Chapter 504: Chapter 505: Testing_1

"Of course, we need to bring back a whole nest of Messenger Birds—what good is just one?"

As he spoke, Feng Yuan fed another string of berries to the Messenger Bird in his palm and whispered softly,

"Do you like it?"

The Messenger Bird hopped joyfully in Feng Yuan’s palm, chirping cheerfully, while Feng Yuan’s finger gently pressed down on the tuft of yellow fluff on the bird’s head and then continued,

"So, would you like to bring your group over as well?"

The Messenger Bird, appearing not to understand, continued to hop around in Feng Yuan’s palm. Seeing Feng Yuan’s patient demeanor, Yao Yin said with irritation,

"How unscrupulous."

"How can you call it unscrupulous? We’re just giving them an opportunity to work."

"Tsk, it’s living just fine in the wild, and you want to trick it into working for you, tsk tsk tsk."

The Agunas’s shadow flicked its tail and said,

"That’s not true; Messenger Birds are quite weak, barely stronger than those at Native Level. If not for their exceptional speed, Messenger Birds might have gone extinct long ago."

"It seems that the Yongning Army already has Messenger Birds."

Knowing Feng Yuan’s purpose, Mo Li spoke up, and with a sigh, Feng Yuan said,

"Your Messenger Birds are already barely maintaining the current information system, right?"

"That is true."

No matter the Spirit Beast, their reproductive capabilities are not particularly strong. Even the weak Little Green Snakes that are commonly seen reproduce only about once a year, and during reproduction, a Spirit Beast’s strength significantly decreases. As a result, many Spirit Beast groups, unless protected by a powerful advanced form, typically control their size to avoid unnecessary troubles from not being able to acquire enough survival resources.

Guo Huai looked at Feng Yuan with disdain and said,

"Is that your excuse for abducting them?"

Offering another string of berries to the Messenger Bird, Feng Yuan replied irritably,

"What abduction? Have you forgotten about the common evolutionary path of Messenger Birds?"

"How could I forget; it goes from Messenger Bird to Courier Bird, then to War..."

"Why did you stop?"

Guo Huai’s eyebrows knitted tightly, sensing something amiss. He glanced at the Messenger Bird in his palm, and Feng Yuan said calmly,

"A Messenger Bird’s evolution is closely connected to humans. Although not as closely tied as the Explosive Nightingale’s war-evolved form, it’s quite similar."

"Originally, Messenger Birds had no evolved form until humans continuously trained them, pushing them past their speed limits and leading to their later evolved forms."

"In other words, in the natural environment, Messenger Birds cannot evolve."

Feng Yuan said this and turned to look at Mo Li,

"Because they are too weak, even you wouldn’t be able to consider them equivalent to a Divine Lord, right?"

After a moment of silence, Mo Li nodded and said,

"If you hadn’t pointed it out, I might have thought they were just some peculiar wild beasts."

"So there’s no problem at all with me taking them away~"

As he spoke, Feng Yuan tried again to convince the Messenger Bird to bring its group to follow him. The Agunas’s shadow glanced at Feng Yuan and flicked its tail, but didn’t say much more.

After a while, the Agunas’s shadow approached and communicated with the Messenger Bird. After a long time, even the normally patient Agunas became impatient. Just as Agunas was considering whether to tell Feng Yuan to give up, the Messenger Bird suddenly let out a crisp chirp and disappeared into the forest that was growing darker.

"Did it... run away?"

Glancing at Hua Yiyou, Feng Yuan said with a slight smile,

"No, it’s probably gone to bring its companions here."

"You succeeded?"

Turning to Mo Li who stood beside him, Feng Yuan said earnestly,

"Messenger Birds are also Spirit Beasts, and although their evolution is closely linked to humans, but..."

Mo Li paused, not quite understanding why Feng Yuan said this, but after thinking briefly, he understood Feng Yuan’s concern and showed a friendly smile, saying,

"I understand, I’ll treat them well."

"It’s good that you understand, and if you didn’t... there wouldn’t actually be anything I’d need to do."

Feng Yuan’s gaze drifted toward Zi Mo, who was standing aside. As the sky darkened, a faint purple glow emanated from Zi Mo, and Feng Yuan looked on enviously for a while before glancing down at Xiao Ji at his feet. He bent down and scooped up the still-grumpy Xiao Ji, patting its head while comforting it.

"Let’s go; we can still travel a bit further before it gets completely dark."

Seeing that no one else moved, Feng Yuan couldn’t help but speak up. Hua Yiyou looked at Feng Yuan curiously and asked,

"Shouldn’t we wait for them?"

"No need, Messenger Birds have never sought people based on their location; that’s their gift. After all, with such deficits in martial strength, there must be compensation elsewhere."

As they spoke, Feng Yuan motioned for the guards to clear the way. He couldn’t be bothered to care about where exactly Mo Li and the others were headed, or through which areas they would pass—he was content to simply follow behind them.

Suddenly, a sly smile crept across Feng Yuan’s face as he whispered,

"Is this a test?"

As the sun set in the west, Great Li City was enveloped in the dim afterglow of the sunset. Standing at the entrance of Wolf Mountain Hall, Feng Yuan gazed out over the city and said,

"I’m curious why you have come to find me."

"The rebellion in the Bei Ding Domain."

Feng Yuan looked the elegant young man before him up and down with interest and asked,

"And what does that have to do with me?"

With a wave of his hand, he stopped the servants behind him from speaking out. The young man toyed with a jade token in his hand and said,

"Might it be that you Wolf Mountain Hall has other plans afoot?"

"Whether or not we have other plans, I believe you must be aware of them. Or are you suggesting that you intend to make a move against Wolf Mountain Hall?"

Glancing warily at the back courtyard of Wolf Mountain Hall, the young man suddenly clutched the jade token and said with a faint smile,

"Why would we do that? If you haven’t wronged Great Li, why would we act against you?"

"Aren’t you afraid that, once there, I might instead help the Fifth Prince?"

Feng Yuan spoke, his gaze intently fixed on the young man in luxurious brocade clothes,

"Eldest Prince, do you really think I am unaware of the true nature of your machinations?"

"Should the news leak out, I’m afraid..."

Meeting Feng Yuan’s threatening gaze, the Eldest Prince only held the stare for a moment before turning away and saying,

"You must have been deceived by rumors."

With a faint smile, Feng Yuan did not retort. He took the bright yellow Imperial Decree from the hands of a servant and walked into Wolf Mountain Hall without looking back, saying,

"I shall depart in three days."

Hearing Feng Yuan’s words, the Eldest Prince darkened his face and through gritted teeth, said in a low voice,

"Let’s go!"

"Your Highness, should we..."

Observing the motioning of his own guard, the Eldest Prince laughed coldly and said,

"Impossible. That fellow is too powerful, otherwise why would I personally come to visit?"

"But... what he mentioned..."

The Eldest Prince fixed a cold glare at that guard and warned,

"An excess of curiosity can be fatal!"

"As for whether or not he will go around talking carelessly? Even if he doesn’t, do you really think others haven’t noticed..."

"Three days... I wonder if that’s enough time to persuade Father to revoke this Imperial Decree..."

Gazing at the darkening sky, the Eldest Prince lamented.

Returning inside Wolf Mountain Hall, Feng Yuan carelessly threw the Imperial Decree onto an altar and said softly,

"I wonder if you understand what I mean~"

"It seems today no greedy little cat has appeared. What a pity."

After putting away the tableware, Feng Yuan looked around with a tinge of disappointment and muttered to himself, while the spirit figure of Agunas swung its tail and glanced at the Vine Turtle, saying,

"How many of the spirit beasts living in the wild are greedy? That one is just an anomaly."

The Vine Turtle seemed to understand that Agunas’s spirit figure was talking about itself, turned away, yawned, and retreated into its shell in a way that said, ’go ahead and talk as you please.’

Hua Yiyou smiled wryly, walked forward, and gently tapped on the turtle shell, saying,

"If you want to sleep, go to your room. Don’t sleep here."

Realizing the Vine Turtle was ignoring him, Hua Yiyou knocked on its shell while leaning over in front of it. Seeing the turtle cautiously sticking out its head with bright eyes fixed on him, Hua Yiyou said somewhat helplessly,

"Quit it, I can’t carry you..."

"Here."

"What’s this?"

Taking the fruit Feng Yuan handed over, Hua Yiyou looked puzzled. The Vine Turtle in the shell seemed to smell something, carefully extended its head to steal the fruit while Hua Yiyou wasn’t paying attention, and gulp it down in one bite. Feng Yuan glanced at the Vine Turtle and said,

"If it doesn’t want to move, why don’t you use that to lure it into motion?"
