from behind the large one, curiously sizing up Feng Yuan. They seemed a bit scared to see so many people all at once, all of them huddling behind the big Da Yuan Cat, with one even climbing onto its back and covering its eyes with its front paws, stealing glances at the crowd.

Feng Yuan walked over by himself and gently stroked the head of the big Da Yuan Cat, saying

"Are you here to cadge food again? Are these... your kin?"

The big Da Yuan Cat seemed to enjoy Feng Yuan’s petting, while the small Da Yuan Cats, appearing frightened, quickly scurried towards the door and huddled not far away, nervously watching Feng Yuan. After a while, enticed by the appetizing smell of cat treats, the small Da Yuan Cats cautiously approached the basin of Thunder Milk that Feng Yuan had placed at the doorway under the big Da Yuan Cat’s urging.

Seeing Little Green Snake getting ready to leave the dining table, Feng Yuan smiled and said

"No need, I’ll just catch some fish myself. Xiao Ji, come here. I’ll need your help to take me there later."

Little Green Snake looked puzzledly at Feng Yuan, hugging the preppy Xiao Ji. Feng Yuan explained

"There’re no rivers around here. Even if you wanted to catch fish, there would be nowhere to do it. Xiao Ji can fly me back to the river we passed yesterday to catch fish. It would be too much trouble if you walked there."

Seeing Feng Yuan didn’t seem to be joking, Little Green Snake hesitated for a moment, hissed something at Xiao Ji, and then turned around to continue eating.

"It just told Xiao Ji where there are more fish, that’s all."

Agunas’s phantom didn’t wait for Feng Yuan to ask and took the initiative to translate, knowing that Feng Yuan would certainly be curious to ask. Patting Xiao Ji’s head, Feng Yuan said with a smile,

"Did you get that? Then later, you’ll take me to where there are plenty of fish, okay?"

"You guys wait here, I’ll be right back."

After telling the group of Da Yuan Cats, Feng Yuan left the camp with Xiao Ji in his arms. Agunas’s phantom shook its tail and followed, while the White Wolf Deity lay on one side with eyes closed, appearing to be resting and showing no interest in the happenings around it.

Aside from the bubbling sound of running water, there were no other sounds by the stream at night. Xiao Ji, carrying Feng Yuan, landed at the edge of the creek but then refused to go any closer, adamant about staying away. It was nighttime, and Xiao Ji was suspicious that Feng Yuan would seize the opportunity to get it wet, necessitating a bath. Feng Yuan just glanced at Xiao Ji and figured out what was on its mind, saying exasperatedly,

"What are you thinking? Didn’t I just help you with that yesterday?"

Xiao Ji stepped back a few paces, watching Feng Yuan warily, ready to take flight at the first sign of trouble. Seeing Xiao Ji’s nervous demeanor, Feng Yuan spread his hands helplessly and said,

"Honestly, you don’t believe a word I say."

"Well, it’s because you always deceive it."

Agunas’s phantom said dryly to Feng Yuan, implying that Xiao Ji would not have reacted like this if he hadn’t so often resorted to tricks to bathe it.

Feng Yuan glanced at Agunas’s phantom and retorted,

"You’re spreading rumors. When have I ever deceived it? At most, I accidentally splashed water on it, that’s all."

"Once it evolves, you’ll have no means left. After evolving, it will definitely have the ability to repel water,"

Agunas’s phantom said with a sinister shake of its tail. Xiao Ji poked its head out curiously, eavesdropping on the conversation. Feng Yuan, while pulling out his long staff, said,

"Water-repelling isn’t omnipotent. It only allows for the rapid drying of feathers and protects them from getting wet for a short duration. If I really want to, can’t I just use a powerful water spell?"

Hearing Feng Yuan’s words, Xiao Ji protested loudly, apparently convinced that Feng Yuan had long been planning such a thing. Feng Yuan looked at Xiao Ji and stated flatly,

"I’m not going to use any powerful water spells on you. Besides, after you evolve, I probably won’t bother giving you baths at all. One reason being that you’ll be too big, and it’ll be troublesome; the other reason, it’s unnecessary."

"Self-cleaning?"

"What else?"

"Well, that’s true..."

Agunas’s phantom nodded in understanding, realizing that only Native Level Spirit Beasts lacked the ability to clean themselves. Even though Xiao Ji now held the potential of a Divine Beast, in essence, it was still at the Native Level. It would only acquire the self-cleaning ability, which is basic for Spirit Beasts to maintain their cleanliness, once it evolved and surpassed the Native Level.
